Pacers-Kings Preview

The Sacramento Kings felt they had two talented options at point guard in rookie Tyreke Evans and Beno Udrih, but the emergence of Sergio Rodriguez has provided additional depth.

The Kings look to complete a perfect four-game homestand Wednesday when they face the Indiana Pacers, who may switch up their lineup in hopes of avoiding a third straight loss.

Sacramento (8-8) has bounced back from a four-game losing streak Nov. 17-23 during which it gave up 108.5 points per game. The Kings have followed an 0-3 road trip by winning three in a row at home while holding each opponent under 100 points. They are coming off a 112-96 victory over New Orleans on Sunday.

While defense may be the biggest reason for Sacramento's turnaround, a balanced offense has certainly played a part. On Sunday, Rodriguez led six Kings in double figures with a career-high 24 points off the bench.

Rodriguez, averaging 3.8 points over 231 career games, has averaged 15.3 in the last four contests.

"There are only so many point guard minutes we have, but the way Sergio has played lately he's kicked the door down," coach Paul Westphal said. "It's going to be harder and harder not to play him."

Westphal has received a lot of contributions from his first two options at point guard. Evans continues to impress, ranking second among rookies with 18.8 points per game and third in assists (4.7), while Udrih is averaging 14.2 points and 3.9 assists.

Jason Thompson also stepped up Sunday, scoring 22 points to go along with 14 rebounds for the Kings, who are without 2008-09 leading scorer Kevin Martin (fractured wrist).

"We've been finding different ways pretty much every game," Westphal said. "Our team is getting to know each other and I think they have confidence in each other. Some nights it's one guy; another night it's someone else. It's really something good happening."

Westphal also has to be pleased with the effort on the other end of the court. The Kings, giving up 104.3 points per game this season, are looking to hold a fourth consecutive opponent below 100 points for the first time since Dec. 10-15, 2007.

The Pacers (6-9), meanwhile, can't be happy with their defensive play. They lost for the sixth time in seven games Monday, setting a season high in points allowed in a 126-107 defeat at Golden State.

Danny Granger and Mike Dunleavy each scored 22 points to lead Indiana, which is giving up an average of 107.7 points in the last seven games after holding opponents to 97.9 in the first eight.

"We just didn't get the job done defensively and defend at a very high level," coach Jim O'Brien said. "It's practice and video, and a lot of time it's up to the team to sometimes bring it to another level. We haven't been able to do that on a consistent enough basis."

Jeff Foster made his second start of the season while the slumping Roy Hibbert came off the bench. O'Brien said he is considering other lineup changes with Brandon Rush being the player most likely to see a change in his status. Rush, who has started all 15 games, has scored four points in the last two games.

The Pacers won both games against the Kings last season and have won their last two in Sacramento.

Evans, Kings extend win streak to four, sink slumping Pacers

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (NBA.com exclusive) -- Tyreke Evans is making his case as the league's top rookie.

The Kings' No. 4 pick continued to victimize smaller guards, scoring 26 points to lead the Kings to a 110-105 victory over the Pacers on Wednesday night.

"I wouldn't say I'm the best, but I'm one of the best rookies in the league," Evans said. "There are a lot of guys going good, Brandon [Jennings] is doing great."

But it was Evans who was named Rookie of the Month for games played through November.

The 6-foot-6 Memphis product is one of only two players this season to average at least 18.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.5 assists. He's in good company; the other is player is LeBron James.

Evans dominated early against the smaller, 6-foot T.J. Ford, scoring Sacramento's first 10 points of the game. He also added six assists and five rebounds.

Evans said he is taking advantage of his size against smaller guards in the league.

"I don't think any of the guards I've played against so far were physical except for Deron Williams," Evans said. "A little guard like TJ Ford, once I get him with a move I get him on my hip and I can shoot the jump shot or get to the basket and create for others.

"Once I put him on my hip there's no way they can get back in front of me or jump with me. That's my specialty, getting to the basket and creating fouls."

Evans has his Kings rolling. While basketball may be a game of runs, it's been a season of runs for Sacramento.

After losing their first three games on the road to start the season, the Kings split their first two games at home. Since then, the Kings have won four straight, lost four straight and now are in the midst of another four-game winning streak.

Sacramento's current streak has the team over .500 for the second time this season.

Of course, there is a rhythm to the Kings' highs and lows. The win streaks are coming during the team's homestands.

The Kings' current success will be put to the test, as Sacramento will play seven of its next 10 games on the road. Sacramento will travel to play Phoenix next on Saturday.

"We have a winning record next week at this time, maybe I'll smoke a cigar," coach Paul Westphal said.

The Pacers are on the wrong side of momentum. Indiana had put together a streak of their own, earning five of their six seasons wins during a five-game win streak from Nov. 4 to Nov. 17. But since that run, Indiana has lost seven of its last eight games.

The game was tied at 79-79 late in the third quarter before Sacramento began to pull away and never relinquished the lead for the remainder of the contest. The Kings hit 7-for-10 from 3-point range in the second half.

The Kings showed faith in the legs of Donte Greene to begin the fourth quarter, drawing up a play in which Sergio Rodriguez flung an alley-oop pass towards the vacant rim, only to have Greene appear backdoor for the baseline flush.

"That's an option on the play and we wanted to look for that first and it was there," Westphal said.

Greene said after the game that it was a simple moment of eye-contact that led to the trusting pass and acrobatic finish. The play was emblematic of the increased chemistry shown amongst Kings teammates. Sacramento had a season-high 28 assists in the game.

"Everyone can make plays and make things happen," Rodriguez said. "The chemistry is amazing."

In the final moments of the contest, Danny Granger was fouled by Ime Udoka on a 3-point attempt with 18.5 seconds remaining for a chance to put Indiana within reach. Granger made two of the three free throws to pull the Pacers within three points but Evans made both free throws to seal the victory.

After sitting on Nov. 25 with a sprained MCL in his left knee, Granger looks to be in prime form. In his third game back from the one-game hiatus, Granger hit six 3-pointers on his way to a game-high 33 points.

Second-year guard Brandon Rush had started in all 15 games for the Pacers but was only averaging 7.8 points per game. After being held scoreless in Indiana's last game at Golden State, Rush played just 8 minutes on Wednesday night in Sacramento and scored just one point on a free throw.

Sacramento guard Beno Udrih was 13-of -15 from the field in his previous two games. With his 50 percent (4-for-8) performance off the bench on Wednesday night, Westphal joked he might be in a slump.

"I don't know where we'd be without out him," Westphal said. "He comes in and steadies us and seems to provide whatever it is that we need."

Wednesday night's attendance of 10,021 is a Sacramento-era low in attendance.
