Hornets-Lakers Preview

The Los Angeles Lakers are settling down defensively after an inconsistent start. That doesn't bode well for a New Orleans Hornets team that could be without two of their top scorers.

Winners of six straight, the Lakers will not have to contend with Chris Paul and may not have to worry about Peja Stojakovic in a matchup with the Hornets on Tuesday night.

Los Angeles (13-3) is holding opponents to an average of 90.8 points during its winning streak after surrendering at least 100 in its previous three contests. The Lakers are coming off one of their best games of the season defensively, albeit against winless New Jersey in a 106-87 victory Sunday night.

"The defense is getting better and better," Los Angeles star Kobe Bryant said. "We're working really, really hard at it. Energy has been consistent. This is something we feel like we can maintain."

Los Angeles held New Orleans (7-10) to 36.5 percent shooting in a 104-88 home win Nov. 8, even though Paul and Stojakovic both played.

Paul, who had 15 points and nine assists, is now out indefinitely with a sprained ankle. Stojakovic, meanwhile, missed New Orleans' 112-96 loss to Sacramento on Sunday night due to personal reasons, and it's uncertain if he'll rejoin the Hornets in time to face the Lakers.

Stojakovic is averaging 11.6 points while making 38.8 percent of his shots from 3-point range. James Posey replaced him in the starting lineup versus the Kings and scored eight points in 41 minutes.

New Orleans has lost two of three after winning its previous three. The Hornets have dropped four straight on the road and are 1-9 away from New Orleans Arena.

David West has needed to carry more of the scoring burden with Paul sidelined. He's averaging 15.8 points, but has totaled 51 over his last two games.

West will likely draw Los Angeles defensive stopper Ron Artest, whose scoring has fallen in his first season on the talent-rich Lakers. Artest has posted 12.2 points per game, nearly five below last season's average, but is shooting 39.1 percent from 3-point range.

Bryant made five 3-pointers and finished with 30 points against the Nets. He went into that contest with seven 3-pointers made this season, and he's now shooting 27.9 percent (12 for 43) from beyond the arc.

Backup point guard Jordan Farmar, meanwhile, is 5 for 8 from long range over his last two games, scoring a total of 25 points during that span. The former first-round pick has given Los Angeles a boost with starter Derek Fisher off to an inconsistent start.

"I like the aggressiveness," Los Angeles coach Phil Jackson said of Farmar. "There are obviously things that I want him to do a little bit better all the time, and that's natural. ... That aggressiveness he has with the basketball in the end of quarters is really important for us. We really need that."

Lakers show off all their weapons in win over Hornets

LOS ANGELES (NBA.com exclusive) -- No Chris Paul. No Peja Stojakovic. No Byron Scott.

A lot has changed since the Hornets' last visit to Staples Center three weeks ago. The result was the same, however, as the Lakers used a huge second-quarter run to blow out the Hornets 110-99 on Tuesday.

Five Lakers scored in double figures with only two players taking more than 10 shots.

"We have so many weapons, so many guys who can be effective and put up big numbers any night," said Lakers forward Pau Gasol, who had 14 points on 3-for-6 shooting. "It's more fun when we share the ball. It makes us more dangerous because team's really don't know who to stop with so many options and players."

Lakers center Andrew Bynum finished with a game-high 21 points on 9-for-10 shooting and nine rebounds.

"Bynum, he just went off," Hornets center Hilton Armstrong said. "We couldn't stop him."

The Lakers (14-3), with a league-best seven straight wins, hold the best record in the league.

"I want it at the end of the season," Gasol said. "Not just right now. It's definitely a good sign that we're up there right now, but we can't rely on it too much.

This game was close in the first quarter with the Hornets (7-11) trailing by just four, 31-27.

After shooting 60 percent in the first quarter, New Orleans cooled off, missing 16 of its 22 shots in the second.

In the second quarter, Los Angeles went on a 21-4 run capped by a Derek Fisher 3-pointer to break open the game at 56-35 with 2:16 left before half.

"There was no continuation of what we did in the first quarter," said Hornets forward David West, who finished with eight points and three rebounds in 27 minutes. "These last couple of games we just don't have a clear definition of roles in terms of what guys are supposed to do. Too many guys trying to score the basketball and that just leaves us sporadic. We're too far all over the place.

"If [the Lakers] can share the ball, there's no reason why we can't share the ball."

The Lakers didn't need a big game from Kobe Bryant (18 points) and Ron Artest (16). Fisher, who has been productive of late, scored seven points and had season highs in assists (seven) and steals (five).

Leading 62-42 at half, the Lakers seemingly traded baskets with the Hornets in the third and continued to get to the free-throw line, going 28-for-33 to just 13-for-15 for the Hornets.

A positive for the Hornets was the steady play of rookie guard Darren Collison and Emeka Okafor's double-double (17 points and 12 rebounds).

Collison, who came in averaging 10.6 points, had 13 of his team-high 20 in the first half, including a 3-pointer right before the halftime buzzer.

"Just trying to be aggressive," Collison said. "But, [this loss] hurts because everyone is playing so hard. It's frustrating, but we have to continue to fight for it."

With no timetable to Paul's return from a left ankle sprain he suffered on Nov. 13 against Portland, Collison has stepped in skillfully -- averaging 15.2 points and 5.8 assists during Paul's absence.

"It's been crazy," said Collison before Tuesday's game. "Last time I played here [Staples Center], I didn't really think I was going to play a lot, but I got a chance to get in the game and got a chance to showcase my talents."

With the loss against the Lakers, Hornets coach Jeff Bower is now 4-5 since taking over for Scott, who was fired on Nov. 12 after a 3-6 start.

While the Hornets are still not right, Lakers coach Phil Jackson weighed in pregame on what has happened to the team that once was a championship contender two seasons ago.

"More than anything else, whatever happened on Tyson Chandler's trade and negation of the trade and returning back to his club probably kind of hurt that team more than anything else philosophically, psychologically as a team," Jackson said.

As for the Lakers, Jackson said he will get an idea of the what this team is made of soon.

"I think we'll get, really, a measure of this team, with Miami and Phoenix on Friday and Saturday," he said.

Notes: Stojakovic, who has missed the past two games because he is attending to family matters, will likely return on Friday against Minnesota.
