The Denver Nuggets are leading the Northwest Division, have the third-highest scoring team in the NBA and are one game removed from their superstar posting a career-high 50 points in their fourth straight win.

Despite all those positives, George Karl is only concerned with what he witnessed most recently.

Two days after the Nuggets coach called his team an "embarrassment" following a stunning home loss, Denver looks to bounce back Tuesday as it hosts red-hot guard Monta Ellis and the Golden State Warriors.

Denver (12-5) had won four in a row and six of seven coming into Sunday's game against Minnesota - then 1-15 - and Carmelo Anthony looked as locked in as he'd ever been. The two-time All-Star had scored 50 points in a 128-125 victory over the New York Knicks on Friday to boost his league-best scoring average to 30.9.

Anthony upped it to 31.0 by scoring 32 against the Timberwolves, but there was no celebration at the Pepsi Center. The Nuggets allowed the woeful Timberwolves to connect on 51.2 percent of their shots in a shocking 106-100 loss, snapping a 17-game regular-season home winning streak dating to March 11.

"Tonight, we're an embarrassment and we have to live with it for the next 48 hours,'' Karl said.

"Tell me the five guys that I can put on the court to play hard every possession. Tell me. I had it last year. I had a play-hard team last year. I don't have a play-hard team this year and it's making me very angry.''

Denver had also won 10 in a row against Minnesota, and held a 14-point halftime lead before collapsing at the hands of a team that had lost its previous 15 games by an average of 15.8 points.

"That team is not going to stop playing just because they lost 15 straight. That don't matter," said forward Kenyon Martin, who had 16 points and 14 rebounds. "They are a professional team and they got pride and so we got exactly what we deserved - nothing more, nothing less.''

The Nuggets' first chance at redemption comes against another last-place team, but it's hard to classify the Warriors (6-10) as pushovers.

Golden State averages 109.6 points - 0.4 more than Denver - after giving that number a big boost Monday night. Ellis scored a career-high 45 points before fouling out with 6:03 left in a 126-107 win during which the Warriors trailed by as many as 15.

"Monta has been playing at a level that's been pretty incredible,'' said interim coach Keith Smart, filling in while Don Nelson recovers from pneumonia. "... Watching him evolve into this guy we all knew could be special, he's starting to do that.''

This wasn't Ellis' only recent outstanding performance. He's averaging 35.2 points and 3.8 steals in his last five games.

Ellis has averaged 22.7 points and 3.3 steals while shooting 41.8 percent in his last three games versus Denver. He missed two of the teams' three meetings in 2008-09, while serving a 30-game suspension following an offseason moped accident.

The Warriors could use another huge effort from Ellis after the team's lengthy injured list added another name. Forward Anthony Randolph left Monday's win with a foot injury, meaning Golden State could have as many as seven inactive players Tuesday.

Starting center Mikki Moore, meanwhile, has a bone spur in his right heel but is continuing to play as one of the team's few options up front.

Anthony has scored at least 25 points in 14 straight games against the Warriors, who haven't swept games on back-to-back days in 20 chances since winning at Miami and Orlando on March 7 and 8, 2008.

Nuggets bounce back in big way against Warriors

DENVER (NBA.com exclusive) -- The taste of Sunday's bitter loss was still with the Nuggets two days later. Getting beat by a struggling Minnesota team in a building where they've cruised did not sit well with a team harboring championship aspirations.

The Nuggets washed away the bitterness by routing an undersized and undermanned Golden State team 135-107 Tuesday night.

Denver might have felt sorry for the Warriors, who dressed nine and played eight, but not enough to give them a chance to win after kicking one away to the Timberwolves.

"I think everybody was mad," said Carmelo Anthony, who had a team-high 25 points. "When you lose a game like that against Minnesota, the way we lost, negativity comes around. Tonight we did a good job of keeping that out of the locker room."

The Warriors' bench on Tuesday seemed crowded after they had only six players available against Dallas last week. But Golden State has proven that size and numbers don't necessarily matter. The Warriors beat the Mavericks in Dallas with a short bench, something Denver noticed.

But after beating Indiana at home Monday night, the Golden State legs weren't as springy.

"We played hard for a quarter and a half and then we just couldn't compete," Golden State acting head coach Keith Smart said. "We just didn't have enough tonight."

Even though the Warriors were shorthanded, the Nuggets weren't taking them lightly. They wanted to bury them early.

"We came in with a defensive mindset, saying these guys are explosive, we've got to get stops, let's get to the basket and get layups to try to stop them from running," guard Chauncey Billups said. "We did all those things and we did them pretty well tonight."

The Warriors led early before Denver used a 28-10 run in the second quarter to grab a 67-45 lead. Golden State scored 10 points in the final 1:21 of the first half to get within 14 at the break. But unlike Sunday, Denver didn't let up in the third, following up their 44-point second period with 38 in the third to take a 107-84 lead heading to the fourth.

By then, Golden State star Monta Ellis was on the bench getting rest and the Warriors were all but conceding the win to Denver.

"When I saw the score and saw we didn't have the flow necessary, it made no sense getting him back in there," Smart said of Ellis, who had 15 points.

Seeing the opponent's best player on the bench for most of the second half was a welcome sight for the Nuggets. It meant they took care of business and shook off the sting of Sunday's loss

"It was more mentally challenging for us," Anthony said.

This time, Denver did what it has done over the past two seasons -- beat up lesser teams, especially at home. Tuesday's convincing win showed the Minnesota game was an aberration.

"You can't make the same mistakes twice, so we learned from our mistakes," Kenyon Martin said.

It's important for Denver the lesson stick for the rest of the season. The Nuggets feel they're good enough to contend for the NBA title, but in the competitive Western Conference, every win is at a premium. It showed last year when they were able to grab the No. 2 seed.

"We're trying to put a big number on the board to get the best home-court situation we can get," Nuggets coach George Karl said. "It's an 82-game marathon. Last year, getting the second seed and getting a couple upset situations was very beneficial to us."

That's why beating struggling teams is important.

"Any advantage we can get by winning as many games in the regular season, that's our challenge," Karl said. "I don't expect us not to give one away, I hope that number is slim and thin and I also hope the ones we steal are a little bigger and a little larger. There are always games you shouldn't have won and you did. To have a special year and a special number, you've got to have a little luck."

And beat up on the lower-echelon teams.
