Suns-Raptors Preview

With Steve Nash leading the way, the Phoenix Suns have been very tough to slow down through the first month of the season.

The Toronto Raptors are quite familiar with just how hard it can be.

Nash looks to help the surging Suns win their 12th straight game over the sluggish Raptors on Sunday at Air Canada Centre.

Despite being 35 years old, Nash is excelling at running Phoenix's high-octane offense. The two-time MVP is averaging an NBA-high and career-best 11.8 assists, helping the Suns (13-3) jump out to the best record in the league.

Nash was hardly needed in Friday's 120-95 victory over Minnesota, finishing with nine points and 11 assists in 27 minutes in Phoenix's third straight win. The Suns' offense has been red-hot during the winning streak, averaging 121.0 points on 59.7 percent shooting while outscoring opponents by an average of 22.0.

"This year we have started with a singular vision," said Nash, shooting 69.6 percent from the field in the last three games. "Everyone enjoys each other and has a great time on and off the court together, and I think that allows us this year to have better depth."

The Raptors (7-10) already have gotten a taste of this season's Suns team.

Phoenix defeated Toronto 101-100 on Nov. 15 behind Amare Stoudemire's 30 points, but it was Nash's late heroics that won the game.

With the Suns trailing by two, Nash came through with a driving layup and was fouled, and the resulting free throw with 38.9 seconds left provided the final margin. He finished with 23 points and nine assists.

That victory marked Phoenix's 11th straight over the Raptors since a 101-94 loss Feb. 10, 2004, the final meeting before Nash re-signed with the Suns.

Nash, who sat out a 133-113 win over the Raptors on Feb. 27 with a sprained right ankle, is averaging 15.4 points and 12.9 assists in the 10 games against Toronto since the win streak began. He hasn't lost to the Raptors since Nov. 2, 2001, while playing for Dallas, a span of 15 games.

The Suns aren't the only team that has been giving Toronto fits lately.

After losing to Charlotte 116-81 on Wednesday, the most lopsided defeat in franchise history, the Raptors fell 116-103 to Boston on Friday.

Chris Bosh had 20 points and 13 rebounds for his 11th double-double in 12 games, but Toronto lost for the sixth time in its last eight.

"There's a lot of frustration in this locker room, and we have to say 'enough is enough,'" reserve Antoine Wright said. "If we continue to go forward like this, it's going to continue to happen to us. We can't blame the refs; we can't blame the game plan. It's about making hard cuts and getting the ball where it's supposed to be."

Defensive struggles have been a big reason for the team's recent woes.

Toronto allowed the Celtics to shoot 62.3 percent from the floor and is yielding an average of 112.0 points in its last eight games.

Fixing these defensive problems won't be easy against the high-powered Suns.

Phoenix is averaging a league-best 111.9 points and is the NBA's only team to hit triple digits in every game this season.

Nash's double-double drives Suns to sound win over Raps

TORONTO (NBA.com exclusive) -- This homecoming was sweet for Steve Nash.

"He's Kid Canada," Grant Hill said of the performance his teammate put on in front of his Canadian fans.

A road game for the Phoenix Suns was a home game of sorts for Nash. Scoring 20 points and dishing 16 assists, Nash led his Suns to a 113-94 victory over the Toronto Raptors. The victory marked the Suns' 12th straight over Toronto, with Nash having never lost to the Raptors since donning a Phoenix uniform.

"He played like he's played all season," Hill continued. "Twenty and 16 is kind of like an average game [for him]. I think we're spoiled. We see that and expect that. He just plays great. Whether he's scoring or assisting, whatever he's doing out there, he's helping our ball club."

Phoenix coach Alvin Gentry took the praise a step higher.

"I wouldn't trade him for anybody in the league," Gentry said. "I really wouldn't. The way we play and what we want to do, he's our guy. I wouldn't trade him."

The Raptors likely had wished Nash played for a franchise other than the Suns as he picked apart their defense and found the open man Sunday afternoon. The win was moved the Suns to 14-3 on the season to tie their franchise's best start.

Gentry was full of praise Sunday afternoon, reserving some of it for Chris Bosh who was brilliant for the Raptors in the loss, finishing with 30 points and 17 rebounds.

"I know you guys are going to think I'm crazy, but I thought we did a good job on Chris Bosh," Gentry said. "With the muscle he has added I think he's impossible. I don't know how you guard him or what you do. He has the ability to set up outside and make jump shots and then he's so much stronger taking the ball inside on his post-ups now."

While Bosh was the bright spot for the Raptors, Andrea Bargnani added 24 points and rookie DeMar DeRozan scored 14. But it wasn't enough to compete with the Suns, who had six players in double figures, led by Jason Richardson's 22 points and nine rebounds. Amar'e Stoudemire added 18 on 8-for-10 shooting.

The Raptors bench scored a season-low in points as the Suns reserves doubled their output 28-14, led by Leandro Barbosa, who scored 17 before leaving the game with an ankle sprain early in the fourth.

With the teams trading 3-pointers on the first two possessions of the game, it looked as though the shootout many expected would take place.

Then the Raptors went cold -- ice cold-- from beyond the arc.

"When you go 1-for-20, that is the difference in the game right there," Raptors coach Jay Triano said.

The Raptors simply could not buy a bucket from deep. While the Suns shot 43 percent from deep, the Raptors had 20 attempts, making just one to shoot 5 percent from 3-point range.

With Phoenix leading by as many as 10 in the first half, the Raptors made their push to close out the second quarter, cutting the deficit to trail by one at the break despite shooting just 39 percent. A flagrant foul committed by Stoudemire on Bosh kept the crowd buzzing through the break.

In the third, it was all Phoenix.

Pouring on a 30-12 run to jump ahead by as many as 19 in the third, the game appeared to be approaching blowout territory before the Raptors used a bench lineup along with Hedo Turkoglu to close in within eight to start the fourth.

While the Raptors nipped at Phoenix's heels in the fourth, a Suns victory was never truly in doubt as they slowly extended what was a nine-point lead back to 19 with the insertion of Nash back into the lineup after he started the fourth quarter on the bench.

After shooting 2-for-7 in the first half, Nash found his touch and the rest of his squad benefited from his ball movement, with Nash recording one more assist than the Raptors had as a team.

Triano admitted his team was at a loss for how to handle Nash.

"We went under [screens], trapped, we tried everything we could," Triano said. "I think for the most part we surprised him on the first possession of each change defensively, they either missed or we got the ball, but the second time he recognizes what you did."

Nash recognized and took advantage of a Raptors team that is still trying to find its footing defensively and figure out how to prevent third-quarter collapses from becoming habit.

"Whatever it is, we have to get it turned around," Jarrett Jack said. "The third quarter has been detrimental for the past two games and we have to come out with a better start."

Giving up 51 percent shooting to the Suns for the game, Toronto finished just 39 percent, as they tried to shoot themselves back into the game late, coming up empty on eight attempts from long range in the fourth.

"We just missed shots," Bosh said. "I wouldn't say it was the 3s. We took open shots and we missed them. They didn't go down. It happens like that sometimes and that was the way it was tonight."

Bosh said he's open to suggestions about what else he can do to help his team.

"I'll try anything. Whatever it takes to win," Bosh said. "That's my position on everything. Just have to turn this thing around and find a way to win basketball games."

When Nash was told that his coach said he wouldn't take another point guard in the league, he smiled.

"That's really sweet of the old guy, but I'm sure if they offered Chris Paul for me, they'd kick me out the door. Good one, Alvin."

Sitting at 14-3, there is room for a little joking in the Suns locker room.
