The Memphis Grizzlies and Los Angeles Clippers aren't division rivals, but they have to be feeling that way as they meet for the third time in just over three weeks.

Right now, they also have to be feeling pretty good about themselves.

The surging Grizzlies look to build on their most impressive win yet as they continue a five-game road trip Sunday afternoon against the Clippers, winners of three of four.

The Grizzlies (6-10) began 1-8 and lost all five games during its first long trip, concluding with a 113-110 loss to the Clippers on Nov. 7.

Memphis has turned it around from there, averaging 105.1 points and shooting 50.9 percent while going 5-2 since Nov. 14, with four of those wins coming after releasing Allen Iverson.

The Grizzlies' latest victory was certainly their best of the bunch. Memphis took a 29-point lead at Portland late in the second quarter Friday night and held on to win 106-96 against the Western Conference's stingiest defense.

"It was an awesome performance from start to finish. They came in and were ready to play. It was beautiful,'' coach Lionel Hollins said. "This is the best we've played against a quality opponent."

Rudy Gay, Zach Randolph, O.J. Mayo and Marc Gasol are all averaging at least 15.4 points, but the main credit for the Grizzlies' turnaround belongs with their defense. Memphis was allowing 111.1 points per game during its 1-8 start but has cut that to 100.7 over its last seven.

"We knew going into the season that we weren't going to have any trouble scoring, but defensively, it takes a team effort, mental discipline and toughness to win," said Mayo, who's been held to 12.0 points per game against the Clippers.

Gay has to be the biggest concern for Los Angeles (7-10) as the teams meet for the third time since Nov. 7. He's averaged 27.0 points as the teams have split two meetings, and has scored at least 20 points in Memphis' last eight games against the Clippers.

Gasol has averaged 15.3 points, 9.7 rebounds and 5.7 assists in the Grizzlies' three latest games against Los Angeles, but he'll have his hands full inside against Chris Kaman.

Kaman has averaged 21.5 points versus Memphis, and scored 26 points on 11 of 13 shooting to spark a 104-96 win at Detroit on Friday after going 9 of 39 from the field in his previous two games.

The Clippers outscored the Pistons 46-26 in the paint despite being outrebounded 43-35.

"We've got some guys that can post up and we did a good job of getting them there," coach Mike Dunleavy told the NBA's official Web site. "We took advantage of it."

Los Angeles will need Kaman and Marcus Camby to lead a better effort on the glass Sunday. The Grizzlies score a league-best 51.8 points in the paint thanks largely to their NBA-best 13.7 offensive rebounds per game. Memphis has averaged 54.0 points in the paint in its first two games against Los Angeles.

The Clippers also would love for Al Thornton to continue his turnaround. The third-year forward has averaged 19.0 points over his last seven games after scoring 8.6 points per game in his first 10. Thornton scored a career-high 39 points in a 110-97 home win over the Grizzlies on March 29, 2008.

Clips stage double-digit rally in 4th to knock off Grizzlies

LOS ANGELES (NBA.com exclusive) -- For one of the few times in recent memory, the fourth quarter belonged to the Los Angeles Clippers.

Staring at a 15-point deficit to start the final quarter against a team that had won five of its last seven, the Clippers regrouped and reenergized behind Eric Gordon, Al Thornton and a stifling defense, allowing them to catch up and then pull away for a 98-88 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies at Staples Center.

The Clippers (8-10) scored the final 22 points in winning for the fourth time in the last five games.

"All of a sudden, it came together," said Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy, who earned his 600th regular season victory as a head coach. "The aggressiveness, the double-teaming, the rotations, the pick-and-roll defense....it was all there in the fourth quarter."

The Clippers had made a habit of fading down the stretch this season, especially on their home floor. Two weeks ago, they allowed the final 16 points in a 15-point loss to the visiting Toronto Raptors.

But something clicked down the stretch against the Grizzlies (6-11). After Memphis center Marc Gasol scored on jump hook with 5:26 remaining, stretching his season-high point total to 26 points and pushing the Grizzlies' lead back to 12 points, the Clippers responded with one of the strongest defensive stretches in the club's recent history.

The front line starting blocking shots and rebounding, the backcourt began forcing turnovers and Gordon and Thornton blew past the Grizzlies in the open court, scoring 10 points each in the final quarter.

Gordon, in his first game back in the starting lineup since injuring his groin against the Grizzlies on Nov. 7 at Staples Center, finished with a season-high 29 points. Thornton scored 18 points and Marcus Camby and Baron Davis contributed 14 apiece. Camby also secured 14 rebounds and blocked three shots.

Chris Kaman, saddled with foul trouble for most of the game, scored in single digits for the first time this season, but six of his eight points and six of his 11 rebounds came in the final quarter, when the Clippers outscored the Grizzlies 33-7.

"Guys were scrapping," Camby said. "We had a lot of guys on the floor scrapping for loose balls and we were coming away with it, and Eric and Al were doing a great job of pushing the basketball and finishing on the other end."

The only downside to the fourth quarter came when Gordon hobbled off the court with 1:19 remaining after feeling tightness in his hamstring.

"Hopefully, we got it early enough that it's not a big deal," Dunleavy said, knocking on the wooden table in the post-game press conference.

Early on, it appeared it would be a long afternoon for the Clippers. The Grizzlies shot better than 60 percent in each of the first two quarters, then extended their lead to as many as 20 points late in the third.

With Kaman picking up his third foul midway through the second quarter and his fourth early in the third, Gasol had his way against backup DeAndre Jordan, who had missed the previous three games with a sprained ankle. Gasol made 11 of his first 12 shots and had already surpassed his season-high point total by the start of the fourth quarter.

The Clippers began to chip away, however, cutting the deficit to single digits on a driving layup by Davis with 3:50 remaining.

"I was sitting on the bench in the fourth quarter and I was talking to Mardy Collins and Coach [John] Lucas and I said, 'If we can get it to six with four minutes left, I have a good feeling that we're going to win this ball game.' " Davis said.

The Clippers cut the deficit to six one possession later on a steal by Kaman followed by Gordon's fast-break layup. They didn't stop there, however, running off another 16 straight points to end the game.

Dunleavy called it the most satisfying win of the season.

"If you spot anybody 20 points and come back to win, it's a heckuva win," he said.
