A third consecutive victory might not matter much to most teams, but it should mean a great deal to the Oklahoma City Thunder if they get one Sunday.

Besides matching their longest winning streak since relocating to Oklahoma, the Thunder would move three games above .500 for the first time in nearly five years and halt an 11-game losing streak to the Houston Rockets.

Led by recent lottery picks Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook, Oklahoma City (9-7) is off to a good start following three consecutive last-place finishes in the Northwest Division.

The second-year Thunder's longest winning streak is three, achieved Feb. 28-March 4, and the franchise hasn't had a better one since Seattle won four straight April 2-9, 2006.

Oklahoma City opened this season 2-0 only to lose its next three, so a victory Sunday would put the team three games above .500 for the first time since the SuperSonics ended the 2004-05 season at 52-30.

While Durant has turned into a star, averaging 27.5 points, a big reason the Thunder are in this position is the development of Westbrook.

The fourth overall pick in 2008 had 20 points and seven assists Friday while outplaying rookie sensation Brandon Jennings in a 108-90 win over Milwaukee. Westbrook scored nine points during a 17-0 run to open the second half, and helped hold Jennings to 3-of-11 shooting and 12 points.

"I don't get buzzed up for anybody. I just go out and play my game, regardless of who it is," Westbrook said.

The UCLA product, averaging 18.4 points in the last eight games, has contributed 6.9 assists and 4.8 rebounds per game this season and even has five blocks over the past three.

"My job as a point guard is to get us going, especially on the defensive end, whether it's rebounding or passing the ball or defending, just get our team going on the right track," he said.

Westbrook had a season-high 33 points in the Thunder's lone matchup with the Rockets this season and Durant added 27, but Houston won 105-94 at home Nov. 6.

The Rockets took away Oklahoma City's other threats offensively and may employ a similar defensive strategy Sunday as they go for a 12th straight win over the Thunder franchise, dating to a 104-87 loss April 4, 2006.

Houston was much happier with its defense Friday despite losing, 92-84 to San Antonio, after letting Dallas shoot 65.5 percent in a 130-99 home loss Wednesday.

Friday marked the first time in four games the Rockets (8-8) held a team below 105 points, but offense turned out to be the problem. They shot a season-worst 35.9 percent from the field.

"We'd like to put together a game where we play well and feel good about ourselves on both ends," forward Shane Battier said. "We feel if we do that then winning and losing will take care of itself. We need to put together a full game."

Battier has been inconsistent offensively and went scoreless Friday, ending a streak of 27 consecutive games with a 3-pointer.

Luis Scola, however, has been playing well with averages of 18.4 points and 11.4 rebounds over the last five games.

Landry, Brooks shake off first-half woes, power Rockets' win

OKLAHOMA CITY (NBA.com exclusive) -- Houston Rockets point guard Aaron Brooks was stifled by Oklahoma City's pressuring defense in the first half. Rockets forward Carl Landry was hobbled by foul trouble in the early going, too.

That didn't stop either player from catching fire when it mattered most to lead Houston to a 100-91 win over the Thunder at the Ford Center.

"I just wanted to be more aggressive in the second half," Brooks said.

He'd been held to just three points on 1-for-6 shooting in the first half but was 7-for-9 and scored 18 points after intermission.

Landry scored 17 of his 21 points in the second half when the Rockets rallied from a nine point, 54-45 deficit at the break.

"This was a tough loss for us," Thunder coach Scott Brooks told reporters. "We had opportunities to win an ugly game but their 23 offensive rebounds were tough to overcome."

Oklahoma City (9-8) held Houston (9-8) to just 40.4 percent shooting but most of those missed shots ended up back in the hands of the Rockets who had an amazing 23-8 edge in offensive rebounds.

"The energy on the offensive boards was great," said Houston forward Shane Battier who had seven points and three rebounds.

"It was a good win for us and they were a hot team coming in," he said.

Oklahoma City carried a two game winning streak into the game and the Thunder had won three of their last four. The Rockets came into the game struggling after losing their last two at home to Dallas and San Antonio.

In the beginning it looked like both trends would continue, when the Thunder battered the Rockets early.

Houston's Luis Scola was severely scratched on his right eyelid by Oklahoma City's Etan Thomas when Scola tried to contest Thomas' thunderous slam to open the game. Play was stopped for a few minutes while Scola was tended to. He left the court with a towel wrapped around his face.

"We kept waiting for Luis to come around the corner, hoping he could just rub some dirt in it or something," said Battier while sitting next to a bandaged Scola in the Rockets' dressing room. "But he never came back so we had to do it oursleves."

It took seven stitches to close the cut and Scola was not able to return. He came into the contest averaging 15.3 points and 9.9 rebounds a game.

Five minutes after Scola went down the Thunder went on a 10-0 run turning an 11-10 Houston lead into a 20-11 deficit. The Rockets were shaking their heads seeing their opponents go on a big run for the third game in a row.

Before the opening quarter was done Houston lost forward Carl Landry, Scola's replacement, to foul trouble. He was whistled for his third foul with 3:10 to play and did not return until the start of the second half.

Once back in the lineup Landry made an immediate impact, scoring the first basket of the second half.

"We got off to a great start in the third quarter for a change," said Brooks. "We stuck with it and played hard. It's definitely a good feeling to help my team win."

Houston outscored Oklahoma City 55-37 in the second half, dropping in 31 points in the critical fourth quarter while holding the Thunder to just 20.

"I thought we just stayed with it tonight," said Rockets coach Rick Adelman. "The second half was one of our better halves of the year and this was one of our better wins."

The Rockets also beat Oklahoma City in Houston earlier in the season.

Both teams came in short-handed as Oklahoma City dressed only nine players, all of whom played on Sunday. The Thunder played without center Nenad Krstic, forward Nick Collison and guards Kevin Ollie, Kyle Weaver and Shaun Livingston. But Brooks refused to use that as an excuse.

"We've had a bad break with our injuries but every team goes through that," he said. "I don't think fatigue played a role. We just didn't have the energy we needed to block out and prevent them from getting those offensive rebounds."

Kevin Durant led the Thunder with 25 points, nine rebounds and six assists. However, Durant also was forced into six turnovers. Westbrook added 20 points and five assists.

In addition to the 21 points apiece from Brooks and Landry, Houston got 17 points from Trevor Ariza. It took him 23 shots to get there, though. Ariza was just 1-for-9 on 3-pointers and was hounded most of the night by defensive stopper Thabo Sefolosha.

Houston has had to play all season with a makeshift lineup after the losses of Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady. Yao is out for the season while McGrady -- who has said he's ready to play after knee surgery -- could return soon. In the meantime, the Rockets have been trying to reinvent themselves with various combinations. Coach Rick Adelman had to use all of them Sunday night.
