Magic-Bucks Preview

One week ago, the Orlando Magic and the Milwaukee Bucks had two of the best records in the Eastern Conference. While the reigning conference champion Magic are just as confident after a big win over another contender, the upstart Bucks have begun to slip.

The Magic go for their seventh win in eight games Saturday night when they visit the Bucks, losers of three straight.

Orlando (12-4) had a few stumbles while dealing with key injuries and suspensions early in the season, but those absences didn't stop the Magic from getting off to a hot start. They rebounded from their fourth loss with a 93-76 win at Atlanta on Thursday night, handing the Southeast Division rival Hawks their first home defeat while taking over the best record in the East.

Dwight Howard had 16 points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots in the second half as Orlando rallied from a 12-point halftime deficit. He finished with 22 points, 17 rebounds and four blocks.

"I came out in the second half and just trusted my teammates," Howard said. "They made some open shots and I tried to dominate the paint. It doesn't matter if we're down 20, we're going to continue to fight."

Howard, who's shooting 62.6 percent from the field - the third-best mark in the league - took 14 shots against the Hawks after averaging less than seven over his previous five games.

"The last couple of games I haven't been aggressive enough," he said. "Tonight I just kept asking for the ball, and we played inside-out, and it was successful for us.''

The Magic have had a lot of success against the Bucks with Howard in the lineup, winning seven of the last eight in the series when the three-time All-Star plays. Howard averaged 23.3 points, 11.0 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 3.3 blocked shots while shooting 61.3 percent in three victories over Milwaukee last season. He missed a 98-80 loss at the Bradley Center on April 13 because of a sore left knee.

Howard has 14 double-doubles in 17 career games against the Bucks.

This season's Milwaukee team appeared capable of ending its troubles in this series during its hot start, but the Bucks (8-6) have struggled lately. They opened 8-3 but have since dropped three in a row, including a 108-90 loss - their most lopsided of the season - at Oklahoma City on Friday night.

Milwaukee gave up 17 straight points at the start of the third quarter to make a one-point halftime deficit much larger.

Standout rookie Brandon Jennings had 12 points and went 3 for 11 from the field against the Thunder, struggling for the third straight game after carrying the Bucks with 25.3 points per game during their strong start.

"I just wasn't knocking anything down," the 10th overall pick in June's draft said.

Jennings is averaging 26.4 points and shooting 50.6 percent in the team's eight wins. He's been held to 17.5 points and 35.2 percent shooting in its six losses.

Though Bucks coach Scott Skiles has been very complimentary of Jennings, Milwaukee's recent slump has been frustrating.

"It's very difficult to win in this league with young, inexperienced players because they're too inconsistent," Skiles said Friday.

Howard, Magic storm back in third to drop Bucks

MILWAUKEE (NBA.com exclusive) -- The difference between a settled veteran team and a young squad still feeling its way was on display Saturday night.

The Orlando Magic rode the big plays of stars Vince Carter and Dwight Howard down the stretch and pulled out a 100-98 victory over the short-handed Milwaukee Bucks before 16,128 at the Bradley Center.

Howard finished with 25 points and 20 rebounds, pulling in all four of his offensive boards in the final three minutes to kill any hopes Milwaukee had of pulling ahead down the stretch.

"He really turned it on in the second half," Orlando coach Stan Van Gundy said. "He played great."

Carter also had 25 for Orlando, which improved to 13-4 with its seventh victory in eight games.

Ersan Ilyasova had 20 points and a career-high 16 rebounds and Luke Ridnour also had 20 for Milwaukee. But the Bucks lost its fourth straight and fell to 8-7.

Howard also finished with four blocks, three in a six-minute span of the third quarter that saw Orlando turn a 15-point deficit into a 73-72 lead entering the fourth period.

"We stepped it up and played better defense," Howard said.

Two of Howard's blocks in that span came on Bucks rookie Brandon Jennings. Jennings had 18 points but made just 7-for-22 shots as Milwaukee shot just 41 percent for the game.

After Jennings' 3-pointer gave the Bucks a 68-53 lead with 6:59 left in the third, the Orlando defense allowed just two more field goals in 13 attempts the rest of the period, outscoring the Bucks 38-13 over the next 13 minutes to build a 91-81 lead with 5:27 left.

"We turned it around good and then got up 10," Van Gundy said. "From 15 down to 10 up. But they kept fighting back. I'm just happy to get out of here with a win."

Jennings' fourth 3-pointer of the night capped a 14-4 run that pulled the Bucks even at 95-95 with 2:40 left.

Howard put the Magic back on top with a tip-in with 2:19 left, but Ersan Ilyasova responded with a rebound hoop of his own.

After Carter made 1-for-2 free throws with 1:44 left, Ilyasova answered -- making one free throw to knot the score at 98-98 with 1:06 left.

Carter missed on the Magic's next possession, but Howard was there for the offensive rebound. That possession led to Rashard Lewis' running 11-foot banker with 44.7 seconds left.

After a timeout, Ilyasova missed an open 3-pointer. Ridnour gathered the loose rebound, but his shot from the right side of the free-throw line was short and Howard gathered in the rebound with about 28 seconds left.

The Bucks chose not to foul, but when Carter missed in the lane, they could not corral the rebound. Howard tipped it a number of times before slapping it out to Matt Barnes, who grabbed it and dribbled out the clock.

"I was trying to tip it to myself, but you've got a veteran in Kurt Thomas and at the end of the game the refs are going to let things happen and it's a war out there," Howard said. "It was about three or four times I was tipping it."

Carter scored 10 in the fourth and 19 in the second half after leaving to get four stitches in his mouth five minutes into the game. His layup and 3-pointer were key in Orlando's late third-quarter rally that erased the 15-point deficit.

"We were very patient and we didn't panic," Carter said. "I've been on teams where we panicked and if we were down nine or down 12, we were trying to figure out how we could get a 10-point play instead of each possession at a time."

The Bucks went 7-for-8 on 3-pointers in the first half and led by as many as 17 at 53-36 before settling for a 56-47 edge at the half.

The lead went back to 15 in the first five minutes of the third before the Magic responded.

Milwaukee played without Andrew Bogut, Luc Richard Mbah a Moute and Michael Redd, who after playing the previous three games sat with a sore knee.

"We got fatigued, you could see it," said Bucks coach Scott Skiles, whose team finished off a 1-3 road trip on Friday night. "We had several breakdowns in a row. ... They sort of just walked us down. We just ran out of gas for awhile and lost our focus."
