Spurs-Rockets Preview

Taking advantage of some home games against teams they expected to beat, the San Antonio Spurs have finally strung some wins together. Their emergence from an early-season slump, however, has yet to be tested on the road.

The Spurs look to extend their season-high winning streak to four games with their first road victory Friday night when they visit the Houston Rockets, in danger of losing consecutive games for the first time.

In part because it's struggled with injuries to some of its top players, San Antonio (7-6) lost six of its first 10 games. The Spurs have rebounded with three straight wins, finishing a four-game homestand by defeating Washington, Milwaukee and a short-handed Golden State team.

Tony Parker scored 32 points and Tim Duncan had 20 points and 10 rebounds as the Spurs beat the Warriors 118-104 on Wednesday night. The Warriors used only nine players, one night after using six in a win at Dallas.

While they're encouraged by their recent play in San Antonio, the Spurs are 0-4 on the road. They're averaging 90.5 points and shooting 41.8 percent from the field away from home, compared to 107.3 points and 48.9 percent at the AT&T Center.

"It will be big," reserve guard Roger Mason Jr. said about this matchup with the Rockets. "We haven't had a lot of success on the road. For us, the road is where we really bond and come together and start doing that."

The Rockets (8-7) have won three of their last four home games against the Spurs after dropping 14 of the previous 18. San Antonio won its last trip to Houston 88-85 on March 14, getting 28 points and eight assists from Parker.

"It's always a rivalry," Parker said. "Going to be a big game and a big test for us because we still need a win on the road. We need to start wining on the road. It's a good game for us and they have been playing well."

Parker might not have seen Houston's performance Wednesday night. The Rockets grabbed an early 13-point lead before falling 130-99 to Dallas. They allowed the Mavericks to shoot 65.5 percent from the field, the highest against them since the Spurs shot 67.6 percent in a 126-105 win on April 7, 1985.

"There wasn't any defense," coach Rick Adelman said. "We didn't even get close enough to them to even foul them in the first half. I don't know what happened."

Houston's miserable defensive performance overshadowed another strong game from reserve forward Carl Landry, who had 24 points and shot 9 for 11 in 29 minutes for his sixth 20-point performance of the season. Landry, fifth in the NBA in bench scoring with 15.7 points per game, is averaging 21.1 points and shooting 71.8 percent in seven home games this season. However, he's been held to 5.4 points in five career games against San Antonio.

While Landry hopes he can finally solve the Spurs' interior defense, Rockets starter Luis Scola will try to carry his road success against his former team into the Toyota Center. The 6-foot-9 forward from Argentina is averaging 16.8 points and shooting 58.7 percent in four games in San Antonio, but he's scored 6.8 points per game and shot 37.9 percent in four home games against the Spurs.

San Antonio drafted Scola in the second round in 2002 and kept him overseas before trading him to Houston before the 2007-08 season.

Spurs guard Manu Ginobili has missed four straight games with a groin injury, and it's unlikely he'll play in Houston.

Spurs 'thrilled' to get out of Houston with a win

HOUSTON (NBA.com exclusive) -- Two streaks were broken Friday night at Toyota Center, and neither was good for the Houston Rockets.

In a game that was more like bad holiday leftovers, the San Antonio Spurs won their first road game of the season, defeating the Rockets 92-84 before 18,164 fans. For the Rockets, it ended a franchise-record streak of the oddball variety -- for 12 straight games they had alternated wins and losses.

Until the Spurs came to town, that is.

The Spurs, playing without the injured Manu Ginobili, used suffocating third-quarter defense to build a solid lead, and hit six straight free throws in the final 33 seconds to win their fourth straight game. And hand the Rockets their second straight loss, the first time this season they have suffered back-to-back losses.

"We're thrilled to get out of here with the win," said San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich. "We hung in and came out and played pretty well in the third quarter and got a lead. Houston did a good job of getting back into the game, but we hung on for the win. It's a good win on the road."

Turning the game to a halfcourt mosh pit, the Spurs worked their frontcourt tandem of Tim Duncan (21 points, 12 rebounds) and Antonio McDyess (15 points, 14 rebounds) to beat the Rockets up inside.

Tony Parker (19 points, seven assists) weaved his way through the Rockets scrambling defense, either finishing at the rim or finding open shooters like McDyess, who enjoyed his best game as a Spur.

"Tony is a great penetrator, so you have to expect that (kickout pass)," said McDyess, who had been averaging 6.8 points and 5.7 rebounds in his first 12 games with the Spurs. "When he gets to the bucket, you expect him to dish it. Fortunately tonight I was able to knock down the shots."

The same cannot be said of the Rockets, who shot a season-low 35.9 percent (33 of 92) for the game. Mired in a halfcourt wrestling match, gazelles like Trevor Ariza (6-of-21, 17 points) and Aaron Brooks (5-of-16, 12 points) found it almost impossible to shake free for easy looks or fast-break layups.

"I thought that tonight we did a good job of slowing them down," Parker said. "We wanted to control their offense and limit fast-breaks for their main guys like Brooks and Ariza. (Luis) Scola hurt us a little bit (18 points, 12 rebounds), but I think we did a good job on defense."

Especially in the third quarter.

The Rockets, one game removed surrendering a 26-0 run to Dallas, endured another brutal stretch of offense against the Spurs. Ahead 46-44 at halftime, the Rockets missed their first 17 shots of the third quarter to fall behind 60-46.

"When that stretch happened, it seemed like it was contagious," said Rockets forward Shane Battier. "We just couldn't buy a bucket."

Scola finally ended the drought by draining a 19-foot jumper with 4:37 to play, and the Rockets wound up shooting 4-of-24 -- 16.7 percent for those of you scoring at home -- in the 12-point third period.

The streak continued a trend of the Rockets coming out cold after halftime -- they have shot just 32.4 percent (37 of 114) in the third quarter over their last five games.

"It's a tough loss," said Rockets coach Rick Adelman. "We had a stretch in the third quarter, and again we could not make a shot. I thought we were getting good looks, especially early. That stretch in the third quarter really hurt us."

Still, the Rockets managed to hang around, scoring eight straight points in a one-minute span to cut what had been a 14-point Spurs lead down to 86-84 with just over 30 seconds left to play.

But Richard Jefferson, fouled on a layup attempt, drilled two free throws with 33.4 seconds remaining to give the Spurs some breathing room.

"I was upset. I was upset that I missed (the layup)," Jefferson said. "Even with the foul, I felt that was a still shot that I could make. I was a little frustrated, but I had to calm myself down and get those two free throws."

George Hill, who shook off a tough blow that resulted in two stitches in his nose, and Keith Bogans finished off the Rockets with four more free throws.

The win seems to be another piece of the puzzle the Spurs have been patiently assembling this season.

San Antonio has been working in new roster additions like Richard Jefferson and McDyess, and those two have been a bit slow to find their way as they instead defer to championship-winning veterans like Duncan, Parker and Ginobili.

But the new guys are starting to find their way.

"You find that you're not as aggressive," said McDyess of coming to a championship-caliber club. "You kind of try to feel it out and see how things go. You don't want to step on toes. You just want to fit in. That's how I felt (when he signed with the Spurs), that I just wanted to fit in. But now I'm getting more and more comfortable with my role, and I know what they need from me."
