AUBURN HILLS (NBA.com exclusive) -- The Los Angeles Clippers already had an advantage on the perimeter. With their guards barreling into the lane and their big men playing unselfishly, they also picked apart the Detroit Pistons' frontcourt.
The Clippers shot a season-high 58.7 percent and pulled away to a 104-96 victory over the undermanned Pistons, who lost their seventh straight. Center Chris Kaman was 11-for-13 while scoring a game-best 26 points and point guard Baron Davis contributed 25 points and 10 assists as the Clippers ended a three-game road losing streak.
Smarting from an 86-73 loss at Indiana Wednesday, the Clippers were determined to get into the lane and create better scoring opportunities. In the process, they snapped a 13-game losing streak to Detroit.
"We shared the ball, we set picks and we played better team basketball today than we did against Indiana," Davis said. "It's crucial for us because we could be a good road team if we just establish our focus and get our identity down, as far as who we want to be as a team."
If the Clippers continue to play with the fire they displayed during the fourth quarter, they can go on a long hot streak. They shot 11-for-15 while outscoring Detroit, 30-21. Small forward Al Thornton scored 12 of his 19 points during the quarter.
"We hardly hit any threes the whole game, so the best thing we could do was take it to the hole every single time," said Eric Gordon, who had 14 points and four assists in his second game back after missing eight with a sore groin. "We had a lot of isolations and then we just mixed it up a little bit. Al made a lot of individual plays for himself and Kaman did, too."
Detroit's offense was hindered by injuries. Ben Gordon, the team's leading scorer, joined Tayshaun Prince and Richard Hamilton on the sidelines.
Gordon sprained his left ankle in a 98-88 loss to Cleveland Wednesday.
Prince (back) and Hamilton (ankle) have barely played this season.
The Pistons hung around until the late going behind offensive rebounding and career bests from two rookies. They had an 18-4 advantage in second-chance points and attempted 28 more shots than the Clippers.
Jonas Jerebko scored 22 points, 12 more than his previous best, and Austin Daye added a season-high 13 points while making his first start. Daye replaced Gordon in the lineup.
That wasn't enough to offset the poor outings by Charlie Villanueva and current sixth man Will Bynum, who shot a combined 9-for-32.
"Any time you have those guys you're counting on shooting that type of percentage," head coach John Kuester said, "it's going to hurt your chances."
What hurt even more was that 35-year-old Ben Wallace could not play the entire game. When Wallace came out for a breather late in the third quarter, Detroit's interior defense completely collapsed.
Clippers forward Craig Smith assisted on three baskets, all dunks or layups, while Wallace rested in the opening minutes of the fourth.
"We've got some guys that can post up and we did a good job of getting them there," Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy said. "We took advantage of it. When we got in the open court, we were able to get some easy buckets on the fast break."
After Wallace returned, Thornton hit two jumpers against Jerebko, who was saddled with five fouls, to give the Clippers a 90-87 lead. Marcus Camby, who had six blocks to spearhead the Clippers' defense, followed with a three-point play and the Pistons never caught up.
"In the second half, they were the aggressors and we weren't," Kuester said. "We've got to become a team that is more aggressive. Their interior passing was far superior to ours."
The Clippers' last win against the Pistons was a 74-72 victory at Staples Center on Nov. 3, 2002. Their most recent win at The Palace was a 111-106 overtime triumph on Feb. 19. 2001, when Wallace was playing his first season with Detroit.
Kaman, who attended Central Michigan, took special pleasure in breaking the hex.
"It's great to win here," he said. "I've never won here before. We'll take it any way we can."
The Pistons need a win any way they can get one but they play Eastern Conference leader Atlanta Sunday afternoon. It's unlikely their injured players will be available.
"We have a great group of guys," Kuester said. "It just would be nice to see them all together at one time. We're going to be fine before it's all over."
