Magic-Hawks Preview

The Orlando Magic won the Southeast Division by 12 games last season, never really needing to worry about their lead after the beginning of January.

The Atlanta Hawks think they'll stick around much longer this time.

The Hawks have the best record in the Eastern Conference through the season's first month, and they'll get their first crack at the defending conference champions on Thanksgiving night at Philips Arena.

Orlando (11-4) held a 3 1/2-game lead over Atlanta on Jan. 1, but the Hawks couldn't get any closer as the Magic cruised to the Southeast title on their way to the NBA finals.

Atlanta (11-3) appears to have a bit more staying power this season, boasting the conference's only unbeaten home record (7-0), an average victory margin (6.6) bested only by Boston and the fewest turnovers (12.5 per game) in the league.

The Hawks' seven-game overall winning streak came to an end Saturday with a 96-88 loss at New Orleans, as Atlanta shot a season-low 37.2 percent and played the final three-and-a-half quarters without Mike Bibby, who left with a sprained left ankle.

"Bibby's our quarterback," forward Marvin Williams told the NBA's official Web site. "It's tough when your general goes down like that."

Bibby is a game-time decision for the Hawks' first meeting with Orlando - a nationally televised contest Atlanta is using as a measuring stick. A win would give the franchise its first 8-0 start at home since beginning the 1993-94 season 9-0.

"It's a big test for us," center Zaza Pachulia told the Hawks' official Web site. "If we want to be a winning team these are the teams that you've got to beat. Earlier this season we beat Boston in Boston. This is the same category team and same kind of category game."

Orlando looked like it would be a half-game ahead of Atlanta in the Southeast, but fell one-half game behind the Hawks after a late collapse Wednesday.

The Magic led Miami by seven with 6:40 to play in the fourth quarter, but Dwyane Wade went on a personal 12-0 run and Michael Beasley's follow of a Wade miss with 1.6 seconds left lifted the Heat to a 99-98 win.

"It's over with now. There's nothing we can do about it," Magic center Dwight Howard said. "... We just have to go back out there tomorrow and play better basketball."

While Bibby, who shot 30.4 percent as Atlanta lost three of four to Orlando last season, is questionable for Thursday, the Magic know they'll be without point guard Jameer Nelson for at least another month as he recovers from left knee surgery.

Based on Jason Williams' last two games filling in, Orlando should be in solid shape at the point. Williams, back in the NBA after temporarily retiring last season, has averaged 20.5 points on 66.7 percent shooting in the last two contests.

Williams and the Magic may want to get Howard more involved in the offense to be successful. The Atlanta native took just five shots in the loss to the Heat, dropping Orlando to 2-3 in games he's taken five shots or fewer.

The Magic are 9-1 when Howard scores 14 points or more.

Howard scored at least 16 in all four meetings with Atlanta last season, and he was especially impressive in his hometown. The reigning defensive player of the year averaged 22.0 points and 21.0 rebounds in two Orlando wins at Philips Arena.

Atlanta's Joe Johnson averaged 15.0 points on 30.6 percent shooting in the three losses to the Magic.

Voila! Orlando, Howard Reappear in Second Half of 93-76 Win

ATLANTA (NBA.com exclusive) -- On Thanksgiving night in Atlanta the Orlando Magic came out and played more like Halloween.

Fortunately for the Magic, the treat came in the second half.

"In the first half, our starting lineup looked like they didn't even want to play, but our backups kept us in the game," said Magic coach Stan Van Gundy. "When I put our starters back in the game they went through six minutes of sleep-walking. I had to ask them at the half, 'Does anybody actually want to play?'"

Van Gundy found plenty of takers in the second half, as the Magic stormed back from a 12-point halftime deficit and beat the Atlanta Hawks, 93-76, in front of a sellout crowd at Philips Arena.

The win gave the Magic a 12-4 record (they now sport identical 6-2 records at home and on the road) and a big bounce-back win following Wednesday night's disappointing loss to MIami. The Hawks (11-4), who lost for the first time in eight home games, have their first losing streak of the season and are 0-1 in their new alternate red uniforms.

Dwight Howard led the way with 22 points and 17 rebounds, and stepped up to lead the charge.

"[Van Gundy] came in and just challenged me to play better," said Howard, who scored 16 points in the second half, 10 of them coming in the decisive third quarter. "I came out in the second half, trusted my teammates. They made some open shots and I tried to dominate the paint."

That he did, and so did the Magic, who recorded 21 second-chance points, and 12 of them in the second half.

Vince Carter added 21 and Anthony Johnson came off the bench to haunt his former team, adding 17 and three assists.

Johnson scored 15 second-half points and was instrumental in a 15-6 run to start the fourth quarter that expanded Orlando's lead from two at the start of the period to 11 with just under six minutes to play.

The former Hawk, who played parts of four seasons in Atlanta, was responsible for 12 straight points in the run, assisting on two straight possessions then scoring eight points on the next three.

"Dwight started dominating, winning one-on-one moves so once he got it going they decided to double team," said the 12-year veteran, who shot 6-for-10, 3-for-5 from three. "When they double-teamed, we worked the ball around. I'm the least-likely guy you want shooting the ball. That being said, the ball will find you. I was just able to knock down some shots."

"He wasn't mad about not playing in the last few games," said Howard of Johnson. "He just came out tonight and did his job. This team is not worried about points and who has the most minutes. Just winning."

The win was the Magic's fourth straight at Philips Arena, their fourth in a row over two seasons against the Hawks and gave them a half-game lead in the Southeast Division.

For a while it looked like the home team would be doing the celebrating. But the reversal of fortune came with a reversal of styles, as the Hawks, who led 51-39 at the half, became spectators in the second half.

"The first half, we got to the bucket and got easy baskets," said Joe Johnson, who scored 22 for the Hawks. "The second half we just didn't attack.

"They went on a run and we never bounced back from it," he added. "Tonight, playing against one of the top teams in the East, we showed no signs of urgency in that second half."

The Magic outscored the Hawks 54-25 in the second half, after allowing 25 points in the first quarter and 26 in the second and out-rebounded the Hawks 53-41, 34-16 in the second half.

"The big thing was on the defensive end," said Van Gundy. "Our defense was good. We were all over the glass. It was really won on the defensive end of the court."

Atlanta was winning that battle early, closing the first half on a 16-3 run and taking advantage of poor outside shooting by the Magic. Orlando shot only 4-for-17 from behind the arc in the first half, failing to take advantage of the Hawks' strategy of doubling down on Howard.

For right now, Orlando's best offense may be a good defense. That's something Van Gundy can live with.

"Our offense is still not very good right now and we need some work," he said. "I know if we continue to make that kind of defensive effort we'll buy ourselves time to become a good offensive team and I have confidence that we will become one."
