Greg Oden is playing some of the best basketball of his career, and the Portland Trail Blazers have benefited with a pair of easy wins.

The Blazers' recent dominance should continue Wednesday night at home against the winless New Jersey Nets, who are closing in on a dubious NBA mark.

Oden tied a career high with 24 points and matched his season best with 12 rebounds in Monday night's 122-98 rout of Chicago. Over the past three games, the top overall selection in the 2007 draft has averaged 18.7 points and made 20 of 25 shots (80.0 percent).

The 7-footer averaged 8.9 points as a rookie and 9.5 points in the first 13 games this season.

"I'm not saying my game is where it should be, but when I can get good deep post position and overpower people and get good shots up, I definitely want to use my strength," Oden said.

The 122 points against the Bulls were a season high for the Blazers (11-5), who have won five straight at home. That performance followed a 106-78 victory over Minnesota.

With help from its 21-year-old center, Portland has shot 53.6 percent and committed 20 total turnovers in its back-to-back wins. In their first 14 games, the Blazers averaged 15.4 turnovers and shot 44.3 percent.

"Our turnovers have gone down, and both of our units have played well," coach Nate McMillan said. "The first group played well then the second group came in and continued that consistency we've talked about on both ends of the floor."

The Nets are playing consistently poorly, and they dropped to 0-14 with Tuesday night's 101-87 defeat at Denver.

New Jersey is three losses shy of matching the worst start in league history. Miami opened its inaugural season 0-17 in 1988-89, and the Los Angeles Clippers tied that mark in 1998-99.

"It's your choice what you're going to focus on," coach Lawrence Frank said. "What we choose to focus on is just today - get better today. ... The future - who knows? But right now, we know we have today and we're just going to focus on that."

The Nets, averaging a league-worst 85.1 points, shot 38.9 percent to start a four-game trip and allowed 100 points for the first time in nine games.

"Nobody likes to lose, especially at this rate," guard Devin Harris said. "We've just got to dig deep and find it within ourselves to come out with a better effort."

Despite being hobbled by a strained groin, Harris scored a season-high 19 points in his second game back from injury, and Rafer Alston rebounded from his shooting slump with 19 of his own.

Alston was 7 of 14 on Tuesday after making four of his previous 29 attempts. Chris Douglas-Roberts, however, was 1 of 6 after averaging 27.3 points on 48.4 percent shooting in the three previous games.

Harris led the Nets in scoring in both of last season's meetings with the Blazers, but Portland's Brandon Roy had a combined 60 points while leading his team to a season sweep.

Portland is searching for its fourth straight win over New Jersey and is 29-5 all-time against the Nets at home.

Despite solid effort, losing streak continues for Nets

PORTLAND, Ore. (NBA.com exclusive) -- The New Jersey Nets were better Wednesday night, but their run at the NBA record for futility is still on.

The Nets kept it close for three quarters, before the Portland Trail Blazers pulled away for a 93-83 victory at the Rose Garden.

It was the 15th straight loss for New Jersey, two shy of the league mark for consecutive defeats at the start of a season.

The Nets didn't take the loss lightly.

"You walk into that locker room and it's like a morgue, because they are laying it all out there," New Jersey coach Lawrence Frank said. "It's disheartening to lose, but if we put efforts like this together, we'll break through."

Portland's depth -- among the best in the league -- paid off and precision 3-point shooting offset a rare off night at the foul line as the Blazers (12-5) won their third straight and remained in a virtual tie with Denver (11-4) atop the Northwest Division.

"We weren't overlooking them," said Portland center Joel Przybilla, who led the Blazers with 10 rebounds in his 18 minutes. "We were confident if we played Blazer basketball, we could get it done.

"We kept after them. A lot of these games in the fourth quarter, we're outworking teams. Teams get tired, because we come with so many weapons."

Nobody was bigger off the Portland bench than Rudy Fernandez, who connected on 4-for-5 3-pointers, including a pair with the shot clock about to expire in the second half.

"Rudy's pretty good at knocking down threes with the shot clock running down," said Portland point guard Andre Miller, who also played a key role off the bench with 10 points, six assists and no turnovers in 26 minutes.

"It's kind of like a dagger, because you played really good defense for 23 seconds," Portland's Brandon Roy said. "Those were really big threes for us tonight."

The Blazers survived despite a big effort from New Jersey center Brook Lopez, who worked Przybilla and Greg Oden inside for a career-high 32 points along with 14 rebounds in 40 minutes.

"Brook was tremendous," Frank said. "He asserted himself. His moves were straight-line moves."

"One of the most skillful centers in the league," Portland coach Nate McMillan said of Lopez. "He was scoring from everywhere. He has a big body. He's on the block, he's patient and he gets to the rim. He's a tough matchup."

Oden was good, too, with 18 points, eight boards and four blocks in 25 minutes. But he was no match for Lopez.

"He's going to be an All-Star before very long," Przybilla said of New Jersey's second-year center.

"He's very strong," Oden said. "He has big, heavy legs and is very hard to move. He has a really good touch around the basket. He's tough to guard, but we got the victory."

New Jersey did a solid defensive job on the Blazers' top two scorers, Roy and LaMarcus Aldridge. Trenton Hassell, in particular, was effective in neutralizing Roy, who had 13 points and five assists. Aldridge made only 4-for-13 shots and finished with 12 points and eight rebounds.

"We did a pretty good job with Roy, a pretty good job in our paint defense," Frank said. "But their threes, and a couple of those bench guys, were the difference."

McMillan liked the fact six Blazers scored in double figures, led by Oden's 18.

"We need other guys to make shots and play off of those guys," McMillan said. "Most nights, Brandon and LaMarcus are getting double-teamed. When you get those shots, you have to take them. When we knock them down, we're a tough team to guard."

Portland led 49-44 at the half. Midway through the third, it was knotted 54-54 before a Przybilla dunk started an 8-0 run for the Blazers. The lead juiced to 16 early in the fourth, but the Nets never quit battling.

"We need to take the good from it and learn from the bad," Lopez said. "We were right there in the end. We just weren't able to respond to the last run of the game."

Though the Nets were the ones playing the second of back-to-back games after a loss at Denver on Tuesday night, "we looked like we had heavy legs," McMillan said.

"That third quarter, we looked like we were in slow motion," added McMillan.

"We missed our free throws, but in the fourth quarter, we had some guys who had some legs. We were able to have a 31-point fourth quarter. We did what we needed to do to get through this game."
