Mavericks-Rockets Preview

In their last game, the Dallas Mavericks faded late against a team that was playing extremely short-handed.

That doesn't bode well for their next contest against the well-rested Houston Rockets.

The Mavericks look to avoid suffering back-to-back losses for the first time this season Wednesday when they visit the Rockets, who haven't played since Saturday.

Dallas (10-4) saw its five-game winning streak snapped in a 111-103 loss to Golden State on Tuesday. The Warriors used only six players due to injuries, but it was the Mavericks - who hadn't played since Friday - who were the ones who struggled to close the game out. They led 98-89 but got outscored 22-5 the rest of the way.

The Mavericks were missing three starters themselves - forwards Shawn Marion (left ankle sprain) and Josh Howard (left ankle surgery) and center Erick Dampier (illness). Quinton Ross started for Dallas but sat out the second half with a tight lower back.

"We're down three starters, but everybody has to deal with injuries,'' said Dirk Nowitzki, who had a team-high 28 points and 10 rebounds. "They kept pushing and we didn't have enough left down the stretch.''

The 111 points were the most allowed by Dallas this season in a game that didn't go to overtime.

Nowitzki is averaging 30.3 points and 9.5 rebounds in his last four games. He had 23 points and six boards Nov. 10, when the Mavericks rallied from a 17-point deficit to beat the Rockets 121-103 in Dallas. Erick Dampier had 20 rebounds to help the Mavericks beat Houston for the 13th time in the last 17 meetings between the intrastate rivals.

While the Mavericks try to avoid their first consecutive losses, Houston (8-6) is looking to win back-to-back games for the first time since a three-game winning streak Oct. 28-Nov. 2. The Rockets have alternated losses with wins for 10 consecutive games since then.

"These are the types of games we need to win if we're going to build on what we've done," coach Rick Adelman told the team's official Web site. "We haven't been able to do that."

The Rockets will be taking the court for the first time since a 113-106 home win over Sacramento on Saturday.

Luis Scola finished with 22 points while Kyle Lowry added 20 to help Houston once again avoid its first back-to-back losses of the season. The Rockets won despite shooting 3 of 18 from 3-point range and allowing the Kings to shoot 50.6 percent overall.

Scola is averaging 17.0 points in his last seven games. He had 12 against the Mavericks earlier this month.

Rockets star Tracy McGrady returned to practice Monday for the first time since undergoing microfracture surgery on his knee in February, but there is no known timetable for his return to game action.

Tuesday's game began a stretch of four games in five nights for Dallas, which will travel to Indiana and Cleveland this weekend.

Mavs bounce back with huge win over Rockets

HOUSTON (NBA.com exclusive) -- The Dallas Mavericks, fresh off an embarrassing loss, weren't about to let it happen again.

The Mavs shrugged off a hot start by the Houston Rockets and rolled to a 130-99 victory before 18,157 at Toyota Center. One day after getting ambushed by the short-handed Warriors, Dallas rallied past Houston, breezing to its biggest margin of victory this season.

"Tonight is what makes this league fantastic," said Dallas coach Rick Carlisle. "Our guys bounced back well. Our tempo was perfect."

Perfect certainly is the best way to put it.

Trailing 17-4 just over four minutes into the game, the Mavericks dropped a stunning 32-8 run on the Rockets over the next eight-plus minutes to seize control and silence what had been a frenzied sellout crowd.

Even more stunning was the fact that the bulk of that run consisted of a 26-0 assault that turned a 25-13 deficit into a 39-25 lead in the opening minute of the second period. Yes, you read that correctly -- a 26-0 run.

"I wasn't really aware of it," said Dirk Nowitzki, who finished with 25 points. "I just heard about it afterwards. Obviously I knew we were doing well, moving the ball offensively, getting stops and pushing the ball out. I think that once we get into transition, we're pretty good. We can get guys running and not have to grind it out. We knew we were doing well, but I had no idea we had almost a 30-0 run."

During that incredible stretch, the Mavericks were 10-for-11 from the floor, mixing fast-break layups with floor-stretching 3-pointers.

"I don't know if I've ever seen [a 26-0 run]," Carlisle said. "But it's not even [about] the numbers -- it's just how we're playing. It's the process by which we're playing. When the activity is there, we're moving the ball, screening and helping each other, we're a different team."

They certainly were a different team from the crew that showed up the night before to take on the Warriors. In that one, the Mavericks appeared to have the game in hand, but the Warriors, utilizing only six players, closed with strong run to pull out an improbable victory.

The Mavericks apparently were paying attention.

Even without injured center Erick Dampier, who had a 20-rebound game in their first meeting with the Rockets (a 121-103 Dallas victory on Nov. 10), the Mavericks were able to make the necessary adjustments to counter Houston's every move.

"We let them score any way that they wanted to," said Rockets forward Luis Scola, who had 15 points. "They played completely free and exactly the way they wanted to play. Everything that they wanted to do, they did."

It was a stark contrast from the previous night, when the Warriors hit Dallas with a 22-5 closing run to pull out an eight-point win.

"That's the NBA," said Mavericks guard Jason Kidd, who dished out seven assists to move past Mark Jackson into second place (10,337) on the career assists leaders, behind only John Stockton (15,806). "Things can change like that. The game is fragile. We played terrible [Tuesday] night, and we all knew that. We were very fortunate to have a game tonight so we could bounce right back."

The Rockets, who emphasize playing to their few strengths -- frantic defense, ball movement and non-stop running -- met a Dallas team that is capable of taking full advantage of their weaknesses.

Minus a shotblocker to defend the rim, the Mavericks attacked the basket for layups and putbacks, accounting for 54 points in the paint. And when the Rockets attempted to help inside, the Mavs rotated the ball out to shooters like Jason Terry (27 points) and Tim Thomas (23 points, four 3-pointers), who drilled one uncontested jumper after another.

"I don't know what happened," said Houston coach Rick Adelman. "Sometimes you need to get hit in the jaw to wake yourself up, and I hope that's what happens."

Dallas shot 65.5 percent (55-for-84), with only one player, Rodrigue Beaubois, shooting under 50 percent (3-for-7). The Mavericks handed out 33 assists, led by Terry's 10 and nine from J.J. Barea and added 14 steals.

"We have guys on the bench that have been around and know how to play the game," Thomas said. "It's been 13 years in the league, but I still know how to play basketball."

The Rockets were led by Carl Landry's 24 points, with Trevor Ariza adding 20. But Aaron Brooks was limited to nine points and only seven shots by the Mavericks' aggressive defense.

"It's disappointing," said Rockets forward Shane Battier. "They came in here and did what good teams do. They punish the teams that aren't ready to play and don't play as a cohesive unit. They did it, and they kept doing it to us the rest of the night."
