Nuggets-Clippers Preview

Poor play away from the Pepsi Center has been holding the Denver Nuggets back somewhat. Perhaps a road contest with the Los Angeles Clippers will give them a boost.

Following two more successful home games, the Nuggets travel to Los Angeles looking to extend a seven-game winning streak against the struggling Clippers on Friday night.

A 4-0 record at the Pepsi Center has helped put Denver (8-3) in a tie for first place with Portland in the Northwest Division. After beating the Lakers 105-79 there last Friday, the Nuggets continued their home dominance four days later with a 130-112 victory over Toronto.

Denver, though, has lost three of its last four on the road, averaging 95.0 points - 6.4 below its season average - during that span.

The Nuggets have three road wins over the Clippers (4-9) during their seven straight victories in the series. Denver has beaten Los Angeles by an average of 11.4 points since a 101-90 road loss Nov. 21, 2007.

Carmelo Anthony, who scored a combined 66 points in his last two road games versus the Clippers, had a big game against the Raptors despite suffering from a severe headache. Anthony woke up with his first migraine in a couple of years, but had 32 points and five assists in 30 minutes.

The All-Star forward once struggled with migraines all the time, but it had been a while since he had one.

"That's why it was weird to all of a sudden wake up with one," he said. "All I can do is sleep. You've just got to sleep it away."

Anthony is averaging 29.9 points, topping 30 in seven of 11 games.

J.R. Smith has been effective in coming off the bench to help Anthony carry the scoring load. Smith has settled in nicely after being suspended for the first seven contests after pleading guilty to reckless driving over the summer, averaging 22.3 points in his last three games.

Los Angeles may be without second-year guard Eric Gordon, who missed a 106-91 loss to Memphis on Wednesday night due to a strained groin. The Clippers fell to 1-8 when Gordon doesn't play.

Gordon, averaging 18.9 points and 1.7 steals, is day to day.

When healthy, Gordon teams with Baron Davis to give the Clippers a formidable backcourt. Davis shot 8 for 13 and finished with 23 points versus the Grizzlies, although he turned the ball over four times.

"At times, we get out of sync offensively," Davis said. "Next thing you know, a two-point game is a 10-point game. ... You can't play like that. ... You have to stay close, and you have to be able to get stops and get rebounds."

Davis is five assists shy of 5,000 for his career. He's averaging 7.2 assists as he continues to feed the ball to center Chris Kaman, who is averaging 21.5 points, 8.6 rebounds and 1.5 blocks.

"I just try to come out and help my team win," Kaman said. "I have been getting pretty good looks at the basket and my teammates are finding me. ... I just try to keep playing and do my job."

Butler's big game off the bench leads Clippers past Nuggets

LOS ANGELES (NBA.com exclusive) -- Where did that come from?

With a coach that's rumored to be on the hot seat, two of their best players sidelined with injuries and even the team's broadcast crew suspended for a game, the Los Angeles Clippers pushed all the distractions aside Friday night and shocked the Denver Nuggets with a 106-99 victory at Staples Center.

The victory ended a seven-game losing streak against the Nuggets and helped silence an impatient crowd that had filled the arena with boos during the Clippers' three-game home losing streak.

"This was a big win for us," said Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy.

"They're probably the second best team in the West."

Denver (8-4) came into the game having not played since a 130-112 victory Tuesday against the Toronto Raptors and still glowing from its 26-point victory over the defending NBA champion Lakers the Friday before.

The Nuggets looked as though they'd stroll right past the Clippers before flying home to play the Bulls on Saturday night, jumping out to a 26-14 lead late in the first quarter behind 17 points from Carmelo Anthony.

However, a funny thing happened on the way to the blowout. The Clippers suddenly awakened and scored the final seven points of the first quarter. The reserves then took over at the start of the second and extended the run to 19-0.

"We have to somehow realize that we are everybody's big game," said Denver guard Chauncey Billups. "It's not like a few years ago where you play the Clippers or somebody and it is just another game."

The Nuggets managed to trim the lead to 10 at the half, but the second quarter still proved to be the highest-scoring (35 points) and best shooting (70 percent) quarter of the season for the Clippers. A big reason was the play of the Los Angeles bench, which scored 38 of the Clippers' 56 first-half points.

"Tremendous job for us," Dunleavy said of his bench.

After shooting 66.7 percent in the third quarter to extend their lead to as much as 19, the Clippers settled for a 15-point advantage heading into the fourth.

The final period had been rough on the Clippers in their previous two home games, getting outscored by a combined score of 47-25 and blowing leads each time. They appeared headed for another meltdown as the Nuggets scored 17 of the quarter's first 21 points to cut the deficit to two points with 6:09 remaining.

The Clippers bowed their backs, however, and strung together one of the biggest three-possession streaks of the season. Rasual Butler, who finished with a season-high 27 points off the bench, sank a 3-pointer, Marcus Camby blocked Anthony's shot on the other end and Baron Davis hit a another 3-pointer to push the margin back to nine points. The Nuggets never came closer than five the rest of the way.

"It got a little scary down the stretch," Camby said. "You just had that sense that something wasn't right out there, but tonight we were able to weather the storm and come out with a win."

Al Thornton scored 18 points for the Clippers and did as well a job as could be expected guarding Anthony, the league's second-leading scorer who finished with 37 points. Chris Kaman, the Clippers' leading scorer, had a season-low 13 points and Baron Davis contributed 12 points and nine assists.

The biggest breakout performance belonged to Butler, the offseason acquisition who had been a combined 9-for-34 from the field in the last three home games, but shot 8-for-15 against the Nuggets.

"I just tried to put those last few games behind me," said Butler, who was replaced by Ricky Davis in the starting lineup Friday night.

"I was thinking a lot, I was being a little indecisive, but my teammates and coaches have the ultimate confidence in my ability."

Nene had 18 points and 12 rebounds for the Nuggets, Kenyon Martin added 14 points and Ty Lawson contributed 12 points off the bench.

J.R. Smith, who came in averaging 18 points a game, was limited to nine on 4-for-13 shooting.

"It's a very tough loss, but the good thing about the NBA is we get another game tomorrow," Billups said. "We have to forget about this game and focus on tomorrow night."
