Suns-Hornets Preview

The Phoenix Suns didn't catch any breaks with a road-heavy schedule to start the season, but they get a big opportunity Thursday night when they visit the New Orleans Hornets, who are without All-Star guard Chris Paul.

Phoenix (10-2) plays 15 of its first 22 games on the road, but that hasn't stopped it from building the best record in the Western Conference. The Suns are the first team to reach 10 wins, half of them coming after they trailed in the fourth quarter.

"We've been good in the fourth quarter so far this season," coach Alvin Gentry said.

A comeback wasn't needed when the Suns won 124-104 over the Hornets (4-8) last Wednesday. Phoenix shot a season-high 55.4 percent and posted its highest point total of the season.

That contest proved to be the last for Hornets coach Byron Scott, who was fired the next day with general manager Jeff Bower taking over.

Things went poorly in Bower's first game Friday, when Paul went down with a left ankle injury in an 86-78 loss to Portland. Paul remains out indefinitely.

The superstar guard helped New Orleans win six of its last eight against Phoenix, averaging 26.8 points and 11.4 assists in those matchups - with Suns guard Steve Nash having trouble keeping up with a player 11 years younger then him. Nash, though, averaged 19.3 points and 10.7 assists in that span versus the Hornets.

Nash is the NBA assist leader with 11.9 per game and had 16 in a 111-105 victory at Houston on Tuesday. He had a season-low two baskets, but helped the Suns rally from another fourth-quarter deficit.

"We've got a little toughness," Nash said. "We're not physically the toughest group, but mentally we're tough. We started to battle at the end of the game and we got a lot of stops."

Amare Stoudemire scored 23 points and Jason Richardson 20 for Phoenix, which improved to a West-leading 6-2 on the road.

Bower earned his first win as Hornets coach Tuesday, 110-102 over the Clippers. David West scored 24 points and rookie Darren Collison, making his second straight start in place of Paul, added 12 and six assists.

"It made me feel good," Bower said. "They gave great effort and it was a pretty good night for us."

Shooting guard Devin Brown broke out of a slump with 16 points. Brown averaged 6.3 on 24.0 percent (6 of 25) shooting in his last three games.

"After everything that we put into it yesterday, it was great to come out and reward ourselves with a victory," Brown said. "I think guys felt a lot better after that practice. I think it showed tonight because we were able to move the ball around and we were knocking shots down."

Hornets show growth with win over conference-leading Suns

NEW ORLEANS -- Whether they wanted to admit it or not, the New Orleans Hornets needed more than a win over the Los Angeles Clippers to legitimize the re-organizational jumble.

They may have found that signature win Thursday night with Chris Paul in a suit and David West having an off-game and riddled with foul trouble.

New coach Jeff Bower now has win No. 2, and it's a biggie as the Hornets shot their way past the Western Conference-leading Phoenix Suns 110-103 at the New Orleans Arena. It gives New Orleans its first win streak of the season.

The Hornets relied on the hot hand of Peja Stojakovic from 3-point land and some aggressive play from the role players under then-coach Byron Scott to take down what was the NBA's hottest team.

Stojakovic credited the Hornets ball-movement for his pinpoint accuracy from 3-point range as he went 7-for-11 from beyond the arc leading to his game-high 25 points. He wasn't the only one hitting from 3-point range as the Hornets shot 52 percent as a team.

"I think it was an effort game for us," said Stojakovic, who had a game-high 13 rebounds. "A great team game on both ends of the floor. David (West) got into foul trouble and that put us in a tough position because he's such a big part of our team. We turned the ball over a lot in the first quarter. ... I think we did a good job as the game went on. We stuck together."

Stojakovic also admitted he had a bit of a hot hand as well.

"I think it was just in the flow," Stojakovic said.

The Hornets also got a boost from second-round pick Marcus Thornton, who seems to be growing more comfortable as a scorer in increased minutes. Bower appears to recognize that as Thornton appears to have the green light to shoot at will, finishing the night with 19 points on 7-for-12 shooting.

Thornton did limp off the floor with 9:35 left in the game after injuring his ankle, but it didn't appear serious as he came back to the bench without much of a hobble.

Devin Brown stepped up for the second consecutive game as he also scored 19 points and dished out five assists.

First-round pick Darren Collison displayed his mettle despite a poor shooting night when he made a driving layup with 38 seconds remaining to maintain the much-needed edge late against the Suns. Collison ended with 15 points, five assists and only one turnover.

"His decision making, his ability to create shots for other players both interior and on the perimeter (was excellent)," Bower said. "These situations are somewhat new to him at this level, but obviously, he is used to making decisions in end-of-game scenarios in his college days. This is just a little bigger stage."

West picked up two quick fouls in the first quarter and another two fouls in less than two minutes into the second half to spend much of the game on the bench. He also only shot 2-for-11 for just six points.

The Hornets made do anyway.

New Orleans outrebounded Phoenix 11-0 to open the game and the trend continued from there. For the second consecutive game the Hornets won the boards battle by a wide margin as they dominated the Suns 56-38 in that category.

Suns coach Alvin Gentry knew Phoenix would see a different Hornets team from the last time they met Nov. 11 as it was Scott's last game as New Orleans' coach.

"(The Hornets) were embarrassed by the way they performed at our place," Gentry said. "You knew they were going to play better here. No doubt in my mind. Chris Paul or no Chris Paul, it doesn't matter."

Seven Suns finished in double figures led by Amar'e Stoudemire's 23 points, but the Hornets were able to keep pace as they shot the ball well at the onset.

New Orleans went cold in the third quarter, allowing the Suns' unrelenting pace and quick passing to bring the Western Conference leader back and lead by as many as eight points. But the Hornets bounced back, taking the lead for good on a Stojakovic three-pointer with 2:49 remaining in the game.

"These are pretty tough-minded guys. ... We've got to be able to deal with it to get it turned around," Bower said.

The Hornets may be starting to do just that.
