Warriors-Celtics Preview

The Boston Celtics don't seem overly concerned about their first rough stretch of the season.

The Celtics look to avoid a third consecutive loss when they host the undermanned Golden State Warriors on Wednesday night.

Since opening the season with six straight wins, Boston (8-3) has dropped three of five and is trying to get back on track after its first back-to-back losses of the season. The Celtics fell 97-86 to Atlanta on Friday before losing 113-104 at Indiana on Saturday.

The latest setback showed signs that Boston might be losing some of its composure.

Ray Allen had 24 points and a hobbled Paul Pierce added 15, but the Celtics were slapped with three technical fouls and allowed the Pacers to shoot 52.6 percent while giving up their highest point total of the season.

Boston matched its season-low point total in the loss to Atlanta.

"I wouldn't call it slippage," forward Kevin Garnett told the Celtics' official Web site. "Slippage is when you stop being disciplined; you stop being consistent with what you started with, and I don't think we're (doing) that."

Boston needs a healthy Pierce, who's averaging a team-leading 18.4 points but has been bothered by a knee injury. He expects to be ready for this contest despite shooting 4 of 10 from the field and struggling to keep up on the defensive end at Indiana.

"I obviously hurt us,'' Pierce said. "I was a step slow all night and it really hurts. I'm really going to take that one on the chin right there.''

Pierce is averaging 24.7 points in 19 career games against the Warriors.

Allen is averaging 26.9 points in his last 13 games against the Warriors, but was held to seven in the teams' last meeting, a 99-89 Golden State victory on Dec. 26.

Though the teams split the two-game season series in 2008-09, Boston has won consecutive games and five of six at home over Golden State.

The Warriors (3-7) will also try to avoid a third straight defeat after losing 114-108 at Cleveland on Tuesday to fall to 1-3 on a five-game road trip.

Playing its first game since trading the disgruntled Stephen Jackson and Acie Law to Charlotte for Raja Bell and Vladimir Radmanovic on Monday, Golden State had seven healthy bodies Tuesday.

"I don't know what you can do,'' Golden State coach Don Nelson said. "Just play and see what happens. Full roster or not, it was going to be a tough go coming into these next two games. We realized that.''

Monta Ellis scored 23 points, Corey Maggette had 19 with 11 rebounds and Radmanovic added 11 points as the Warriors remained competitive despite being short-handed.

Bell, who averaged 12.0 points in five games for the Bobcats, likely won't play before undergoing wrist surgery next week that could sidelined him up to five months.

The Warriors are also without forward Kelenna Azubuike, lost to a season-ending knee injury, and guard C.J. Watson (swine flu).

Ellis has paced the Warriors, averaging 19.7 points on the season and 23.7 on 49.2 percent shooting in his last three contests. He has totaled 47 points in his last two games versus Boston.

Maggette is averaging 21.8 points in his last four games for Golden State, which is averaging a NBA-leading 111.2 points per game but allowing a league-worst 113.7 per contest.

Maggette had 32 points in a 119-111 loss at Boston on Nov. 26.

Celtics overpower outmanned Warriors in second half

BOSTON (NBA.com exclusive) -- Eight-player rotations are generally reserved for that late-season push, but for the injury-riddled Golden State Warriors, eight was almost enough to hand the Boston Celtics their third consecutive loss.

Except almost only lasted until the third period, one which few teams escape unscathed at TD Garden.

Preying on the Warriors' lack of size and bodies, the Boston Celtics worked their way inside for 48 points in the paint and ran off a 12-0 stretch in the third to notch their ninth victory, 109-95, Wednesday night.

"We were right there the whole game," Warriors coach Don Nelson said, "but just didn't play in the third quarter."

With the Warriors hardly putting any size on the floor, the Celtics went to Kendrick Perkins early and often. With little resistance offered, Perkins posited himself deep in the paint, either earning close shots or forcing the Warriors to put him on the line. By halftime, he had 12 points.

"That was the focus of the game," Paul Pierce said. "Trying to get the ball inside knowing how small they were."

But even as they executed the gameplan, the Celtics looked slow to the ball, allowing the Warriors to shoot 50 percent from the field as they took a mere one-point lead into halftime. Boston looked no better than the team that lost back-to-back games last weekend to Atlanta and Indiana. Fortunately for them, someone spoke up at halftime.

"We had one of those conversations every team has," Kevin Garnett said. "The Captain (Pierce) here sort of pulled everybody together and just talked to us about what we needed to do to go out in the second half.

"I thought we followed his lead."

None did more than Rajon Rondo.

With the game tied at the 8:49 mark of the third, the Celtics proceeded to hold the Warriors scoreless for the next four minutes, riding an aggressive Rajon Rondo to a 13-point lead at the end of the quarter.

"He was terrific in the second half," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. "He came out in the third quarter and played with unbelievable speed and energy. They couldn't stay in front of him."

Rondo had his most complete game in recent memory, rebounding from two early fouls to tie his season-high with 18 points -- 12 in the third, nine in the paint -- along with seven boards and 12 assists. And once he opened the floodgates, Boston's shooters finished things off.

After back-to-back triples from Eddie House and Rasheed Wallace in the opening minutes of the fourth, the Warriors were going to need something that's been quite rare for them -- defense -- to even consider a comeback.

Because for once, they couldn't count on their, for lack of a better word, weird offense.

"This team is very unorthodox, very unusual style," Garnett said. "Nellieball is something different. It's always been effective when it worked."

Though they are surprisingly efficient on offense given their lack of true distributors and big bodies, Golden State was stifled once it reached the quarter that has doomed them as much as it has saved the Celtics.

"Very few games have we come out in the third quarter like we do at the beginning of the game," Nelson said.

The Celtics, on the other hand, have been one of the best third-quarter teams over the last two years, posting a second-best +2.4 scoring margin in 2008, and a +3.9 this season through 11 games, good for sixth in the league.

Raja Bell, who is scheduled to have season-ending wrist surgery, played 23 minutes for the depleted Warriors in what should be his only appearance for the team this year.

"Because we're down to seven guys, he offered to go ahead and play," Don Nelson said. "He's going to leave us tomorrow to go have surgery."

Rivers mentioned after the game that even had the Celtics won their back-to-back last weekend, they still would have had plenty of work to do. The opposite was true tonight, with the Celtics looking more reminiscent of the San Antonio Spurs teams that have built momentum throughout season's past than of recent hot-start Boston squads.

"We did hold a great offensive team under 100," Rivers said. "But we're still a better team [than this]."
