Suns-Rockets Preview

Behind their high-scoring, up-tempo offense, the Phoenix Suns have gotten off to a hot start. The Houston Rockets are showing they have no problem speeding up their offense as well.

The Suns look to become the first NBA team to 10 wins Tuesday night when they host the Rockets.

Phoenix (9-2), which led the league in scoring last season, is off to another impressive start offensively. The Suns are the only team in the league to score 100 points in every game this season, and though they missed the playoffs last season, they enter Tuesday with the Western Conference's best record.

Phoenix, which is averaging 110.4 points, is coming off a 101-100 win over Toronto on Sunday, bouncing back after suffering a 19-point loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday. Steve Nash was fouled while making a game-tying layup with 38.9 seconds remaining, then hit his free throw for the final score.

"We struggled a little bit offensively," Nash, who finished with 23 points and nine assists, told the Suns' official Web site. "There were a bunch of in-and-outs on shots I normally make. I can say the same for our team, in general. We weren't flying offensively tonight, but luckily we found the strength to make the stops down the stretch."

The Suns shot 50.8 percent in their first nine games but are shooting 40.1 percent in the last two. While Sunday wasn't their best game offensively, Amare Stoudemire scored a season-high 30 points on 10-of-15 shooting. He went 2 of 15 against the Lakers to finish with a season-low eight points.

While much of the attention has been on their offense, the Suns were also pleased with their defensive effort against the Raptors. Phoenix had given up 113.3 points in the previous three games and it allowed 33 points in the opening quarter before settling down over the next three periods.

"A good win for us against a quality team," coach Alvin Gentry said. "They present so many problems for you. I thought after the first quarter we were going to have to score 120 points to win."

Gentry will need another good effort from his team Tuesday as Houston (6-4) has averaged 105.2 points since scoring 87 in a season-opening loss at Portland.

The Rockets haven't won as consistently as the Suns, but they beat the defending champion Lakers 101-91 on the road Sunday. Houston handed the Lakers their third loss of the season, holding them to 38.1 percent shooting and outrebounding them 60-38.

Aaron Brooks led all scorers with 33 points while Trevor Ariza, a former Laker who received his NBA championship ring before the victory, was held to nine points on 2-of-12 shooting.

"I knew tonight was going to be a tough night for me," Ariza said. "I didn't play as well, but my teammates played great. Aaron played big for us, and I'm just happy we got a win."

Ariza, who has spent most of his career coming off the bench, has embraced his starting role with the Rockets, whose top scorers from last season - Tracy McGrady and Yao Ming - are both injured. Ariza is averaging 18.4 points, more than double his previous career high.

With Ariza's help, Houston has scored 100 points or more in nine straight games, the club's longest streak since a 12-game run during the 1995-96 season.

Despite being one of the lower-scoring teams in the NBA with 98.4 points per game last season, Houston averaged 106.3 while winning two of three against Phoenix. The Suns scored 102.7 points per game in the series.

Defense -- yes, defense -- lifts Suns over Rockets

HOUSTON (NBA.com exclusive) -- The Rockets have been one of the league's better stories this season, devoting themselves to run-and-gun basketball after losing superstars Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady to injuries, and forward Ron Artest to free agency.

That plan of attack has usually been good enough to present problems for opponents. But on Tuesday night, the Rockets ran into the Phoenix Suns, who not only are the undisputed masters of end-to-end action, but a pretty good story themselves after an offseason of retooling has led to a white-hot start.

But the story on this night was how the Suns were able to give the young whippersnappers from Houston a lesson or two not only about how to get the ball out and run, but also how to play a little defense, rallying from a 15-point first-half deficit to run off with a 111-105 victory before a crowd of 16,396 at Toyota Center.

And while their offense gets plenty of attention, the Suns won this game by clamping down on down the Rockets in the final minutes. Scrambling on their rotations and pounding the boards, the Suns limited the Rockets to 32 percent shooting in the fourth quarter (9-for-28).

The Suns also had four of their nine blocks in the fourth, outscoring the Rockets 33-23 to become the league's first 10-win team.

"We've been pretty good [defensively] in the fourth quarter," said Suns coach Alvin Gentry. "If you look at the stats, I think we've been holding teams to 43 percent shooting in the fourth quarter. Tonight, I just thought we did a good job of taking away some of their driving lanes and such."

It was the fifth time this season that the Suns were able to overcome a double-digit deficit and pull out a win.

"I think we have a little toughness," said Nash, who finished with 12 points (despite only 2-for-10 shooting) and 16 assists. "Physically, we're not the toughest group, but mentally we're tough. We battle. We weren't battling early, and we saw what happened."

What happened was the Rockets, led by Aaron Brooks (16 points, 13 assists) and Trevor Ariza (19 points), blew out to a 49-34 lead midway through the second quarter. But the Rockets were unable to slam the door, allowing the Suns to creep back to within 55-52 at the half.

"We were up big, by 15, but we let them back in the game," Ariza said. "And then they executed better than us down the stretch."

Did they ever.

The game was tied at 98-98 when the Suns started to do what they do best, work the offense.

Nash found Jason Richardson for a layup, the last of his 20 points, and then got a backbreaking play from Channing Frye, a 3-pointer from the top of the key as the shot clock was about to expire, to put the Suns up 103-98 with 1:49 to play.

"That was big," said Gentry of Frye's shot. "We're still trying to get him [Frye] in a situation where he's shooting without thinking. He's still going through a little bit of a transition, but he's getting much better at it. He has the ability to space the floor for us, which opens up lanes for Steve."

After the Rockets got a free throw from Carl Landry, who had a career-high 27 points (13-for-18 shooting) and added nine rebounds, the Suns got a muscle layup from Jarron Collins for a 105-99 lead with just over a minute remaining.

"We had some guys in foul trouble, so I knew I had to be ready to contribute," said Collins, who scored all six of his points in the fourth. "You have to be ready, no matter what. When I'm on the bench, I try to stay into the game and mentally ready.

"Sometimes that's not the easiest thing to do, but I really do pride myself on being a professional and ready to go in. When I'm called upon, I just go out there and try to give my team a lift."

Actually, it was another game in which the Suns got lifts from just about everyone, whether it was 23 points from Amar'e Stoudemire, shooting over and around the Rockets' pint-sized front line, or 34 points and 15 rebounds from the bench players.

"That's been a great characteristic of our team this year -- we've had some really solid efforts from a lot of people," Nash said. "I think we have a lot of resiliency and depth, and that's the key to a lot of our wins."

The Rockets are still finding their identity.

The Rockets were feeling pretty good about themselves, heading back home after knocking off the Lakers in Los Angeles. But after all the back-slapping following the win over the Lakers, Tuesday's loss was a cold slap of reality for the still-learning Rockets.

"This is a youth loss, I think," said Houston forward Shane Battier. "We are still in the emerging stages, trying to figure out what's good for us, especially down the stretch. That's something that we are going to have to go through. We have to look at this game and learn from our mistakes in the fourth quarter and grow."
