Mavericks-Bucks Preview

There was a good chance the Milwaukee Bucks would struggle without Michael Redd in the lineup. Rookie Brandon Jennings has prevented that from happening.

Coming off a club-record performance, Jennings looks to help lead the Bucks to a fifth consecutive victory Monday night when they host the Dallas Mavericks.

In his seventh NBA game, the 20-year-old point guard scored 55 points and shot 21 of 34 in 40 minutes of a 129-125 win over Golden State on Saturday night.

The point total broke the franchise's previous rookie record mark of 51 set by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar - then known as Lew Alcindor - on Feb. 21, 1970. Jennings fell three points shy of Wilt Chamberlain's NBA rookie record set in 1960.

It was also the most points scored by a rookie since Earl Monroe's 56 in 1968, and the second-most ever by a player under the age of 21. LeBron James scored 56 points in March 2005.

"It was a very, very impressive performance for anyone, let alone a rookie in his seventh game,'' Milwaukee coach Scott Skiles said of Jennings, who did not score in the first quarter. "We just gave the ball to Brandon and let him go to work.''

That's just what Skiles has had to do with the 10th overall pick who skipped college to play professionally in Italy last season, especially after star scorer Redd suffered a knee injury in the second game of the season. Redd could return as early as Monday or possibly Wednesday against New Jersey, but Skiles may need to keep putting the ball in Jennings' hands even after that happens.

Jennings, averaging 25.6 points on the season, has scored a combined 87 in his last two games while shooting 32 of 53 from the floor. Thanks largely to their rookie's heroics, the Bucks are 4-1 in the games Redd has missed.

Jennings credits Skiles with giving him a chance to produce so quickly in his career.

"For him to give me the opportunity to go out there and showcase my talent, I think that's real big of him, especially because I'm just a rookie,'' Jennings said. "A lot of coaches don't give rookies a lot of chances.''

As the Bucks (5-2) try to win five in a row for the first time since Nov. 14-24, 2007, Jennings is ready to look forward.

"(Saturday) night, that's the past,'' he said.

Off to its best start since winning five of the first seven during its last playoff season of 2005-06, Milwaukee now tries for a third consecutive home win over Dallas (7-3).

That likely won't be easy against a Mavericks team that has won two in a row to improve to 2-1 on a four-game road trip after beating Detroit 95-90 on Sunday.

Dirk Nowitzki scored 25 points and Drew Gooden added 11 with 11 rebounds in place of starting center Erick Dampier, who was scratched due to illness. The Mavericks shot 43.9 percent, but outscored the Pistons 46-36 in the paint.

"Sometimes, things don't go the way you draw them up and you have to grind a game out,'' Dallas forward Shawn Marion said.

Nowitzki is averaging 25.7 points on the season and 27.1 in his last 14 games against the Bucks. He had 30 in Dallas' 133-99 loss at Milwaukee on Jan. 21, but 14 in a 116-96 home win over the Bucks on Feb. 25.

Averaging just 5.7 points and 4.3 boards, Gooden will likely get another start with Dampier expected to miss this contest.

Nowitzki 'lucky' bounce gives Mavs the win over Bucks

MILWAUKEE (NBA.com exclusive) - -- Dirk Nowitzki thought his game-winning shot might never come down.

"When it left my hand, I thought it was going straight in," Nowitzki said after his 18-foot turnaround jumper at the overtime buzzer had given the Dallas Mavericks a 115-113 victory over the scrappy Milwaukee Bucks and rookie sensation Brandon Jennings.

The ball didn't go straight in. Instead, it hit off the back iron, caromed off the front rim and then kissed gently off the glass. When gravity's effect had taken, the ball settled softy through the hoop, barely rippling the net.

"The bounce was obviously lucky," Nowitzki said. "When it bounced up it seemed like it's up there forever. But we got a lucky bounce and we definitely needed it."

Nowitzki's 31st and 32nd points of the night gave the 8-3 Mavericks their third straight victory and sent them home with a spiffy 3-1 road trip.

But the Mavericks knew they had been in a back-alley brawl. That was probably the last thing they expected early in the third quarter.

Jennings led the Bucks with 25 points, eight assists and seven rebounds but missed a shot near the end of regulation and a 3-pointer with four seconds left in overtime before Nowitzki's game-winner. The Bucks (5-3) had a four-game winning streak snapped.

Jason Kidd had 17 assists and 10 rebounds for Dallas, missing a triple-double by one point.

Dallas shot the lights out in the first half, building a 66-54 lead on 67.6% shooting (25 for 37).

When the Mavericks made four of their first five in the third quarter and pushed the lead to 74-56 with 9:22 left, their accuracy rate was up to 69%.

At that point, Bucks coach Scott Skiles had seen enough. Out came starters Jennings, Charlie Bell, Carlos Delfino, Hakim Warrick and Andrew Bogut. In came Luke Ridnour, Ersan Ilyasova, Dan Gadzuric, Luc Richard Mbah a Moute and rookie Jodie Meeks.

"That's our second game in a row where there was very little defensive intensity, very little will to stop the other team at all," Skiles said. "We paid for it by getting way behind. We went to the bench and some guys came in with some energy. We started scrapping around and playing a little bit and gave ourselves a chance."

Ridnour (17 points) hit three 3-pointers and Ilyasova (19 points, 12 rebounds) added two. On the defensive end, the Bucks held Dallas to just 27.3% (9 for 33) shooting over the final 21-plus minutes of regulation.

Jennings was the only starter to return in the quarter, and when he made his second three of the night with 1.8 seconds in the quarter, the Bucks had cut it to 85-82 to enter the fourth.

"That was a good move," Dallas coach Rick Carlisle said of Skiles' wholesale lineup change. "The threes were raining in in the third quarter like I've never seen before. We had to fight that off and keep plugging away."

A layup and four free throws by Jason Terry (19 off the bench) pushed Dallas' lead back to 91-83. But a tip by Ridnour, another three by Ilyasova and two 3-pointers and a runner in the lane by Jennings pulled Milwaukee into a 98-98 tie. After two Nowitzki free throws, Ilyasova's fourth 3-pointer of the night gave the Bucks their first lead since 4-3.

A tip-in by Drew Gooden (22 points, 14 rebounds) gave Dallas a 102-101 edge, but Jennings made one of two free throws with 1:10 left, then made a running 6-footer with 45.6 seconds left to give the Bucks a 104-102 lead.

Terry's tough 13-footer with a hand in his face with 32.2 seconds left tied it again, and Ridnour and Jennings both missed in the final seconds to send the game to overtime.

Nowitzki's 3-pointer gave Dallas a 111-108 lead with 1:55 left in the extra period, but a jumper and one of two free throws by Ilyasova and two more free throws by Mbah a Moute gave Milwaukee a 113-111 edge with 37.9 seconds left.

That's when Gooden showed again, tipping in Nowitzki's finger roll that slipped off the right side with 27 seconds left.

The Bucks put the ball in Jennings hands, but Dallas ran rookie Rodrigue Beaubois and any big man who happened to be in the area at him. When Jennings had to force up a 3-pointer from deep on the left side, Beaubois got a piece of it and Gooden rebounded and called time with 3.5 seconds left.

After Milwaukee took a foul on the first inbound, Kidd got the inbound pass to Nowitzki at the left elbow of the lane. He faked toward the middle and turned back to the outside. His fader barely cleared Mbah a Moute's outstretched arm and took its fortunate trip to rim, glass and net.

"They were draped all over him," Carlisle said. "He just hit a better, more-difficult shot. That's what great players do."

INJURY NOTES: The Mavericks were without starting center Eric Dampier, who fell ill and was hospitalized before the Mavericks' Sunday night game in Detroit. Carlisle said before Monday's game that Dampier was "symptom-free" but would not elaborate further. Dampier flew to Milwaukee Monday night and joined the Mavericks for their flight home.

Dallas forward Shawn Marion left Monday's game with a sprained left ankle. He suffered the injury in the opening minute but played into the second quarter before leaving for good.
