Stephen Jackson has openly talked about his desire to be traded to a contending team, but a day before the Golden State Warriors opened their 2009-10 season, the outspoken swingman was saying all the right things.

Jackson and the Warriors look to bounce back from a disappointing 2008-09 campaign and a summer of discontent when they host the Houston Rockets on Wednesday night.

"This is the first camp in the last four years that I didn't miss a practice," Jackson said Tuesday. "My body feels great, I'm stronger than ever.

"I'm excited ... I know I don't have to make every play down court. I have Monta (Ellis) and (Stephen) Curry down there to do most of the ball handling, so all I have to do is score and play defense. And I would rather have that than making plays, scoring and having to defend. It's more energy for me."

Jackson, however, wasn't this energetic about the upcoming season - or even staying with the team - during the summer. In a magazine article published in August, Jackson voiced his frustrations with the organization that signed him to a three-year, $28 million extension in November.

"It's just things are in the air right now," said Jackson, who averaged 20.7 points, 5.1 rebounds and 6.5 assists last season. "I really can't get too much into it right now, but I'm just looking to go somewhere where I can go and win a championship.''

Jackson was fined $25,000 by the NBA for those remarks and suspended for two exhibition games for "conduct detrimental to the team" after leaving the bench and not returning during a 110-91 win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Oct. 9.

"In my 30-some-odd years in coaching, I never suspended a player before,'' said the Warriors' Don Nelson, who two weeks ago accepted Jackson's offer to surrender his role as team captain. "Maybe I should have a couple of times, but I never have. I try to stay away from doing anything costing players a lot of money."

Ellis lost approximately $3 million last season after team president Robert Rowell suspended him 30 games for violating his contract. Ellis signed a six-year, $66 million deal in July 2008, but after severely spraining his ankle in a moped accident in August, he initially lied to the team by explaining the injury was suffered in a pickup game.

Ellis, who missed 57 games last season, voiced his concern during media day about the Warriors selecting Curry seventh overall in this summer's draft.

"I can't envision that,'' Ellis said of playing in an undersized backcourt with Curry, who is also 6-foot-3. "Us together, no. I can't. I just can't. I just can't. They say we can, but we can't. I just want to win, and we're not going to win that way.''

Nelson, though, has squashed any speculation that Curry, who led the nation with 28.6 points per game last season while with Davidson, will be traded.

Prior to the draft, the Warriors parted ways with Jamal Crawford, who was dealt to Atlanta for Speedy Claxton and Acie Law. Golden State also re-signed C.J. Watson and acquired veteran Devean George during the offseason to bolster the backcourt.

Corey Maggette is back from offseason wrist surgery, but the Warriors will be without third-year forward Brandan Wright for several weeks after he underwent surgery earlier this month to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder.

Despite playing with a sore back during the preseason, second-year forward Anthony Randolph looks to stay in the lineup after averaging 10.6 points and 8.5 rebounds in 22 starts last season.

Second-year swingman Anthony Morrow also makes a push for more playing time after averaging 17.5 points on 50.4 percent shooting in the Warriors' final 11 games last season.

Andris Biedrins, who averaged 11.9 points and 11.2 rebounds in 62 games last season, could be joined by Ronny Turiaf in the starting frontcourt if Nelson goes with a bigger lineup.

Golden State, which has lost six straight to Houston, faces an undersized Rockets team that was forced to start 6-foot-6 Chuck Hayes at center in Tuesday's season-opening 96-87 loss at Portland.

With Yao Ming sidelined until next season following foot surgery and Ron Artest signing with the Los Angeles Lakers in the offseason, Houston was outrebounded 51-33 and had 12 shots blocked.

The Rockets benefited from 26 Portland turnovers, but they shot 37.0 percent from the field.

"We had a pretty good combination out there (during a 21-9 fourth-quarter run) that attacked them a little bit,'' coach Rick Adelman said. "But they really helped us by turning it over like they did.''

Aaron Brooks had 19 points to lead Houston, but he missed all six 3-point attempts. In Houston's last visit to Oracle Arena, Brooks hit three 3s and scored 20 points in a 113-109 victory on April 10.

Trevor Ariza hit two 3-pointers and scored 12 points in his Rockets debut Tuesday. Playing for the Lakers, Ariza averaged 14.5 points and 5.8 boards against Golden State last season.

Ariza auditions for go-to role in Rockets' win

OAKLAND, Calif. (NBA.com exclusive) -- Houston Rockets coach Rick Adelman earlier Wednesday evening lamented the fact that he was seeking a go-to scorer for his offensively-challenged team.

He may have found one by the end of the night.

Rockets newcomer Trevor Ariza scored 25 points to give Houston its first victory of the season, a surprising 108-107 defeat of the Golden State Warriors before a sellout crowd at Oracle Arena.

Houston secured the victory and Golden State earned its fourth straight home-opening loss when Anthony Morrow missed a 3-pointer in the final seconds. Rookie Stephen Curry laid back the rebound but it did not matter.

The Rockets overcame a variety of obstacles to improve their record to 1-1, including a scenic ferry ride to get to the game.

The Rockets, who had lost in Portland on Tuesday night when they shot only 37 percent, were staying in San Francisco. But the Bay Bridge, which connects San Francisco and Oakland, was unexpectedly shut down for repairs, leaving the Rockets to seek public transportation to the game.

That was the least of Adelman's concerns, however. What he was sweating was who was going to score with both Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady sidelined with injuries and Ron Artest now playing for the Los Angeles Lakers.

Artest was essentially replaced by Ariza, a key defensive cog on the Lakers' championship squad who signed with Houston in free agency. But just because Ariza was bestowed $33 million did not necessarily mean he was ready to carry his own team in the absence of Yao and McGrady.

In fact, when Adelman was asked before the game who he considered his primary scorer, he reluctantly said it was probably point guard Aaron Brooks because of his playoff experience last season; that, of course, discounts the fact that Ariza played an additional two series in the postseason last year en route to a memorable title run.

Ariza was only 3-for-8 and scored 12 points in Houston's loss to Portland the night before, and Adelman worried about who was going to become the team's No. 1 scorer -- and everything that comes along with it.

"Right now we are asking role players to step in and (lead the team)," Adelman said. "It's not a comfortable thing for a guy to do those things. I don't think people really understand how tough it is to do that night after night. It's a big responsibility."

From the beginning on Wednesday, Ariza was aggressive, launching 3-pointers, getting to the basket and pulling up for jump shots. Granted, a Don Nelson-coached team is never in danger of being used as a video for defensive fundamentals; but Ariza, known more for his lockdown ability with Los Angeles, still was able to exploit the Warriors, coming up one point shy of his career high.

"I think he took it upon himself to come out that way, and he was that way the entire game," Adelman said.

While Ariza controlled most of the game, power forward Luis Scola offered up 21 points, including 17 in the second half, enabling Houston to erase Golden State's 10-point halftime lead in a matter of minutes.

That comeback seemed to be sparked by an alteration in the rotation by Nelson.

Highly touted second-year forward Anthony Randolph did not even get into the game until 3:08 left in first half, a stark condemnation of his preseason play given all the hype surrounding what was supposed to be a breakout season.

But he hustled for those final three minutes, and ended it with a buzzer-beating 3-pointer that provoked the double-digit lead.

Nelson rewarded Randolph by starting him in the second half instead of Andris Biedrins, but the decision proved costly. Scola got off early and often, Golden State's lead dissipated and the momentum shifted in Houston's favor for good.

"I guess that's why I hate home openers," said Nelson, 24 victories from becoming the league's all-time winningest coach. "My complaint of the game was my team, when we came out in the second half, we just didn't have very much going. We are going to have to play a lot better than we played tonight."

A subplot of the game was how disgruntled Warriors forward Stephen Jackson would be received by the home crowd after creating havoc with the organization for the past few months.

Over the summer, Jackson was involved in a number of confrontations: he asked for a trade, was fined by the league, restated his desires, got into a verbal jousting match with Nelson, was fined by the team again, relinquished his captain's title, and has criticized his teammates.

Not surprisingly, he was greeted with a lusty round of boos and jeers.

He said he didn't care.

"I expected it. Fans are so predictable about that," Jackson said. "Any time you say you want to leave, that is going to happen. I was prepared for that. They can do it all they want. I am going to go out there and play hard for the fans who do support me."
