Magic-Hawks: Play |
"Every game is a big game for us," said Nelson, who handed out six assists. "We have to take it one game at a time, play hard and see what we can make out of this."
"Dwight was huge for on the glass and also offensively," Magic Coach Brian Hill said. "But it was another good team win. We got contributions from a lot of guys. We're still alive."
Howard, who recorded his 56th double-double this season, also collected a career-high six assists. DeShawn Stevenson added 14 points for the Magic, who won their 10th straight home game.
"We're playing good at home," said Stevenson, who made 7-of-12 shots, including all four in the decisive final period. "We feel comfortable. We're out there playing together. ... playing as team. Whenever we do that we put ourselves in a good situation to win."
Hedo Turkoglu added 16 points and five assists for Orlando, which held a 78-65 lead after three quarters.
The Hawks used a 9-0 run to cut the deficit to 83-78 with 6:35 remaining. However, the Magic responded with a 16-2 surge over the next five minutes, capped Howard's three-point play with 1:39 left for a 99-80 bulge.
"That was a five-minute spurt," Atlanta coach Mike Woodson said. "When you're on the road you just can't have spurts like that. That was the game."
"You have to take your hat off to those guys," said Atlanta forward Al Harrington, who had 19 points and eight rebounds. "They played hard and protected their home floor. Every time we cut it close, they would come on and get the exact shot they wanted. They executed well and that was the difference tonight."
Darko Milicic tied a season-high with 13 points and Keyon Dooling added 10 for the Orlando, who had six players in double figures and shot better than 50 percent (53) as a team for the ninth time in their last 10 games.
Josh Childress scored 13 points and Joe Johnson added 12 for Atlanta (24-53), who also had six players in double-figures, but connected on just 14-of-37 shots in the second half.
"We're taking it game by game," Nelson said about the Magic's slim playoff hopes. "I think that's why we're winning. We're not thinking about the playoffs or putting extra pressure on ourselves. We're just out there playing as a team."
"The playoffs are the last thing on our minds right now," Howard said. "We just want to come out, play hard, and try to win games."
