CHARLOTTE, NC, April 12 (Ticker) -- In their third attempt, the Charlotte Hornets clinched a playoff berth for the third straight year.

David Wesley scored a season-high 30 points on 13-of-18 shooting and Jamal Mashburn added 25 and a season-high 11 assists as the Hornets halted their two-game skid with a 112-100 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

After failing to secure a postseason spot Tuesday at Toronto or Wednesday vs. Atlanta, Charlotte (42-37) opened a three-game lead over ninth-place Indiana with three games to play. The Hornets hold the tiebreaker edge.

"I'm not excited that I got 30 points, but more that I hit two shots in a row. I haven't been shooting the ball well lately," Wesley said. "I got my adrenaline going and knocked some shots down. I didn't think about my shot, it just felt good."

Baron Davis scored 20 points on 8-of-10 shooting and added eight assists as the Hornets won for the third time in four meetings with the Cavaliers this season. Charlotte has won seven consecutive home contests from Cleveland dating to the 1998-99 season.

"We've been striving to reach this point all season," Hornets coach Paul Silas said. "Baron led the charge tonight. He hits threes early. He was focused. He was penetrating and kicking the ball out."

Reserve Trajan Langdon scored 16 of his season-high 24 points in the second quarter for the Cavaliers, whose three-game winning streak came to an end.

The Hornets shot nearly 58 percent (44-of-75) from the field.

"It's hard to stop a team when they're shooting so good," Cavaliers guard Ricky Davis said. "They seem to hit all of their shots. Every 3-pointer they hit took energy out of us. Every time we doubled and rotated, they hit open shots."

The Hornets led, 72-66, with 3:44 to go in the third quarter when momentum swung their way. Off a miss by teammate Wesley Person, Cavaliers forward Tyrone Hill clearly was pushed in the back by Wesley. When the officials called a loose-ball foul on Hill, the 12-year veteran exploded.

Hill was ejected after being hit with a pair of technical fouls for his persistent badgering of the officials. Cavaliers coach John Lucas also received a technical foul for his protests.

"They gave me a technical for coming on the court," Lucas said. "That goes from a six-point game to an (11)-point game, and that was the game. We were down by too much. Then, although we cut it to seven, we never could get up to the top of the hill."

Mashburn converted three free throws and Wesley hit a pair from the line as the Hornets opened a 77-66 cushion. The Cavaliers never pulled within seven thereafter.

"Clinching the playoff berth is all a part of the winning games," Mashburn said. "We still have a lot of work ahead of us and we still have to realize that even though you clinch, (it) doesn't mean that you have won the whole thing. You still have to stay focused and prepare yourself to win the next game."

Cleveland trailed by six after the first quarter, but Langdon made a layup in the opening minute of the second to slice the deficit to 24-22.
