2013-14 record: 50-32
Third place, Southwest Division
Lost in first round to Oklahoma City Thunder
2014 Draft Picks: Round 1 - Pick 22
TRADE 1: Memphis Grizzlies acquire No. 35 pick Jarnell Stokes from Utah in exchange for a 2015 second-round pick.
Areas of strength
Grit and grind. Rugged, tough inside play. Seeing Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol take it to opposing teams must have been what it was like to watch dinosaurs battle their enemies in prehistoric tar pits. In this era of point guardsflitting around and everybody filling up the nets and the scoreboards with 3-pointers, it’s a joy to watch the throwback Grizzlies do it the old-fashioned way in the paint.
Having praised the inside game, there is a need for balance in the Memphis attack. They still rank last in shots attempted and made from behind the arc. With Tayshaun Prince running on fumes and Tony Allen always challenged from the perimeter, the Grizzlies need a wing shooter.
Two stats that matter
30 -- Some things never change. The Grizzlies again ranked, dead last in 3-point shooting.
89.9 -- The Grizzlies rank at the bottom of the NBA in pace of play and must find a way to speed things up for easy buckets.
The way to go
Z-Bo is owed $16.5 million on the last year of his contract, and there is speculation that the team might be ready to move on. It seems there’s always speculation with Z-Bo. But when Gasol came back from knee injury, the Grizzlies finished the season strong and gave OKC a test in the first round. It makes sense to keep Randolph at least through the February trade deadline. The glaring hole is still out on the wing, where the Grizzlies need a scorer. Eric Bledsoe could be a nice fit.
