L.A. Lakers Team Overview

2011-12 record: 41-25

First place, Pacific Division

Lost in conference semifinals to Oklahoma City

DRAFT PICKS:

Round: 2

Draft Trade:
Lakers acquire Pick No. 55, Darius Johnson-Odom, from Mavericks for cash considerations

Areas of Strength:
Kobe and big-men bookends. While it has been proven for two years in a row that Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol do not form the powerful duo many opponents have long claimed provide a huge advantage, the Lakers do have uncommonly talented running mates at center and power forward. Until further notice, of course (because a trade is possible), Bynum and Gasol are strengths.

Needs Work:
See above. Gasol is the primary trade candidate heading into what general manager Mitch Kupchak has said will be an offseason of change. Bynum likely does not meet the same fate, but needs to improve his approach to the game. All part of the bigger problem of the frontcourt as an area of need, with lack of depth a primary source of concern.

Two Stats That Matter:
1 -- Combined victories in the West semifinals after consecutive trips in 2011 and '12.

37.7 percent and 3.6 assists -- Ramon Sessions in his first trip to the playoffs.

The Way To Go:
Barring a trade, the Lakers have only the No. 60 pick, so there is no Way To Go in the Draft. They need to find dependable forwards somewhere, though, as starters and/or backups, and a center to play behind Bynum.
