*Very good athleticism to NBA standards
*Intense, active and runs the floor well
*Aggressive attacking the rim
*Ball handling is excellent for his size
*Can play both forward positions
*Still not a reliable shooter
*Free throw shooting needs improvement
*Needs to improve overall defense
Shengelia will likely be a mid-second round pick. He’ll be a good selection for a team that doesn’t need an instant contributor while he keeps getting better in Europe. Defensive liability and outside shooting are the target points. He can play in the NBA due to his athleticism, rebounding expertise and position flexibility.
Shengelia was the best player by far while competing for the Republic of Georgia at the Division “B” 2011 European Championships. He led the event in scoring at 29.9 per game and was second in rebounding with 12.0 per game. He put up decent numbers for minutes played in both the Belgian league and in the Euroleague as his game continues to improve.
8.9 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 1.1 apg, 1.1 spg, 18.4 mpg, .470 FG, .303 3PtFG, .616 FT (Belgium)
7.6 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 0.8 apg, 0.3 spg, 18.0 mpg, .468 FG, .313 3PtFG, .667 FT (Euroleague)
Reminds me of:
Andres Nocioni, a flexible forward with solid rebounding skills
What Insiders say:
Luka Bassin, International Scout and Coach
'An NBA prospect for sure; could become excellent role player due to his size, energy and physical attributes at the SF position. He is fearless and fits in NBA style of play.'
Chad Ford, ESPN
“A long, active forward who plays hard and has solid athleticism for a European prospect. He's a very good rebounder, but isn't a great offensive player at the moment. He averaged a very solid 7.6 ppg in the Euroleague this year. A potential second round prospect.”
Chris Denker, NetScouts Basketball
“The NBA alaways has room for someone with Shengelia’s motor, effort, and rebounding skills. If he can develop offensively he can have a solid NBA career.”
Danny Mills, Assistant Coach, UPEA Orlandia Basket
"Standing 6'9" with a good wingspan and a strong well built upper body the Georgian native really jumped onto the radar last summer leading his country to win the B division of the U20 European Championships, averaging 30 points and 12 rebounds per game. Is an above average athlete and runs the floor playing above the rim extremely well. Has a great motor and with his strength he finds ways to score and help his team win. Will need to continue to extend his game out more to the perimeter and develop a more consistent outside shot but has all the physical tools to be able to play both the SF/PF at the NBA level. Could be a possible late second round pick for a team who has time to be patient with him in Europe and bring into their team after a few years."
