Prospect Profile

Nikola Mirotic

  • Full Name: Nikola Mirotic
  • Position: Forward
  • Height/Weight: 6-10 / 220
  • Birthdate: February 14, 1991
  • College: Real Madrid (Spain)
Houston Rockets Round 1: Pick 23

** Traded to Minnesota on Draft night

Strengths:

   * Good length with 7-1 wingspan
   * Highly efficient shooter with very good range beyond the International 3
   * Excellent FT shooter
   * Outstanding efficiency rating guy, helps his team in many ways

Weaknesses:

   * Needs physical strength and could add some weight to his frame
   * Good agility and feet but lacks elite-level athleticism and explosiveness
   * Needs to become a better defender and consistent rebounder

NBA projection:
Has mid-first round potential, due to contract and youth, stay in Europe for a couple more years, make a lot of money, then come to NBA...much like Luis Scola or Tiago Splitter did.

2010-11 season:
Has begun to play more and more key minutes on one of the top teams in Europe, and the team has improved along with that adjustment. He has played for Ettore Messina, one of the great coaches in the world, until Messina surprisingly stepped down in mid season.

Key statistics:
2010-11 Real Madrid – Spain ACB: 15 mpg, 8.4 ppg, 3.8 rpg. FG 59%, 3PT 48%, FT 89%
 Real Madrid – Euroleague: 14 mpg, 7.4 ppg, 3.2 rpg. FG 61%, 3PT 45%, FT 86%

Cool statistic:
Nikola has played many great games since then, but he has not done anything even close to what he did in January 6th, 2009. Mirotic destroyed the stats sheet in the NIJT Hospitalet game against FMP with his monster numbers: 35 points, 23 rebounds, 9 steals, 6 blocks, 9/9 from the field, 1/1 threes and 14/14 free throws for an overall ranking of 84.

Reminds me of:
Jorge Garbajosa. Poor man's Dirk Nowitzki (obviously there will not be another Dirk, but similar styles).

What the Experts Say:
Carlos Suarez (Real Madrid player)

"It's clear, easy to see. He has a lot of talent and hunger as well as a room to improve. He's seizing his opportunity with Ettore and that's good for the team, we have a new guy contributing in our rotation."

Alberto Angulo (Real Madrid Jr. Team coach)
"He has a great ability to score and rebounds well. Has to improve athletically and gain consistency. His challenge is to compete at the highest level in every game and practice".

Current contract and team:
Real Madrid, Spain (ACB) & Euroleague
Nikola signed a long term contract with Real Madrid (through 2013) and showed no rush to jump to the NBA.

Chris Denker and Carl Berman are Managing Partners of NetScouts Basketball, "The International Basketball Connection."
