Best at Each Number? Portland Lands Three on SI's List

It's easy to peg Michael Jordan as the best to ever wear the number 23 jersey or Jerry West the greatest to don 44 in NBA history, but what about the more obscure numbers that have been worn around the NBA?

Fortunately, Sports Illustrated has done the work for us, and three former Trail Blazers land on the list of greatest players at each number.

38 - Only eight players in NBA history have worn the number 38, but none more proudly than Victor Khryapa. The Russian averaged 5.3 points and 4.1 rebounds per game in two seasons as a Trail Blazer. After a short stint in Chicago, the forward has gone on to an illustrious career in his home nation, earning the VTB United League Most Valuable Player and the Euroleague Best Defender awards in 2010. Anthony Cook also wore number 38 in Portland during the 1995-96 season.

83 - Craig Smith is the only player to ever wear 83 in an NBA game, and did so 47 times for the Trail Blazers in the 2011-12 season. "Rhino" averaged 3.3 points per game during his time in Rip City.

88 - Four players have worn 88, including Antoine Walker in his return to Boston in 2005, but none was more productive than Nicolas Batum in seven seasons as a Trail Blazer. A versatile small forward, Batum put up averages of 11.2 points, 5.1 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game as a regular starter in Portland. Recently traded to Charlotte in exchange for Noah Vonleh and Gerald Henderson, Batum will wear number 5 next season for the Hornets.
