Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry sprains right ankle; X-rays negative

No structural damage, but there's no timetable for Curry's return

Stephen Curry suffered an apparent ankle injury during the closing seconds of the Golden State Warriors’ 125-115 victory at New Orleans on Monday night. It happened when Curry lunged to steal the ball from E’Twaun Moore, missed and then tried to stop his momentum. His right foot caught and turned awkwardly on the floor, causing him to immediately fall in pain.

The two-time Kia Most Valuable Player was subbed out on the next stoppage of play and went immediately to the locker room for treatment. After the game, he exited the locker room using crutches. Warriors public relations later told reporters that X-rays were negative and Curry is currently diagnosed with a sprained ankle. Curry will undergo an MRI on Tuesday.

ESPN.com’s Chris Haynes reported Tuesday afternoon that Curry will miss Golden State’s road game tomorrow against the Charlotte Hornets (8 p.m. ET, ESPN)

Later on Tuesday, Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports reported that while Curry’s MRI revealed no structural damage, significant swelling around the ankle has caused the Warriors to offer no timetable for Curry’s return.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski adds that Curry will be reevaluated in a couple weeks, so it could be a while before the All-Star guard is back on the court.

“I hadn’t done that one in a while,” Curry told reporters after Monday’s game. “Sprained my ankle. See how it feels tomorrow and kind of go from there. Obviously a sucky situation, but I’ll be back.

“It was a dumb play because I tried to go for a steal. And then obviously it was just a bang-bang [play]. I got caught on E’Twaun’s shoe as I went by him and couldn’t catch myself. So obviously it hurt, but wanted to kind of get back here, get ice on it and get the rehab process started as soon as possible.”

ESPN.com’s Nick Friedell reports Curry was in good spirits after the game and spent some time talking with Pelicans coach and former Warriors assistant Alvin Gentry before getting on the team bus on crutches.

“This is more on the concerned side,” Curry said, before correcting himself. “I shouldn’t say that. It’s more on the — I won’t just bounce back tomorrow morning waking up like ‘all right, I should be whatever,’ just because of swelling. But all things considered, I should — knowing I’ve been through this before on this ankle and knowing the surgical repairs from like five, six years ago are fine — I should be able to bounce back.

“Thankfully [the X-rays] came back and just got to take it one day at a time and rely on the athletic training staff out there to get me back on the court as soon as possible.”

Curry’s teammates are hopeful that their star guard will return soon, but want him to take as much time as he needs to get healthy.

“It’s not good but hopefully he’ll be all right in time,” Warriors swingman Klay Thompson said. “There’s no need to rush him back, but it’s definitely not good … He hasn’t had that [ankle] issue in years. He’ll be back and he’ll be stronger than ever. I just want him to take his time and feel 100 percent again.”

Curry remains optimistic he will be back soon, reports Mark Medina of The Mercury News.

Curry’s optimism stemmed from the negative x-rays that revealed no structural damage on a right ankle that required surgery five years ago. Curry will have more definitive answers when he takes an MRI on Tuesday in Charlotte. For now, Curry could not resist showing off his sense of humor when he shared his first thought when he rolled his right ankle.

“I had to call my Dad and tell him I can’t play golf tomorrow in Charlotte,” Curry said. “I’m just playing.”

With the Warriors often treating any injuries with caution, Curry could miss playing against the Hornets in his hometown.

“I always look forward to that trip and playing in that arena and playing in front of people that have seen me grow up,” Curry said. “I missed it [before]. So I know how to deal with the emotions. Hopefully my fans still show up and support the other guys if I’m not out there and we have a good game.”
