Houston Rockets match offer to retain Donatas Motiejunas

Donatas Motiejunas isn’t going anywhere, after all.

The Rockets decided to match the $37 million offer sheet for the seven-footer and prevent him from going to the Brooklyn Nets. The Rockets then waived guard Bobby Brown to make room for Motiejunas.

Given his back issues, he’ll have to pass a physical first, although he passed a physical with the Nets prior to signing the offer sheet. He averaged 6.2 points and 2.9 rebounds with the Rockets last season, and the team expects bigger things from him this season, which would be his first under new coach Mike D’Antoni. That’s one reason the Rockets chose to bring him back; they believe Motiejunas, who can stretch defenses with his shooting, can flourish and give James Harden yet another option on offense.

“He really knows how to play basketball, a hard worker,” said D’Antoni. “Above all, just his basketball intelligence would be great for any team; it will be great for us.”
