Ashton Hagans was born on July 8, 1999 in Cartersville, Georgia. His parents are Monica Wheeler and Marvin Hagans. Hagans has four siblings. He's the cousin of former NFL running back Ronnie Brown, as well as former NBA player Trey Thompkins. In his younger days, his little league football team won a state championship. Hagans attended Newton High School in Covington, Georgia, where he averaged 20.2 points, 7.6 assists and 3.6 steals as a senior. Hagans was named the 2018 Gatorade Georgia Player of the Year as well as Mr. Georgia Basketball. A consensus top-three point guard in the high school class of 2018, Hagans committed to play collegiately at the University of Kentucky. As a freshman at Kentucky, Hagans appeared in 37 games and made 30 starts. In 28.5 minutes per game, he posted 7.7 points, 4.3 assists and 2.6 rebounds, while shooting 46.7 percent from the field. In his sophomore seasons, Hagans bumped his scoring average up to 11.5 points per game, adding a team-high 6.4 assists and 3.9 rebounds. Hagans scored a season-high 26 points against Utah Valley on November 18. In a January matchup against Georgia, Hagans had 23 points, nine assists and four steals. He posted back-to-back double-digit assists games against UAB (Nov. 29) and Fairleigh Dickinson (Dec. 7) early in his sophomore seasons.
