Thon Marial Maker was born in 1997 in Wau, a city in northwestern South Sudan. At the age of six, his family emigrated to Australia. Maker eventually moved to the United States to play basketball. He initially played at two schools in Louisiana. Then, for high school, Maker moved to Martinsville, Virginia to attend Carlisle School HS. As a sophomore, Maker led Carlisle to a state championship and earned 2013-14 Gatorade Virginia Boys Basketball Player of the Year honors. Maker then spent two seasons in Canada at the Athlete Institute Academy in Mono, Ontario and also played for nearby Orangeville Prep. Maker is a big Arsenal soccer fan.
