MRI reveals Barea ruptured Achilles' tendon

From NBA Twitter and media reports

As the Dallas Mavericks feared, an MRI on Saturday has confirmed that veteran point guard J.J. Barea has a torn right Achilles tendon, per Shams Charania of The Athletic. And Barea, the Mavericks and doctors are still evaluating the severity.

Barea suffered the injury Friday night against the Minnesota Timberwolves, and the team confirmed the results in a Saturday release. According to the update, Barea is “currently weighing his surgical options”, and more information will be provided at a later date.

Barea landed awkwardly after a made layup late in the fourth quarter and began grabbing at his lower leg. He was helped off the court and straight to the locker room moments later.

In his postgame press conference, Mavs coach Rick Carlisle described the problem as a “right leg injury” and said Barea would have an MRI on Saturday.

Barea, 34, is averaging 10.8 points and 5.5 assists in nearly 20 minutes off the bench this season.
