Hawks, Onyeka Okongwu agree to $62 million contract extension

The No. 6 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft has agreed to an extension with Atlanta.

Atlanta Hawks center Oneyka Okongwu has agreed to a contract extension, the team announced Monday.

Per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the deal is a four-year, $62 million contract extension.

How we got here: Drafted 6th overall in 2020, Okongwu has developed into a standout defender and rebounder for Atlanta. The 6-foot-8 center averaged 9.9 points and 7.2 rebounds over 80 games last season. The deadline for him to sign a rookie-scale contract extension was 6 p.m. ET today.

Okongwu is positioned to play a key role for the Hawks this season as they look to improve in year two of the Trae Young-Dejounte Murray backcourt.
