Streaking: 1971-72 Lakers

In 1971-72, the Lakers put together the longest regular season winning streak in major professional sports history, rattling off 33 consecutive victories behind a talented roster led by Jerry West, Wilt Chamberlain and Gail Goodrich.

The streak lasted from a Nov. 5 win over Baltimore to a Jan. 9 loss at Milwaukee* at the hands of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Oscar Robertson, and L.A. would ultimately go on to win its first NBA championship in Los Angeles.
*L.A. beat the Bucks 4-2 in the Western Conference Finals.

To put the 33 straight wins into franchise perspective, the closest L.A. has gotten, all-time, is 19, which came during the 1999-2000 campaign. That season also brought a 16-game winning streak, matching one from 1990-91 for the third place spot.

The longest home winning streak for L.A. came in 1976-77, when the team didn't lose for 21 games, and if one combines the 2002-03 and 2003-04 seasons, the Lakers didn’t lose at STAPLES Center for 27 games.

The Lakers have never lost more than 10 consecutive games (1993-94), while a six-game home losing streak during the 1992-93 season is the most on the franchise's own floor.

Here's how the streak compares to those of the other professional sports:

Major League Baseball:26 - 1916 New York Giants

National Football League:23 - 2008-09 Indianapolis Colts

National Hockey League:17 - 1992-93 Pittsburgh Penguins
