Overview

Baylor Scheierman went to high school in Nebraska, earned Class B All-State honors as a junior and senior, and won a Class C1 Football Championship as a quarterback. He started his collegiate career at South Dakota State and burst onto the scene as a sophomore, posting 15.4 points, 9.2 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 1.0 steals in 35.2 minutes per game en route to All-Summit League first-team honors. As a junior, Scheierman led the Jackrabbits to a 30-5 record, averaging 16.2 points, 7.8 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1.3 steals per game. He was named the 2022 Summit League Player of the Year and was a finalist for the Lou Henson National Player of the Year award, given to the top mid-major player in Division 1. Scheierman transferred to Creighton for his senior campaign and averaged 12.8 points, 8.3 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.0 steals. He ranked 12th nationally in defensive rebounds per game (7.3) and 25th in double-doubles (13). He shot 36.4% from deep in his lone season with the Bluejays after shooting over 43% in his final two campaigns with SDSU.

Analysis

Scheierman could do it all at SDSU, but he excelled as a shooter and rebounder when he faced tougher competition at Creighton. He can shoot off the dribble and knock down open shots from anywhere on the court, while his size should allow him to easily get his quick 3-point release off at the NBA level.

Projection

Scheierman’s lefty release and shot-making ability are reminiscent of former lottery pick Luke Kennard, but at 6-foot-7, a better projection would be undrafted sharpshooter Sam Hauser, who made a splash this year after working in the G League as a rookie. The other easy comparison given the school is Doug McDermott.
