Ja Morant sits down with NBA TV after being drafted by Memphis.

Pre-Draft Analysis

Areas Of Strength
Mike Conley has done nothing but give a quality effort, leadership and solid results (though never achieving All-Star status) in his time in Memphis. He represents the veteran asset and Jaren Jackson Jr. represents the young piece for the future. They were teammates for one season, although it’s unlikely they’ll be a duo this upcoming season because Conley will likely be dealt by a team seeking a rebuild.

Needs Work
The Grizzlies are under new management and that usually means they’ve become a project. Which makes sense, because there are few assets on this team, other than Conley, Jackson and the No. 1 pick. First and foremost, the Grizzlies need a scorer, regardless of position. Right now they lack anyone who can consistently average 20 points per game.

A Stat That Matters
21 percent -- According to Second Spectrum tracking, the Grizzlies took 21 percent of their shots -- the league's highest rate -- in the last six seconds of the shot clock, when league-wide effective field goal percentage is lowest.

The Way To Go
The Grizzlies need a superstar, something they’ve lacked since the franchise moved to Memphis, someone who brings not only talent, but also sizzle and flair and bankability. The last time they drafted this high, they took Hasheem Thabeet 10 years ago (... oops). Odds are the Grizzlies will do better, and unless something strange happens, Murray State's Ja Morant seems like the automatic choice here.
