Midseason Review | Shai Gilgeous-Alexander

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s inclusion in last Friday’s MTN DEW ICE Rising Stars highlights his standing as one of the top young players in the NBA. Among teams with a winning record, he leads all rookies in minutes (25.8 per game) and ranks second in scoring (10.1 points per game).

Through 59 games, his debut season is in special company; only Larry Bird and Kyrie Irving have matched Gilgeous-Alexander’s production as a rookie in terms of points (10.1), rebounds (2.7), assists (3.0) and shooting splits (46.8% FG, 33.0% 3FG, 80.6% FT).

Here are the Top 5 Performances from Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s rookie season so far:

January 18th: 24 PTS | 5 AST | 3 REB | 3 STL | 10-10 FT

One of Gilgeous-Alexander’s best performances of his young career came against the Warriors in January. Tasked with more offensive burden with Lou Williams and Danilo Gallinari both out, Gilgeous-Alexander attacked the basket early and often, going a perfect 10-10 from the line in the process.

December 17th: 24 PTS | 2 REB | 3 AST | 9-15 FG

Gilgeous-Alexander first set his career-high of 24 points against the Trail Blazers in December, and he showed an ability to rise to the occasion against the dynamic backcourt of Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum.

February 3rd: 19 PTS | 5 REB | 3 AST | 1 STL | 2 BLK | 9-15 FG

Playing less than 50 miles from his hometown, Gilgeous-Alexander showed out against the Toronto Raptors. Playing in front of friends and family, he hit tough mid-range jumpers and used crafty finishes inside to lead all players with 19 points.

November 29th: 17 PTS | 5 REB | 4 AST | 2 STL | 2 BLK | 6-9 FG

In late November against the Kings, Gilgeous-Alexander was able to create an impact beyond his scoring; he crashed the boards, dished out a few nice assists and used his length and quick hands to disrupt the Kings on defense.

November 12th: 18 PTS | 5 REB | 3 AST | 2 STL | 1 BLK | 8-11 FG

Gilgeous-Alexander had a big game in the Clippers’ overtime win against the Warriors. He was able to score 18 points on just 11 shots against one of the best teams in the league.
