Hilltop Coffee + Kitchen was founded on a noticeable gap in the South LA community — there wasn't a space for coffee, community, and creativity. Founders Ajay Relan and Yonnie Hagos asked each other, "If not us, then who?"
Instead of waiting for someone else to answer the question, Ajay and Yonnie got to work. Met with immediate success, Ajay and Yonnie added an impressive new business partner, Issa Rae! She loved the Hilltop concept and joined Ajay and Yonnie in expanding the brand. Hilltop now has three locations — Inglewood, View Park, and Eagle Rock — bringing neighborhoods in need of a community-centric, creative space with delicious food and of course, coffee!
Hilltop is built on an ethos that Ajay and Yonnie call “The Climb.” The ethos aims to inspire customers on their personal and professional pursuits, or "Climbs," and be a destination for their creative expression, optimism, and sustenance. Hilltop's home-like environment is a place where community can flourish and an example of how Black-owned businesses build inclusivity.
Hilltop serves a selection of breakfast and lunch — including pastries, bowls, salads, sandwiches, waffles, and toasts (Hilltop Droptops). The menu also includes southern comfort favorites like beignets, grits, and a fried chicken sandwich.
