Harriet's Cheesecakes Unlimited is a family-owned and operated business. It all started when the family matriarch, Ms. Harriet, decided to combine her passion for baking with the need to support her family.
In 1983, Ms. Harriet was newly divorced and working to put five of her six children through school. She opened the doors of Harriet's Cheesecakes Unlimited and has never looked back! Family is instrumental to the businesses' success. All six of Ms. Harriet's children have supported the business over the years. Two of her children, Michael and Dawn, are head bakers at the shop. Only three people in the world know the cheesecake recipe- Ms. Harriet, Michael, and Dawn!
The shop is located in Inglewood, CA and has become a landmark in the community. Although when she first opened, Ms. Harriet felt pressure as a Black businesswoman specializing in cheesecakes. To appeal to the predominantly Black neighborhood, she created the Sweet Potato Cheesecake, which has become a must-have for the holidays. People come from all over the world to get a taste of Ms. Harriet’s cheesecakes, but Inglewood will always be home. The community has become family.
More than 60 flavors are available by the slice or as whole cakes, with an all new custom flavor for Clipper Nation — Clippers Koala Berry Cheesecake! French Vanilla is the signature flavor, and Ms. Harriet's personal favorite is Apple & Spice.
While much is a secret, Ms. Harriet is willing to share a few keys to her success. First, everything must be fresh and preservative-free. The shop is based on integrity and that is a promise to customers. Ms. Harriet says, “Fresh ingredients are key in the making of our cheesecakes, adding strawberries into our cream cheese mixture is an art, all of our flavors are not just toppings, we hand-mix every cheesecake to perfection."
