Located in Los Angeles’ historic West Adams neighborhood, Alta Adams brings new flavors to a stretch of LA that hasn’t had a vibrant food scene in years. Chefs Keith Corbin and Daniel Patterson created those flavors, which are a version of soul food that fuses California cuisine with traditional West African cuisine. Keith Corbin was born and raised in Watts, and lived in South LA’s housing projects as a child. He inherited his love of food from his Southern grandmother. Corbin would spend time with his grandmother, learning to make her soul food recipes. While there wasn’t always a lot in the kitchen, Corbin grew up in a community that always shared what was on the table.

Patterson and Corbin met in 2015, and have been working together across Southern California and the Bay Area ever since. Corbin worked his way up from construction crew to line cook to kitchen manager, defining his philosophy along the way. Corbin believes soul food spans beyond a culinary category; it’s a feeling that can be transferred through any ingredient.

And it’s that feeling that drives Alta Adams. One of the ways Alta Adams shares that feeling is by hiring people from Corbin’s hometown of Watts and from the inner city. This helps create a space for people who otherwise wouldn’t have the opportunity to see past their current situations to what their futures could look like. Alta Adams is a place that celebrates unity and inclusivity, empowers rising culinary talent, and brings the community together through food.
