The Cleveland Cavaliers announces the names of the newest class of 2024 Wall of Honor inductees. The four individuals, Terrell Brandon, Chuck Broski, Jim Chones and Mike Mitchell, helped sculpt the history of the franchise and will be inducted as members of the Cavaliers Wall of Honor Class of 2024 during a special ceremony on Sunday, March 10, at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse, when the Cavs host the Brooklyn Nets at 7:00 p.m.  &nbsp;

"The Wall of Honor stands as an enduring testament, immortalizing these four extraordinary individuals for their profound impact on Cleveland Cavaliers basketball,” said Koby Altman, Cavaliers President of Basketball Operations. “Jim, Terrell and Mike each personified excellence across different eras in our organization’s rich sports history, with undeniable contributions both on and off the court, while Chuck has been a cornerstone of this franchise since its inception, documenting all the great on-court accomplishments of our players. Their legacies will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of Cavaliers faithful, forever woven into the fabric of our proud tradition.”&nbsp;

The Cavaliers Wall of Honor program debuted during the Cavs’ 50th season in 2019-20 and was created as a permanent way to recognize and honor those who have played a distinguished and pivotal role in Cavs history. The Wall of Honor resides prominently in the North Atrium area of the FieldHouse and features a mosaic of custom designed tiles that represent each honoree. Each inductee has two silver tiles, one engraved with their name, photo, years with the organization, and their jersey number or team role. The other displays their name, key accomplishments, and jersey number/role. Gold tiles represent individuals who have retired jerseys.&nbsp;

At halftime, the inductees will be introduced with the presentation of the rings, an iconic symbol of their distinguished status. Fans can experience this momentous by purchasing tickets at cavs.com/promo.  

Terrell Brandon "1" was selected as the 11th overall pick in the 1991 NBA Draft. His professional career has taken him to three cities (Cleveland, Milwaukee, and Minneapolis) and his best play came as a Cavs player, where he earned two NBA All-Star selections. However, some of Brandon's most impressive stats may be seen off the court. He won the 1997 NBA Sportsmanship Award for his devotion to children, and his Portland-based foundation provides numerous services to underprivileged youth in his hometown. 

Chuck Broski "54" has been a longtime team statistician, since the founding of the Cavs. He is currently the crew chief in charge of the stats crew and has been with the organization since their inaugural season in 1970. He has worked as a team statistician for over 2,200 Cavs home games, including the Miracle of Richfield season, five NBA Finals, and the 2016 NBA Championship. Broski also served on the stat crew during three NBA All-Star Games in Cleveland (1981, 1997, 2022). 

Jim Chones "22" played in 400 games over five seasons for the Cavs, averaging 14.3 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. He was also a vital part of the Miracle of Richfield team. Cleveland reached its first-ever Eastern Conference finals in Chones’ second season. Following his tenure in Cleveland, he played for the Los Angeles Lakers, where he won an NBA Championship in 1979. After retiring in 1982, Chones spent 10 seasons as a television color analyst for the Cavs. He later joined the Cavs’ radio broadcast team in 2010, where he continues to educate and entertain fans to this day. 

Mike Mitchell "30" was drafted as the 15th pick in the first round of the 1978 NBA Draft by the Cleveland Cavs. He averaged nearly 20 points in three and a half years with the Wine and Gold, before playing his final six-plus seasons with the San Antonio Spurs. Mitchell, who competed in the 1981 NBA All-Star Game at Richfield Coliseum, was known for his mid-range jump shot and ability to play well under pressure in the postseason. Following his playing career, Mitchell worked as a counselor for at-risk youth in San Antonio. He passed away in 2011 at the age of 55.  

"It is truly something special to be able to recognize each class of the honorees for their unique contributions to this organization,” said Campy Russell, Director of Alumni Engagement and Cavs Legend. “Each person represents a chapter in the Cleveland Cavaliers’ collective story. This year’s event is a commemoration for the remarkable individuals who have shaped our ongoing journey."&nbsp;

Each inductee will also receive a distinctive ring that celebrates their legacy with the franchise. Cavs Legend and five-time All-Star Brad Daugherty, and Russell were Instrumental in helping to bring the Wall of Honor ring to life. They played an integral role in the design and symbolism of the custom-made pieces, along with Baron Rings. 

Designed to reflect the special significance of the tribute wall, the unique rings will be re-introduced for the first time since the 2022 induction and presented to this class. The 10K yellow gold ring has an inset of 23 diamonds and is personalized to reflect the distinctive careers of the inductee— the player's jersey number or number of years dedicated to the Cavs is showcased with their name engraved along the band. Previous inductees include Wayne Embry, Bill Fitch, John Johnson, Nick Mileti and John “Hot Rod” Williams inducted as members of the 2019 class. World B. Free, Gordon Gund, Campy Russell and Lenny Wilkins were inducted in 2022. &nbsp;

Recent Wall of Honor Inductee and Former Owner Gordon Gund's Vision Changed the Franchise Forever

Sure, the team is watching the current Playoffs from home. But anyone who follows professional hoops knows that the Wine &amp; Gold have one of the Association’s brightest futures. With a roster loaded with young talent, a culture-setting head coach and an aggressive front office that assembled it all basically from scratch, the Cavaliers trend line is unquestionably ascensional.

Now imagine the franchise on a downward trend at the same velocity. Imagine a lack of success nightly on the floor and no realistic hope of a better future. An empty arena. An organization in disarray.

Imagine wondering: Am I even going to have a basketball team to root for in a year or two?

That was the state of the Cleveland Cavaliers when Gordon Gund purchased the team for $20 million back in 1983.

Before gradually losing his sight to retinitis pigmentosa in the late-1960s, Gund – a Cleveland native born into one of the city’s most prominent families – played hockey for Harvard and served on two destroyers in the U.S. Navy. But lack of sight and lack of vision are two vastly different things – and being blind didn’t confine Gund’s incredible success in the business world or his philanthropic zeal.

Gund’s odyssey of purchasing the Cavaliers began with a completely different sport – professional ice hockey, or more specifically, the old Cleveland Barons.

After some up-and-down success at the Coliseum, the Barons merged with another troubled NHL franchise, the Minnesota North Stars. The Stars assumed Cleveland’s place in the Adams Division and even eventually reached the Stanley Cup Final a few years later. And not long after that, Gordon Gund – along with his brother, George – turned their attention back on their hometown, where the pro basketball team had fallen on hard times.

With the team in collapse and owner Ted Stepien threatening to move the franchise to Toronto, the Gunds intervened just in time – purchasing the Cavaliers, along with Stepien's Nationwide Advertising Service, and on May 9, 1983, took ownership of the team.

Fans know most of the Cavaliers story from there. The hiring of Wayne Embry and Lenny Wilkens. The bountiful 1986 Draft. The eventual move from Summit County to downtown Cleveland. The winning of the 2003 Lottery and the eventual selection of Akron native, LeBron James.

In 2005, Quicken Loans founder Dan Gilbert purchased the Cavaliers from Gund, although the former owner maintained a minority ownership stake. And like the rest of his hometown, he celebrated mightily when the Wine &amp; Gold won the World Championship in 2016.

That title might have never taken place, and there might not have been a team in Cleveland for Dan Gilbert to obtain if not for Gordon Gund – the man who was rightfully recognized just over a month ago in an arena that once bore his name.

Gund – along with the man he hired as his first head coach, Lenny Wilkens, another man who helped save basketball in Cleveland, World B. Free, and the good shepherd of Cavaliers alumni, Campy Russell – were all inducted into the Cavaliers Wall of Honor’s Class of 2022 on March 26 this past year.

As we continue to honor our Wall of Honor inductees, Cavs.com was able to sit with the Cavaliers former owner to talk about the early days of his tenure, how the ’86 Draft changed the course of the franchise and what changed when the franchise moved into its new downtown arena …

Most of us remember what the franchise was like when you sold it. What was it like when you bought it?

Gordon Gund: It’s very difficult to know what that was like for anybody who wasn’t there.

It was bankrupt, not just in a financial sense, but in a competitive sense. And in a sense of where it was headed. So, that was tough. And we knew that because we’d owned (the Coliseum) by then, for two years.

We turned the team around. John Graham did a fabulous job with that, as he did with so many things that we were involved with, as the CEO and as a great leader.

And also, when we bought it, the obvious issue was that it had no First Round Draft picks for four straight years. And in basketball, more than any other sport, a First Round pick is where you get hope and how you begin to turn it around.

So we took an option on both the franchise and on Nationwide Advertising, the parent company, because as I say, the franchise was bankrupt. And the parent, if we could turn that around, could make sense financially too.

But we said to the league, and David Stern – and this is all thanks to Dick Watson, who was such a great negotiator – where we worked it out with David, and said: ‘Look, if you want us to take this and try to turn it around, you have to give us the opportunity to do that. And the only way we can – and we’ll buy the First Round picks, we’re not looking for gifts – but we have to be able to show the fans that we have a course of action and a way to make sense out of this.

We brought Joe Tait back, and that was huge. That was very important for us.

We changed the colors and the logo – and some people might say that was not so good! (laughs) But for fans and from a community standpoint, we had to sort of disassociate ourselves with what it was and what it had become, which was something that was bringing disrespect on the city and the community.

So we did what we could, and that’s also why we kept World (B. Free). He really brought some life back to the fans and the whole area.

As we got going on the Cavs, it became clear that we needed to make a change. And that was going to happen after the 1985 and before the 1986 season.

So, there was a lot of serendipity. But also, we kept pushing to do it. We had turned around another professional sports team in Minnesota – the North Stars – so we had an idea of what it would take.

Each sport and each city are different. But I’m so glad we were able to get it turned around – with a lot of good luck and lot of good people. And that’s what made it.

"We worked it out with David (Stern), and said: ‘Look, if you want us to take this and try to turn it around, you have to give us the opportunity to do that. And the only way we can – and we’ll buy the First Round picks, we’re not looking for gifts – but we have to be able to show the fans that we have a course of action and a way to make sense out of this.'"

Wayne Embry was inducted into the first Wall of Honor. Lenny Wilkens is named this year along with you. How important was bringing that duo in together back in 1986?

Gund: Wayne came first. We did a lot of interviewing for that position. But we wanted the best general manager we could get. And Wayne had wonderful experience and impressed us tremendously.

And then with Wayne fully on board, we began to look at Lenny.

Back then, there was a lot of talk about the fact that we had the first African-American combination of head coach and GM, but it wasn’t planned. It was because they were the best people for the job. We knew that, and that’s what we wanted for the franchise and the city. And thankfully, it turned out right.

How did the move, relocating from the Richfield Coliseum to Gund Arena in downtown Cleveland come about and how did it change the franchise?

Gund: Well, having grown up here and being a native Clevelander, I’d always loved the Indians – growing up, going to their games in the ‘40s and ‘50s. Some great, very successful teams.

And here they were in the early ‘90s, hanging out to dry because Cleveland Municipal Stadium was such a big, cavernous place – and they weren’t drawing. And I understood why Dick Jacobs needed a new facility or he was going to have to move. It made sense to me.

We were very happy out in Richfield. We had a relatively new building, a great building. All the parking we wanted, no mortgage. We were able to run it ourselves and didn’t have to answer to any municipality or anything.

But then (former Mayor) Mike White and (former Cuyahoga County Commissioner) Tim Hagan approached us and asked if we wanted to consider moving – and they wanted to put it on a referendum. The polls showed it going down. And we did this all within a week or two within the actual date of the referendum.

So it was announced that we would come downtown, and we would bring the two million or so people that we’d drawn to our building every year to downtown. So, we got enough people to get it passed – and not by much, because it passed by a very small measure. But thank God that it did. We were very happy.

Both of those guys lived up to their word – and I had no doubt about it. That was a time of trust – and I hope we can get back to that time of trust in all walks of life, because it’s so important.

We wrote the things we were looking for on the back of an envelope: We don’t have to have more revenue sources, but we certainly don’t want less. And we also want a first class, state-of-the-art arena.

They lived up to their word. And somewhere, we still have that envelope.

With such a long list of incredible moments for the team and franchise over the years – are there one or two that stand out?

Gund: One, of course, was the 1986 Draft.

In that offseason, it was time for George Karl and Harry Weltman to move on. And we had some player personnel staff still left over that were helping us with the Draft and scouting and so forth.

But going into it, what we didn’t know – and to the credit of Dick Watson, kind of a (salary) cap genius – was the fact that Philadelphia didn’t have room under the cap to sign their No. 1 pick.

Dick was a mathematician; he loved this stuff. This was in the beginning days in the existence of the salary cap, and he’d analyzed this early.

So, I called up Harold Katz, the Sixers owner, and I said: ‘Harold, my understanding is, and please check this with your people, that you’re not going to be able to sign that pick. Would you want to trade the pick? And who would you like? And we could include money in the deal too, if you want that.’

So, we had Roy Hinson, who was one of the first picks we’d negotiated with the league – in fact, the very first one – and a very good player and a wonderful guy, too. Plus, Katz thought Brad (Daugherty) was soft. I don’t know where he got that, but I’m glad he did.

They wanted someone who play center and they thought Roy could. And they wanted $800,000. And that’s what we gave them the night before the Draft.

So, we got Brad and, of course, went on to get Ron Harper with the 7th pick. Hot Rod (Williams) was exonerated from the previous year’s Draft – so he was able to join us. And we got Mark (Price) in a trade in the second round. And don’t forget Johnny Newman, who was a good player.

I didn’t sleep that night because I knew we’d made a breakthrough that was going to turn this whole thing around.

I didn’t know about the head coach just yet. I knew about Wayne, even though he had to remain with Indiana and fulfill his commitment there. We were staring to talk about coaching and fixed on Lenny – and I’m glad that we did.

And another time – a very different time – was when we won the Lottery in 2003.

Who would’ve thought it? It was all chance.

Warren (Thaler) was actually in the drawing, so he knew it well before I did. He couldn’t call me, and I couldn’t talk to him. So, I was sitting there on that stage next to Jerry West, and we both had great odds, but neither of us knew. And for us to end up with that pick was tremendous for the franchise.

I remember a reporter asked me afterward who we’d take and I said: ‘We’ll have to think about that.’ laughs

And then I remember Tad (Carper) brought a briefcase with that jersey in it. And I was afraid of that! I was afraid he’d jinx it!

People tell me that when they announced the pick, I had – forgive the expression – a big sh*t-eating grin on my face! (laughs)

What did it mean to be inducted into the Cavaliers Wall of Honor with this particular group of guys?

Gund: The wonderful thing is, I know them all. I have known them and have always admired them.

World was great. He deserves very much to be here. Again, his legacy is how he helped us turn the whole franchise around. It was something that needed to be done – and he did it.

Lenny is someone I’ve always loved and admired greatly. And the same with Campy, who’s such a great example for the franchise.

So it was terrific. And I’m honored to be a part of that group.

Campy Russell Has Many Roles with the Cavs, Now Including Wall of Honor Inductee

When the Cavaliers Wall of Honor’s Class of 2022 is formally recognized on Saturday night, four individuals will be celebrated for their role in positively shaping the history of the franchise.

But whether it’s this year’s class, the inaugural class of 2019, next year’s or the year’s after that – one of those four individuals is always close to the center of it all.

Or, to use a basketball analogy – when it comes to shepherding former Cavaliers, the point man is Michael Campanella Russell.

As the Cavaliers Director of Alumni Relations, Campy is the guy who tethers the team’s past and present. And if he wasn’t being inducted along with this year’s Wall of Honor class, he’d be working tirelessly to paving the way and setting the stage for the group that was.

There’s a reason the late, great Joe Tait called Campy Russell “the ultimate team player.” And that didn’t end with his playing days.

But to simply see Campy in his role as caretaker of Cavs alumni or even as the co-host of “Cavaliers Live” alongside Jeff Phelps on Bally Sports Ohio is to sell the man short. One of 10 brothers and sisters and the father of five, the 8th overall pick in 1974 out of Michigan was a bad man on the basketball floor.

Not including his rookie season and a short three-game stint with the squad in 1984-85 before calling it quits, Campy averaged 18.2 ppg with the Cavs. He scored at 21.9 per game clip in his All-Star season (1978-79). In three Playoff appearances, the former All-American averaged 13.6 ppg during the Miracle run, 17.7 the next postseason and a gaudy 27.5 ppg in 1978.

Campy was named to the Cavs’ All-Time Team and remains in the team’s all-time Top Ten in six categories. In 2014, the former Wolverine was inducted in the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame.

The Russell family – which relocated from Jackson, Tennessee to Detroit when Campy was a child – produced three NBA players of the seven boys: along with Campy, there’s Frank, who played with the Bulls in the early-70s, and Walker, who played for Indy, Atlanta and Detroit in the mid-80s.

On Saturday night, the Cavaliers will honor not just one of its greatest players, but one of the organization’s greatest human beings.

Campy is a selfless individual. Kind, intelligent, perceptive and, at times, hilarious, the franchise just wouldn’t be the same without him. In many ways, he’s the man who keeps the Cavaliers family together.

The recent Wall of Honor inductee took a moment during a very busy weekend to chat with Cavs.com to talk about his decades-long run with the Wine &amp; Gold and what it means to be inducted with this year’s class …

How did your big family shape you into what you became, both on the floor and as a person?

Campy Russell: I have to say that it came from (my father) Jake Russell, who played sports, but he didn’t play organized sports. He was born in 1903, so he came up in a tough time for a black man.

The second one would be my brother Conus. He was an all-purpose guy, a tough guy. Basketball-wise, he was probably the best shooter out of all of us. That’s where I got my bank shot from. He believed in the bank shot. Any time he got an angle – any time – he was gonna shoot a bank. He would shoot a bank from the corner if he had an angle.

There’s my brother Larry – Dr. Larry Russell – who’ll be here this weekend and Walker, who works for the Mavericks as a scout. Aaron was an all-purpose kinda guy, probably the most athletic out of all of us. And Ted, who was 6-7, 6-8 – about my size – who played basketball for Northern Arizona and tried out for the Bucks.

What were those family battles like as a kid?

Campy: For the most part it was competitive because we were highly competitive. But most of those battles were about learning opportunities. And the other part of it was protecting us at the playground, because sometimes the older kids didn’t want us playing.

My older brothers, Conus and Aaron, they always made it safe for us. Not that was a dangerous area, but just more like: ‘Hey, don’t y’all be messing with my brothers.’ That’s the kinda rep Conus had, and Aaron had. They knew everybody, everybody knew them. And everyone knew they didn’t take a lot of (stuff), and that they were protective of the family.

My sister, Rachel, when we had a basket on the garage, she could shoot better than all of us.

And my older sister, Mary Elizabeth, she was the first of us to go to college – she went to Lane College down in Jackson, Tennessee. The year I was born (1952) was the year she graduated college.

She’s still here with us. And she’s tougher than all these guys I told you about. Because she had to help raise all of us.

How important was it to your parents that you and your siblings got an education?

Campy: I think my father saw me play in the high school state championship one year. He came to a couple Michigan games and when we went to NCAA Tournaments, the Elite 8 or whatever. My mom traveled everywhere to watch us, she liked to be part of it.

But my dad really didn’t care that much about sports. Because he believed in hard work and achievement, and he understood early on, based on Mary Elizabeth, how important it was to go to college and get a higher education.

He made sure she went to college. And that kind of set the stage for everybody else.

What made the “Miracle of Richfield” team special, and do you seen any similarities with the current Cavaliers?

Campy: There are great comparisons, in terms of how we played with and for each other – under all circumstances. And we didn’t deviate from that.

We competed hard against each other in practice. We competed -- competed to a degree where we sharpened each other’s games. So, in that respect, there’s a similarity.

We’d play eight, nine guys regularly. Nine mostly. And there was no jealousy, no animosity – because it was about trying to win. And we were winning. Nobody was beyond reproach on that team, where people are afraid to say something to a certain guy because of how he’s going to react. Nah. You get the same sh*t as everybody else.

It was just a great combination of guys that all co-existed in the same space. And that’s the way this team is today.

You were actually just getting started during the Miracle season and went on to be an All-Star in 1979. What was that stretch like for you individually?

"It was just a great combination of guys that all co-existed in the same space. And that’s the way this team is today."

I was starting now; they’d made up their mind they wanted me to be a starter. But that year (1978-79) was a big year for me from a production standpoint. I had finally hit my stride, as far as being more consistent on a night-in, night-out basis.

And I grew in a leadership role, even though we had Nate Thurmond at the time.

Nate always encouraged me to be more, to give more. He’d always say: ‘You got more. You can give us more.’

And I think that kind of brought us together. We became really good friends, even after our playing days. He was a catalyst to push me to do more and to want to do more – and that culminated in at All-Star year and it got better and better from there.

What makes you the perfect fit for the position as the team’s Director of Alumni Relations – the man who reaches out and bring this all together?

Campy: I think it’s because that job is me. It’s who I am.

Whether it’s out in the community, whether it’s in the business community. Sports community. The neighborhood. East side, west side. Akron. That’s who I am, from the standpoint of knowing enough to be humble enough, to be grateful for what I do for this team and what I do for the city.

I’m that way with anybody I come in contact with. That’s how I look at it. It’s a position of caring and wanting the right thing to happen.

It’s a position where it’s not about you. And whoever has that position after me will realize that it’s not about you. It’s about the person you’re dealing with on any level.

It was a position that was brought forward by Dan Gilbert and his group when he bought the team, and it kind of morphed into what it is. It’s a position about relationships and a lot of different things that speak to who I am.

How does it feel being inducted into the Wall of Honor alongside this year’s group?

Campy: With that list, when you think of those three guys … Lenny Wilkens, Gordon Gund and World B. Free … I don’t even think I need to say anything.

When you think of World B. Free, as far as this team is concerned, he’s a franchise-saver. A guy that has great charisma, a guy who could fill it up and create great excitement, just because of the guy he was – and is.

When he won MVP of the All-Star Game, I remember watching him play, and I remember how smooth he was. And the one thing we all talked about after that game was here’s a guy who was left-handed, who hardly ever went right, and nobody could stop him from scoring. Nobody! It was most amazing thing I’d ever seen in an All-Star Game.

And I remember how determined, how proficient, how smart he was a player. And fast-forward to him as a coach – just an outstanding, dynamic teacher of the game of basketball.

I had an opportunity to be coached by him one time. It was in an exhibition between an NBA team and one of the Olympic teams. We played up in Seattle.

And just watching him, and the way he dealt with us – I’d never had a coach deal with me the way he did. How he communicated with you. How he taught you. How he showed you the way he wanted things to go.

We only practiced two or three days, but that interaction that I had with him really spoke to me – in terms of his intellect on how he relates to the game of basketball, and his intellect as how he deals with people.

And Gordon Gund speaks for himself, in terms of impact on Cleveland basketball, Cleveland sports, Cleveland business, Cleveland charities, foundations … What more can you say about him?

When he hears your voice, I feel like he never forgets you. And what he has meant to the city of Cleveland and the Cavaliers, the guy that put the franchise back on its feet and allowed it to reach the heights that it has today.

I’m honored in a big way to be in a class with those guys.
