Wrap-Up -- It’s been said many times that this year’s Cavaliers sometimes make things tougher than they have to be.

And they took that trend right into the postseason – weathering some self-inflicted wounds and a late Pacers’ rally to take Game 1, 109-108, on Saturday afternoon at The Q.

The Cavaliers led by double-digits with just over nine minutes to play in regulation, but the Pacers took advantage of Cleveland’s poor free throw shooting and missed layups by LeBron James and Kyrie Irving – using a 17-7 run to tie the game at 105-apiece with just over three minutes to play.

Later in the period, LeBron James connected on a pair of free throws to give Cleveland a four-point lead, 109-105, with 1:17 to play.

On Indiana’s next possession, Kyrie picked Pacers center Myles Turner, but again missed a layup that would’ve put Cleveland ahead six. J.R. Smith grabbed the rebound, but fired the ball out of bounds trying to get it back to Irving.

Paul George responded by drilling his sixth triple of the night with 40.5 to play – getting the Pacers to within a point, 109-108.

After LeBron’s missed three-pointer with 20 seconds to go, the Pacers had one last opportunity.

But the Cavs forced George to give it up on Indy’s last possession and the Eastern Conference’s most notorious Cavs-Killer, C.J. Miles, couldn’t connect on the 14-footer – giving the Wine and Gold their eighth straight win over Indy at The Q; their 12th straight against Eastern Conference foes in the postseason.

The two squads who battled it out in a 135-130 double-overtime slugfest less than two weeks ago in Cleveland both shot well again on Saturday – with Tyronn Lue’s squad hitting on 54 percent of their shots and the Pacers, 49 percent. Each team hit 11 triples, but the Cavaliers kept Indy in the ballgame at the stripe – going 14-for-27 (52 percent) to the Pacers 17-for-20 mark.

”The playoffs are about adjustments and what you can do better,” said Coach Lue after the win. “I just think that if we got to those 50-50 balls and the offensive rebounds, that it would have been a totally different game. Hats off to (Indiana). They played well, but we’ll be better.”

The Cavaliers got major contributions from their Big Three in the win.

LeBron led everyone with 32 points and 13 assists – going 12-for-20 from the floor and 2-of-3 from long-range, adding six boards and three steals in the win.

Kyrie followed up with 23 points on 11-for-27 shooting – his 19th 20-point outing in his last 22 Playoff games – adding six assists, three boards and a pair of steals.

”(We had) a lot of easy missed free throws as well as layups that could have swayed the game and given us the cushion that we needed, but we just have a resilient group,” said Irving. “We believe in one another and it was a good first playoff win of a new journey – the 2017 Playoffs.”

Kevin Love did his heavy-lifting early – netting 10 of his 17 points in the first period, going 5-of-9 from the floor to go with four boards and two of Cleveland’s three blocks.

Tristan Thompson was 4-of-5 from the floor for eight points and led both squads with 13 boards, snagging six of those off the offensive glass.

The Big Three tallies 72 points as the Wine and Gold take Game 1.

Cleveland’s bench was solid in Saturday’s win, combining to shoot 8-of-13 from the floor – led by Channing Frye, who finished with 11 points on 3-for-4 shooting from long-range, 4-of-5 from the floor overall.

The Pacers got a big lift off their bench from Lance Stephenson, who finished with 16 points on 8-for-13 shooting to go with seven boards and three helpers in 26 minutes of action.

Paul George led the Pacers with 29 points – finishing 9-of-19 from the floor, including 6-of-8 from deep to go with seven assists, five boards and a steal. Jeff Teague finished with 15 points but was just 3-of-10 from the floor.

C.J. Miles – who averaged 19.3 points and shot 60 percent from deep in his last three games against Cleveland – was held in check on Saturday, finishing with five points and five fouls – going just 2-of-6 from the floor, including 1-of-3 from three-point range.

Turning Point -- The turning point of a nail-biter like Game 1 usually comes in the closing seconds, but it was the Wine and Gold getting themselves some breathing room late in the third quarter that might have saved them on Saturday.

Through the first half of action, the game featured seven ties and six lead-changes. The Cavs led by seven at intermission, but Indy cut their edge to just a deuce, 80-78, with under five minutes to play in the third.

From that point, Richard Jefferson split a pair of free throws, Channing Frye canned his second three of the night and LeBron scored on a pair of point-blank buckets – keying a 10-0 run that put Cleveland up a dozen and some much-needed space against a Pacers team that outscored the Cavaliers, 24-17, in the final period.

By the Numbers – 12-0 … LeBron James’ record, including Saturday afternoon’s win, in the first game of each of his 12 career Playoff appearances – averaging 27.5 points on 54 percent shooting to go with 7.9 boards and 6.8 assists in those victories.

”Game 1 has always been a feel-out game for myself – seeing what you can do, seeing ways you can get better. You always go into Game 2 even more prepared because you see what type of game plan they have. So like I said, as the series goes on and on you start to learn more about the team, learn more about your opponent and we’ve got to be better the next game. But it’s a great start for us.”

Up Next -- After Saturday’s Game 1 thriller at The Q, the Cavaliers will try to hold serve on Monday night for Game 2 in Cleveland. The series shifts to Indiana for Game 3 on Thursday night at Bankers Life Fieldhouse, followed by a Sunday afternoon affair for Game 4. From there, the First Round matchup rotates venues – with Game 5 set for next Tuesday in Cleveland, Game 6 slated for next Thursday in Indianapolis and Game 7 the following Saturday at Quicken Loans Arena.

The old adage – ‘heavy is the head that wears the crown’ – definitely applies to the Cavaliers 2016-17 regular season. It hasn’t been an easy title defense, but the Wine and Gold emerged from the 82-game grind as healthy as they can be as the Conference’s 2nd seed – ready for a First Round showdown with the Pacers.

The last (and lone) time the Cavaliers faced the Pacers in the postseason, Kyrie Irving was in kindergarten – as Reggie Miller’s squad wiped out Shawn Kemp and Co. in four games.

Almost 20 years later, the Cavs open their Playoff run against a Central Division foe for the second straight season.

The Cavs – who went 3-1 against the Pacers this season – have won seven straight against Indy at home, including a 135-130 double-overtime thriller on April 2, and have won 11 consecutive playoff games against Eastern Conference opponents at The Q.

The Wine and Gold went for 130-points plus twice against the Pacers this season, averaging almost 16 three-pointers per.

Indiana’s sole victory came in the first meeting of the year, a 10-point win at Bankers Life Fieldhouse with LeBron James and J.R. Smith on the shelf.

The Cavaliers as a team might not have faced off against Indiana in a postseason setting, but their leader has plenty of Playoff history against the Pacers.

LeBron James is coming off another historic campaign, and although he’ll likely cede his spot in the MVP race, the King still made history by becoming the first player in NBA history to average at least 25.0 points, 8.0 boards and 8.0 assists while shooting better than 54 percent from the floor for the season.

LeBron played in the final three meetings of the season between these two clubs – averaging 32.0 points, 8.3 rebounds and 8.3 assists, shooting nearly 60 percent from the floor in those games.

Of course, the one that’s still fresh in fans’ memories is his massive 41-point triple-double on April 2 – going 16-for-29 from the floor, adding a game-high 16 boards, 11 assists, two steals and a block.

James’ effort spoiled an equally-herculean performance by Paul George, who led everyone with 43 points on 16-for-33 shooting, including 6-of-16 from deep to go with nine boards, nine assists, three steals and a block.

George, who comes into the postseason averaging 31.6 points per over his last nine regular season games, averaged 21.5 points through the first two games against Cleveland this year, but James held him to just 13 points on 4-for-19 shooting in Cleveland’s February 15 win in Indy.

When the Pacers and Cavaliers last faced each other in the 1998 Playoffs, the Pacers averaged 88.8 points per game; the Cavaliers, 80.8. In four meetings, only the Pacers topped the century mark – a 106-77 win in Game 1.

It’s a new world in their second go-round, with the Cavaliers coming into the postseason as the highest-scoring team in the East, averaging 110.3 points per. This season, they again eclipsed the franchisee mark – drilling 1,067 triples while leading the Conference with a .385 mark from deep while averaging 13.0 threes per contest.

The Pacers weren’t far behind, finishing 4th in the NBA in three-point shooting at .376 – their best mark since the 2008-09 season.

The leader from long-range is former Cavalier, C.J. Miles, who finished 12th in the league with a career-best .413 mark. Of course, Miles was a major thorn in Cleveland’s side this season – shooting 56 percent from beyond the arc.

That’s nothing compared to the way Kyle Korver has brutalized the Pacers from long-distance this season – averaging 25.5 points, shooting .750 (18-of-24) from the floor and .824 (14-of-17) from long-range.

In four regular season contests against Indy this season, the Cavs have canned double-digit treys in each – including 18 each of the last two.

This season, Kyrie Irving continued his superstar ascent – earning his fourth All-Star nod and putting together another prolific offense campaign.

This year, the former Blue Devil produced a career-high 60 20-point games, averaging 25.2 points on the year – good for 11th in the NBA.

Fully healthy for last year’s Playoff run, Irving tallied at least 20 points in 18 of Cleveland’s 21 postseason games. With the spotlight usually trained on the LeBron-Paul George matchup, Kyrie hasn’t got the attention in the series, but in four games this year he’s notched at least 20 points and seven assists in each – averaging 25.5 points, 7.0 assists and 1.5 steals, shooting .966 (28-of-29) from the stripe.

Indiana’s new point guard is very familiar with the Wine and Gold in the postseason, with Jeff Teague having faced Cleveland with Atlanta over the last two years.

Indiana’s assist leader, Teague – who started all 82 games for the Hawks this year – has recorded 16 double-doubles, including three of his four games against Cleveland, averaging 18.5 points and 11.0 assists on the season.

Even though a left knee injury forced him to miss his fourth All-Star Game appearance, Kevin Love still had his best season in three years as a Cavalier.

He was the only player in the Eastern Conference to average at least 19.0 points and 10.0 boards this year, posted 27 20-point games, finished 8th in the NBA at 11.1 boards per contest and, maybe most importantly to the Cavaliers’ big picture, tallied a double-double in each of his last seven games – including a 20-point, 12-rebound effort in the April 2 double-OT win over Indy at The Q, going 4-for-4 for nine points in the second overtime period.

Three of Love’s 41 double-doubles on the season have come in his three appearances against Indiana – including a 27-point, 16-rebound outburst in a losing effort back in November.

Love will lock horns with nine-year vet Thaddeus Young in his first season with the Pacers. Young’s one of the craftiest and toughest defenders in the Conference and usually doesn’t post eye-popping numbers. But he closed the year strong, netting double-figures in eight of his last nine outings – including a 19-point, nine-rebound effort against Cleveland – averaging 14.6 points on .577 shooting over that span.

Since 2015, Cleveland has a 13-1 playoff home record. This past regular season, the Wine and Gold went 31-10 at home, which was tied for the second-best mark in the entire NBA.

In the 2016-17 regular season, the Cavaliers went 3-1 against the Pacers, and have also won seven straight home games over Indiana.

In four games against Indiana this campaign, Cleveland averaged 118.3 points on .481 shooting from the field, including .426 from beyond the arc. The Cavs, who put up over 130 points twice in those meetings, also averaged 15.8 three-point makes per game against Indiana.

Any conversation about the Pacers starts and ends with Paul George. Indiana's All-Star forward ended the regular season with 12 consecutive games with 20 or more points with six games of 30 or more over that span. He also finished the regular season ranked 15th in the NBA in scoring with career-high 23.7 points per game, fifth in free throw percentage, 12th in 3-pointers made (195), 31st in three-point percentage and 14th in steals.

This Playoff matchup is the second time the Central Division foes have met in the postseason (1998 First Round).

A Guide to the Wine and Gold's Opening Round Matchup Against Indy

In the LeBron James Era in Cleveland – (both of them) – he has never faced the Indiana Pacers in the Playoffs.

As a Cavalier, the four-time MVP has faced the Pistons in the Playoffs four times; the Wizards, Hawks and Celtics, three times each; the Bulls and Warriors twice and the Nets, Magic and Raptors one time apiece.

But until this Saturday, he’s only faced Indiana as a member of the Heat – winning all three series, but having his work cut out in each. The Pacers took Miami to six games in the East Semis in 2012 and to seven and six games in the Conference Finals in ’13 and ’14.

On Saturday afternoon at The Q, the King and Co. begin their true title defense. And they take on a squad they collectively haven’t faced in the postseason since his return – but who they are very, very familiar with.

Before these Central Division foes get it on this weekend, here’s a 10-step primer to the Cavaliers-Pacers matchup to pass the calm before the storm …

1 LeBron James dismissed any similarities between the Heat teams’ meetings with Indiana and this year’s First Round matchup – asserting that that team was more “ground-and-pound” with Roy Hibbert and David West. This Pacers team definitely has a different makeup, but the biggest common denominator – LeBron vs. Paul George – remains.

After Thursday’s practice at Cleveland Clinic Courts – the first in a while – James was effusive in his praise of his peer and the hurdles he’s crossed to get back here.

”If your mind’s not strong, then no matter if you have Dr. Andrews working on you, you’re not going to recover,” said James, referring to the gruesome leg injury George suffered at a USA Basketball practice session. “It’s great to see – as a competitor, as a friend, as someone that I’ve had a lot of great Playoff series against and have had some conversations with back to where he needs to be."

The best evidence of that was their epic battle in Cleveland’s 135-130 double-overtime win less than two weeks ago at The Q.

In that one, George finished with 43 points on 16-for-33 shooting, including 6-of-16 from deep to go with nine boards, nine assists, three steals and a block. James notched his 11th triple-double of the season, scoring 21 of his 41 points in the fourth quarter, going 16-for-29 overall with a game-high 16 boards, 11 assists, two steals and a block.

The numbers in that paragraph don’t need support, but in sum, George is averaging 24.3 points, 8.0 rebounds and 5.5 assists in eight games against Cleveland since LeBron’s return (missing all four meetings in 2014-15) with a 2-6 mark. Over that same span, LeBron is 6-0 against Indiana, averaging 30.5 points, 8.0 boards and 6.3 assists.

2 This will be Tyronn Lue’s second season as Cavs head coach in the postseason, putting together a 16-5 run – including a three-game win streak that made history – in his first foray.

It’s been a trying year for Lue in his first full regular season with the Wine and Gold – dealing with a rash of injuries that left a patchwork rotation for much of the year. But Lue was excellent in last year’s postseason and he’ll be calling the defensive shots the rest of the way. Lue and his staff also designed some fantastic late-game, shot-clock beating individual plays during last year’s title-winning run.

“We weathered the storm this year – missing all the guys, all the injuries, all the new parts – and we still finished second (in the East),” said Lue after Thursday’s practice. “It’s not like we backed into the Playoffs. Being the No. 2 seed after all we’ve been through this year, I’ll take that. And now that we’re in the Playoffs, we’ll do what we do.”

Nate McMillan is taking the Pacers into the Playoffs in his first year with Indy, but it’s his sixth trip to the postseason as a head coach – making two trips with the SuperSonics and three with the Blazers – his best run coming in 2005 with Seattle, falling in six to the Spurs after knocking off the Kings in the First Round.

3 By now you’ve seen the schedule, but if you prefer it in the written word …

Game 1 is Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. on ABC, Game 2 is Monday at 7 p.m. on FSO/TNT – both in Cleveland. The series shifts back to Indiana for a Thursday night Game 3 at 7 p.m. on FSO/TNT followed by a Sunday afternoon affair for Game 4 at 1 p.m. on ABC at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

If the remaining games are necessary, it’s next Tuesday (4/25) back in Cleveland, next Thursday (4/27) in Indy and the following Saturday at The Q – all times TBD.

4 Here’s what happened in four head-to-head meetings this year …

November 16: Without LeBron James and J.R. Smith, the Cavs fall, 103-93, in Indiana; Kevin Love finished with 27 points and 16 boards and Kyrie added 20 points and seven helpers, but C.J. Miles (of course) keyed a late run that iced the win.

April 2: LeBron and Paul George waged their classic duel on the floor and LeBron and Tristan Thompson got in a little one off of it, with the mild-mannered Thompson barking at James in a huddle during the OT period. In the second overtime, Kevin Love notched nine of his 20 points, going 4-of-4 from the floor in the dramatic win.

5 The Cavaliers and Pacers have only met once before in the postseason – back in 1998.

Led by Mike Fratello, the Cavs returned to the postseason after a one-year hiatus and featured Shawn Kemp, Wesley Person and a group of rookies including Derek Anderson, Cedric Henderson, Brevin Knight and Zydrunas Ilgauskas, who flummoxed Indiana’s “Dunkin’ Dutchman” – Rik Smits – over the four-game First Round matchup, averaging 17.3 points and 7.5 boards in the series.

Fratello’s stingy Cavaliers stole Game 3 – 86-77 – back at then Gund Arena, but that Pacers squad was loaded – with the likes of Reggie Miller, Chris Mullin, Dale Davis, Mark Jackson, Jalen Rose and Smits. And they stiff-armed the offensively-challenged Cavaliers in Game 4 – 80-74 – en route to the Eastern Conference Finals, where they fell to the Bulls in seven.

6 There aren’t a ton of storylines heading into a series featuring a pair of Central Division foes that know each other well but certainly share no bad blood. So if there are going to be any storylines, they’ll have to emerge as the series progresses.

Pundits might try to dust off the LeBron-Tristan spat from two Sundays ago and prepare to see multiple memes featuring Lance Stevenson blowing on things. But unless Rakeem Christmas is seeking revenge for being dealt, there isn’t much built-in drama heading into this First Round series.

“The Wine and Gold have an all-time postseason record of 100-89 (.529) – including a 63-31 (.670) mark at home, a 37-58 (.389) mark on the road and a 7-4 record in overtime games.”

7 OK, maybe it’s not “revenge.” (Anybody who got to know C.J. Miles in his two-year stint with the Cavs knows that he’s not the vengeful type.) But he sure loves sticking it to his old club since moving over to Indiana.

Supplanting Denver’s Will Barton for the current top spot, Miles has been a Cav-Killer extraordinaire – netting at least 20 points in four of his ten games against Cleveland, including three of the last five. Over that five-game span, Miles is averaging 17.8 points per – shooting .651 from the floor, .606 from long-range and .929 from the line.

That would really sting if the Cavaliers didn’t have Kyle Korver, who’s made life just as miserable for Indy. In two games against the Pacers with Cleveland this year, Korver is averaging 25.5 points – shooting .750 (18-of-24) from the floor and .824 (14-of-17) from long-range.

8 Here’s a few Cavaliers Playoff facts loaded into four sentences …

The Wine and Gold have an all-time postseason record of 100-89 (.529) – including a 63-31 (.670) mark at home, a 37-58 (.389) mark on the road and a 7-4 record in overtime games. They’ve played the Celtics and Bulls each 34 times in the postseason with a record of 16-18 vs. Boston and a 14-20 mark against the Bulls. They’ve beaten the Hawks all 12 times they’ve faced them and have taken the last 12 against Detroit. They have zero wins against San Antonio and just one more (against eight losses) against the Knicks.

9 For the second straight season, the Cavaliers inked Dahntay Jones just before the last game of the season. It might seem like a minor move, but Jones came up big in small doses –including a key stint in Game 6 of the Finals – during last year’s run.

Cleveland also signed Edy Tavares, who had one of the wildest Cavalier debuts in recent memory – swatting six shots in the second half of Wednesday’s loss to Toronto. The six blocks were the most since Big Z rejected seven against Utah in mid-November of 2007 and was one shy of tying Larry Nance for the most (7) in a single half.

Tavares performance in the locker room was almost as inspiring. On getting the opportunity to play with LeBron and Kyrie, Tavares beamed, “It was a shock for me because they are my favorite players. They inspire me. LeBron and Kyrie Irving, I have to work hard and do everything I can to be like them. To play with him (LeBron), I see him and it’s like a movie for me. It’s not real! I can’t explain what I feel now.”

10 In the last piece of minutia, most of the traveling staff is looking forward to a series in Indy.

The arena is very cool – the fans are loyal and friendly, there’s a ton of Pacers (and racing) history on display in a big, naturally-lit atrium. In the arena, the team has a practice court that’s adorned like an old gym – exposed brick walls, wooden bleachers, an old-school clock with a seconds-hand. Bankers Life Fieldhouse also has Banana Split Dippin’ Dots – which is nice.

Downtown Indianapolis can prepare for many Cavalier visits to the world-famous St. Elmo’s Steak House, where the shrimp in the shrimp cocktail is as big as your head and the sauce will make it explode. And I can personally assure plenty of runs to the open-til-2 a.m. Steak’n’Shake two blocks from the hotel.
