John Beilein says Darius Garland will play in Cavaliers’ preseason opener; not yet ready to name starters

“It was really good just to get him out there playing again, he looked very comfortable,” Beilein said. “He’s a smart kid, he’s picked up things really well.”

Sunday marked Cleveland’s fifth practice in a row. With so much to learn ahead of the regular-season opener on Oct. 23 in Orlando, it’s tough for Beilein to find a break in the schedule. It’s a new coaching staff. There are new guys and different lineup combinations to try. In a system that’s predicated on reading and reacting, Beilein wants his guys to play with freedom rather than thinking through movements.

Players have also recently talked about the change in terminology from past seasons -- another difficult adjustment in such a short period.

“It’s different than the standard NBA terminology so just have to make those adjustments," center Tristan Thompson said.

Sunday was not a day of rest for the Wine & Gold, still trying to fine tune and get accustomed to John Beilein’s system as the 2019-20 preseason officially tips off on Monday.

The Cavaliers scrimmaged for the second straight day and everyone but rookie Dylan Windler (nursing a sore left leg through the preseason) was able to participate. Once again, Darius Garland took place in the scrimmage, and he’ll see some time tomorrow night against San Lorenzo.

Who’ll be in the starting five tomorrow night is anyone’s guess. And John Beilein warned against reading too much into that unit. “I don’t even know who it’s going to be,” quipped Coach.

Beilein has been trying to implement his system to the point where guys are no longer thinking through everything and merely reacting. But one of the first lessons the former Michigan coach is learning is the time constraints of the Association.

Cavaliers ready or not, preseason starts on Monday

John Beilein and the Cavaliers have practiced, scrimmaged, gone through film work, even drawn up plays and schemes on whiteboards and they get their first chance to show off what they've learned Monday night at RocketMortgage Fieldhouse against Buenos Aires Sanlorenzo from Argentina.

The new head man in Wine and Gold knows there'll be some growing pains after throwing so much, so soon on his new team.

“New coaching staff, new people, we have a lot of volume and we had a really good scrimmage," said Beilein after wrapping up their final practice before their preseason tips off. "You’re gonna have great practices and you’re gonna have ones that are good but not great so we’ve been going back and forth with a whole bunch of them. I wish I could say we’re ready to play tomorrow but we’ll find out where we are.”

Veteran big man Tristan Thompson says training camp has been going well under Beilein so he expects some of Coach's concepts to already take hold Monday at the Fieldhouse.
