Brad Stevens on Cavaliers coach John Beilein: ‘He will do a great job in Cleveland, will be a lot quicker than I was’

INDEPENDENCE, Ohio -- Boston Celtics coach Brad Stevens has been in the same position as John Beilein -- a trumpeted college coach trying to make a successful NBA transition.

Stevens’ advice for Beilein, who is in the midst of his first NBA preseason and less than two weeks away from making his real NBA debut, was straightforward.

“I said, ‘The schedule is a lot harder, the summer is a lot better,’” Stevens explained ahead of the Cavaliers-Celtics preseason matchup Sunday afternoon.

The initial NBA chat between Beilein and Stevens came last summer when Beilein was looking at the Detroit Pistons’ opening. The two didn’t discuss Beilein’s pursuit of the Cleveland job months back. Nor did they get together in Boston over the weekend because of the Cavs’ tight schedule -- and Beilein’s desire to relax in his room on the road.

Cavaliers don't go to the tape, try to forget Sunday's disaster against Celtics

Whether they're ready or not — and judging from a 118-72 preseason loss Sunday in Boston, they're not — the Cavaliers open the regular season a week from Wednesday in Orlando.

From losing by 46 points to scoring 26 points in the first half to shooting 7-for-40 on 3-pointers — the starters were 1-for-22 — to finishing with more turnovers (27) than field goals (26), it was a game the Cavs will try to forget as they prepare to host the Celtics tonight in their preseason finale at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.

"That's one where you just throw the film, throw the game out the window," power forward Kevin Love said following practice Monday. "We had some teaching points today, but nothing we needed to see on film. Sometimes you've just got to scrap it and come out the next day and bust your (butt). We did that today."

Love was given Sunday off to rest, while starting center Tristan Thompson sat out with a sore groin and rookie point guard Darius Garland nursed a sore ankle. Big men John Henson (groin) and Ante Zizic (foot) also remained sidelined and are unlikely to play tonight.
