2017 January Head of the Class and All-Star Kids Winners

Education is one of the pillars of the Cleveland Cavaliers’ community efforts and as part of that, the organization recognizes exemplary teachers and students throughout Northeast Ohio. Each month during the season, the Cavs select one teacher and one student to receive the team’s Head of the Class and All-Star Kids awards, respectively.

Head of the Class recognizes teachers in Northeast Ohio that make a difference in their students’ lives both inside and outside of the classroom. The winner for January was Amir Jones, a band and piano teacher at Harvey High School in Painesville. Since assuming his position as Director of Bands in 2007, he has grown the band from 30 students to 140. He is well liked and respected by his students and consistently shows that he roots for them and encourages them not only to succeed in his band, but in the rest of their school activities as well.

Mr. Jones and his class enjoyed a visit from Cavs in-arena host Ahmaad and the team’s mascot, Moondog, who presented him with a $500.00 donation to use for his program. Mr. Jones also received tickets to the January 19th game against Phoenix, where he was honored on-court.

All-Star Kids recognizes students who set a positive example for their peers. January’s winner was Alonna DeJarnette, a fifth grader at Bluestone Elementary School in Euclid. She is a leader in the classroom, both academically and behaviorally. She works hard for her grades and likes working with other students. Alonna is on the school’s student council, volunteers to help first graders with their reading, and reads the school announcements.

Ahmaad and Moondog surprised Alonna at school to present her with tickets to the January 27th game against Brooklyn and had a party for her class. Alonna was honored at center court before the start of the game against the Nets.
