The Denver Nuggets of the early 1980s were one of the NBA’s best ever when it came to scoring points. In the 1981-82 season, they set a league record by averaging 126.5 points per game. Two seasons later, they were scoring in bunches again — and setting records, too.
Two months after logging (and losing) the highest-scoring game in NBA history, the Nuggets made some more history on Jan. 11, 1984. The Nuggets beat the San Antonio Spurs 163-155 in the highest-scoring non-OT game in NBA history. (However, their mark would last for six years, when the Nuggets and Golden State Warriors would combine for 320 points on Nov. 2, 1990.)
Denver’s Kiki Vandeweghe scored 50 points (on 21-for-30 shooting) while George Gervin had 38 points (15-for-24 shooting) for the Spurs. Additionally, only four players — the Spurs’ Fred Roberts and John Paxson and the Nuggets’ Dan Schayes and Kenny Denard — failed to score in double-figures in the game.
