Game Recap: Thunder 87, Magic 85

LAS VEGAS — The Oklahoma City Thunder defeated the Orlando Magic, 87-85, in the Las Vegas Summer League at Thomas and Mack Center on Friday.

While Oklahoma City led for the majority of this game, it wasn’t decided until the final shot. In fact, the Thunder led for over 35 minutes of this game, as they led by 16 points at times in the second quarter. With that said, the game was within a seven-point margin for the entirety of the fourth quarter, and the game wasn’t decided until the final seconds. Deonte Burton was the hero, hitting the game-winning floater at the buzzer, breaking the tie to seal the win for Oklahoma City. The shooting disparity was huge, with the Thunder connecting on 49.2 percent of their shots while holding the Magic to just 38.4 percent from the field. Defense was also key, with Oklahoma City recording 10 steals and Orlando picking up just five steals.

The Magic (2-3) were led by Rodney Purvis, as he provided 20 points, three rebounds and three assists off the bench. Troy Caupain led the starters with 17 points, five rebounds and four assists. However, those two combined to shoot just 12-of-31 from the field. Tyler Rawson and Braian Angola Rodas scored 11 points apiece while Jacobi Boykins totaled 13 points and four rebounds.

Deonte Burton was the hero for the Thunder (3-2), as he finished with 17 points, eight rebounds, five assists and three steals to add to his impressive game-winner. He was actually one of three bench players to reach double figures in scoring — Hamidou Diallo and Devon Hall being the other two, combining for 25 points off the pine. Terrance Ferguson led the starters with 14 points and two assists.
