Team USA Stocked With Warriors

For the first time in franchise history, the Warriors have three members on Team USA.

It’s been quite some time since the Warriors had a representative on the U.S. Olympic team, but that’s all about to change very soon. Klay Thompson, Draymond Green and Kevin Durant have all been selected as members of Team USA, who will go for gold in the upcoming Olympics in August in Rio, Brazil. That makes the Warriors the most represented NBA team on the national squad, and that doesn’t even include Stephen Curry, who had an opportunity to participate but opted to decline in favor of some well-deserved rest. Team USA will convene in Las Vegas for Training Camp next week before playing a series of exhibition games across the country, including a matchup against China at Oracle Arena on July 26. Here are a few notes and numbers behind the Warriors’ ongoing involvement with Team USA:

  • The Warriors are the only NBA team with three players on Team USA (Kevin Durant, Draymond Green, Klay Thompson)
  • Golden State has not had any representatives on an Olympic team since 1992, when Chris Mullin was a member of the fabled Dream Team that won gold in Barcelona 24 years ago
  • The 2016 Olympic Games will be the second Olympics for Kevin Durant, who helped USA win Gold in London
  • Kevin Durant averaged a team-high 19.5 points in the 2012 Olympic Games on a team that also featured Warriors forward Andre Iguodala, then a member of the Denver Nuggets.
  • Kevin Durant (2010) and Klay Thompson (2014) have both helped USA win gold medals at the FIBA World Cup, both doing so alongside Warriors teammate Stephen Curry.
