The back-to-back NBA Champion Golden State Warriors Vice President of Community Relations and Executive Director of the Warriors Community Foundation Joanne Pasternack was honored as a Game Changer: Women in Sports Business by the SportsBusiness Journal/Daily, it was announced today.

Pasternack oversees the Warriors Community Foundation and all day to day management of the Warriors community relations efforts. The past season, the Warriors Community Foundation has donated over $1.2 million in grants to 49 Bay Area organizations with a dedicated emphasis on educational equity. Since its inception in 2012, the Warriors Community Foundation has donated over $9.2 million. In addition, the organization as a whole has committed more than 8,000 hours of community service to Bay Area non-profits via participation in over 300 community events. In aggregate, the Warriors have directly impacted more than 2.6 million people via hospital visits, food and toy drives, grants, fitness, education and literacy events, and more.

In addition to being named a SportsBusiness Journal’s Game Changer: Women in Sports Business, Pasternack was also selected as a 2012 40 Under 40 and 2013 Woman of Influence by the San Jose/Silicon Valley Business Journal and a recipient of the Bay Area Women’s Sports Initiative 2013 All-Star Ambassador Award and City Year San Jose/Silicon Valley’s 2012 Moccasin Award for Service. Pasternack also serves on the Boards of Special Olympics Northern California/Nevada, Beyond Sport and Purpose+Sport and is an Adjunct Professor at the University of San Francisco, George Washington University and Georgetown’s graduate sports management program, teaching and advising on Corporate Social Responsibility in Sports.

Game Changers: Women in Sports Business, launched in 2011 by honoring female executives in leadership and decision-making roles throughout the sports industry. Sports Business Journal will recognize the impact the 35 women in the class of 2018 have on their organizations, communities and the industry at large as part of a special issue on September 10. They will then be honored at SBJ’s Game Changers conference in New York on Sept. 12 in front of more than 450 industry executives.

The Golden State Warriors announced today $1.25 million in grants to 51 organizations working to improve educational equity in Alameda and San Francisco Counties, including flagship grants to Oakland Unified School District and San Francisco Unified School District.

Since its founding in 2012, the Warriors Community Foundation has delivered $6.7 in impact to support education and youth development in the Bay Area.

“As the Bay’s Team, supporting the community we live and play in is one of our highest priorities,” said Warriors Owner and CEO Joe Lacob. “We are committed to helping close the achievement gap for disadvantaged youth in the Bay Area.”

At halftime during tonight’s game against the Trailblazers, Warriors Community Foundation President of the Board Nicole Curran and Warriors Community Foundation Executive Director Jose Gordon will present a ceremonial check to Oakland Public Education Fund Executive Director Brian Stanley and San Francisco Unified School District Deputy Superintendent Guadalupe Guerrero.

The grants will support a range of programs and organizations, including investments in early childhood development, elementary literacy, middle schools, STEM, and college access and persistence.

“Social responsibility is a hallmark of good business and an integral part of our culture,” said Warriors Community Foundation Executive Director Jose Gordon. “By supporting efforts to improve access and opportunity for underserved students, we believe we can do our part to make a difference.”

In total, grants will be made to 23 organizations that operate in Alameda County, 18 that serve San Francisco County, and 10 that offer programming in both areas. The NBA Champion Golden State Warriors announced today that Oakland Unified School District and San Francisco Unified School Districts are among 36 organizations that have been awarded grants from the Warriors Community Foundation. The grants, totaling $1 million, aim to improve educational outcomes for underserved youth in Alameda and San Francisco Counties. This is the Warriors Community Foundation’s second grants cycle, following last season’s inaugural program.

“We’re honored to continue supporting local education,” said Warriors Co-Executive Chairman and CEO Joe Lacob. “As the Bay’s Team, the Warriors family has made a commitment to help improve opportunities and outcomes for disadvantaged students.”

The grants will support a range of programs and organizations, including efforts around college access and readiness, middle school engagement, elementary literacy and early childhood development.

Warriors Award $1 Million in Grants for Local Education

The NBA Champion Golden State Warriors, in partnership with private, statewide health foundation- The California Endowment, will unveil a newly refurbished basketball court at Rainbow Recreation Center in East Oakland (5800 International Boulevard, Oakland CA 94621) on Saturday, December 12 from 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. in honor of  recently retired Warriors star Jason Richardson, it was announced today. Richardson and the Warriors Community Foundation will join The California Endowment, the Good Tidings Foundation, Oakland Parks &amp; Recreation and elected officials to unveil the new courts and conduct a basketball clinic for 80 local youth.

The event is part of the Warriors Community Foundation’s Step Up Your Game program, and is being held in partnership with The California Endowment’s East Oakland Building Healthy Communities initiative. The new court will feature a 5,000 square foot indoor playing surface, two new NBA plexiglass hoops systems, and spectator seating.

The Warriors, working in collaboration with Good Tidings Foundation, have refurbished over 50 basketball courts around the Bay Area, helping to revitalize local neighborhoods and communities. Courts are resurfaced and receive new backboards, nets, rims, striping, and signage.

Originally selected by the Warriors with the fifth overall pick of the 2001 NBA Draft, Richardson averaged 18.3 points, 5.4 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 1.27 steals and 35.5 minutes in 438 games (431 starts) with Golden State from 2001-07. The 6’6” swingman was a key member of the celebrated “We Believe” playoff run in 2007, when the Warriors ended a 13-year playoff drought and became the first eight-seed in NBA history to defeat a one-seed in a seven-game playoff series with a 4-2 upset over the Dallas Mavericks. While with the Warriors, the Michigan State product won the NBA Slam Dunk Contest in consecutive years (2002, 2003) and currently ranks third on the franchise’s all-time three-pointers made list (700) behind only Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson.

Throughout the 2015-16 season, the Step Up Your Game program will hold basketball court refurbishments, additional Warriors Basketball Camps and Warriors Dance Team dance clinics that will address the need for youth-oriented programs in the Bay Area that seek to promote and reinforce positive lifestyle habits.
