2015-16 Warriors Set Numerous Records and Made 2nd Straight Trip to NBA Finals

The sting of falling just short in Game 7 of the NBA Finals is undeniable, but it should not diminish the incredible season that was for the Warriors. The best regular season record in NBA history, three All-Stars, unanimous MVP selection and Coach of the Year are just some of the accomplishments that are part of the fabric of the 2015-16 Warriors, a team that made its second straight trip to the NBA Finals.

The Warriors’ 88 victories (regular and postseason combined) were the most ever in a single season. The tally started at the opening tip of the regular season, as the Dubs reeled off an NBA-record 24 straight wins to start the season.

Early in the season, Coach Kerr stated his goal of finishing atop the West to lock in homecourt advantage throughout the playoffs. Due to an incredible season by the Spurs, the Warriors had to wait until their 70th win to officially accomplish that mission, marking the second straight year that the Dubs secured the best regular season record in the West, and the entire NBA.

The Dubs went on to set an NBA record with 73 wins in the regular season, and they never lost consecutive games until the Western Conference Finals. The resilient Dubs were 14-1 in games following a loss going into the NBA Finals. And despite the way the Finals ended, the Dubs did typically play their best against the best, going 16-1 in the regular season against teams with a .600 winning percentage or better.

The Warriors made an NBA record 1,077 3-pointers in the regular season, besting the mark set by the 2014-15 Rockets with 933, and they followed that with 306 more in the postseason, also an NBA record. Remarkably, their team-wide 41.6 shooting percentage from distance was the second highest in league history. The net result was the league’s best offense in terms of efficiency: Their 112.5 points per 100 possessions and 48.7 overall shooting percentage were both tops in the NBA.

Splash Brothers Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson – more on them later – led the Dubs’ season-long 3-point parade, but Draymond Green, Harrison Barnes, Andre Iguodala, Leandro Barbosa, Brandon Rush and Marreese Speights all proved their ability to join the Splash Party, each player shooting at least 35 percent from the perimeter.

The plethora of on-court success enjoyed by the 2015-16 Warriors trickled down to several individual awards and honors.

Stephen Curry earned his second straight MVP Award and was the first-ever unanimous recipient of the award, meaning he received all 131 first place votes by the panel that determined the award. The NBA’s 2015-16 scoring (30.1) and steals (2.14) leader had a seemingly endless supply of jaw-dropping, did-you-see-that moments, and his teammates share their favorites in the video below.

Voted as a starter in the All-Star Game for the third straight season, Curry obliterated his own single-season 3-point record. He finished with 402 made treys this season, a 41 percent increase in his previous record of 286 treys set in the 2014-15 season.

Klay Thompson had his best season of his career to date as well, averaging a career-best 22.1 points per game. He further solidified his status as one of the top two-way players in the game with his second straight All-Star selection and a spot on the All-NBA Third Team. Thompson combined with his Splash Brother to form the highest scoring duo in the league, and his 276 made 3-pointers was the highest single-season total in league history by a player not named Stephen Curry. Thompson, however, got the best of his MVP teammate at All-Star Weekend in Toronto, where he tied the all-time single-round record with a 27 in the final, besting 2015 Three-Point Contest champion Curry and making the Splash Brothers the first set of teammates to win the competition in consecutive seasons.

Draymond Green’s rise to an elite player was recognized with a trip to his first All-Star Game and an All-NBA Second Team selection. He set the Warriors’ franchise record with 13 triple-doubles, and as indicative of that fact, he did a little bit of everything for the Dubs. He led the team in assists (7.4) and rebounds (9.5) and was the third leading scorer, while also playing elite defense. He was the runner-up to Defensive Player of the Year and an All-Defensive First Team selection for the second straight year, and his net rating of +18.9 was tops in the NBA, meaning that for every 100 possessions in which Green was on the court, the Warriors outscored their opponents by 18.9 points.

Steve Kerr became the first Warriors coach to earn Coach of the Year Honors in two and a half decades, but he hardly looks at that as an individual award. It’s an honor shared with Luke Walton, the now Lakers head coach who guided the Dubs to a 39-4 record while Kerr recovered from complications related to a pair of offseason back surgeries, and the rest of the Warriors coaching staff, players and front office. Here’s what some closest to Kerr had to say about the 2015-16 Coach of the Year.

The Warriors have made two consecutive trips to the NBA Finals, winning a Championship in one and falling just short of another. While drafts, trades and free agency can always affect a roster, the Dubs do have their three 2015-16 All-Stars, the 2015 NBA Finals MVP and their starting center all under contract for next season. Whether or not that means the Dubs are bound for a third straight trip to The Finals remains to be seen, but the squad is certainly in a favorable position for this golden era of Warriors basketball to continue.

Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry, forward Draymond Green and guard Klay Thompson have been named to the 2015-16 All-NBA Team, with Curry earning First Team honors, Green garnering Second Team accolades and Thompson receiving Third Team recognition, the NBA announced today. The three players are the first Warriors trio to be named to the All-NBA team since Paul Arizin (First Team), Neil Johnston (First Team) and Jack George (Second Team) all earned the honor in 1955-56. Curry is the first Warrior to be named to three-straight All-NBA teams since Chris Mullin (four-straight from 1988-92) and the first to earn consecutive First Team accolades since Rick Barry (three-straight from 1973-76).

Curry, Green and Thompson helped lead the Warriors to an NBA-record 73 wins in 2015-16 (73-9, .890), eclipsing the previous mark of 72 wins set by the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls. The Warriors saw a six-game improvement in the win column in 2015-16 and joined the Bulls as the only teams in NBA history to earn at least 65 wins in consecutive campaigns.

Curry, who was the first player in NBA history to be unanimously selected as the league’s Most Valuable Player, was the only player to earn a unanimous selection to the All-NBA First Team. The reigning back-to-back MVP earned his third career All-NBA honor and second-straight First Team selection after appearing in 79 games (all starts) and averaging a league-leading 30.1 points to go with 6.7 assists, 5.4 rebounds and a league-best 2.14 steals in 34.2 minutes. Curry, who broke his own NBA record by hitting 402 three-pointers, shot 50.4 percent from the field and 45.4 percent from three-point range (third in the NBA) while leading the league in free throw percentage (.908), becoming just the seventh player in NBA history to hit at least 50 percent from the field, 40 percent from three and 90 percent from the line while qualifying for the league minimums in all three categories, joining Steve Nash as the only players to hit 50/45/90 over the course of an entire campaign. The 28-year-old guard also led the league in Player Efficiency Rating (31.56), true shooting percentage (.669) and offensive rating (116.7) and posted more games with at least 30 points (40), 40 points (13) and 50 points (3) than any player in the league.

Green, who received First Team All-Defensive honors for the second-straight season, appeared in 81 games (all starts) and tallied career highs of 14.0 points, 9.5 rebounds and 7.4 assists (seventh in the NBA) in 34.7 minutes, earning his first career All-NBA selection. Green is the first player to average at least 13 points, nine rebounds and seven assists since Grant Hill in 1996-97, adding 1.47 steals and 1.40 blocks while hitting a career-best from the field (.490) and from three-point range (.388). A first-time NBA All-Star in 2015-16, Green set the franchise-record for single-season triple-doubles with 13, besting Tom Gola’s mark of nine set in 1959-60.

Thompson appeared in 80 games (all starts) and averaged a career-high 22.1 points to go with 3.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 33.3 minutes, earning his second career All-NBA selection after a Third Team nod in 2014-15. The fifth-year guard shot a career-best 47.0 percent from the field while ranking fifth in the league in three-point percentage (.425), hitting a career-best 276 three-pointers (third-most in Warriors history). Thompson earned his second career All-Star selection and edged out Curry to win the Three-Point Contest at All-Star Saturday Night in Toronto.

The All-NBA Teams were chosen by a panel of sportswriters and broadcasters in the United States and Canada.  The media voted for All-NBA First, Second and Third Teams by position with points awarded on a 5-3-1 basis.  Voters were asked to select two guards, two forwards and one center for each team, choosing players at the position they play regularly.  Players who received votes at multiple positions were slotted at the position where they received the most votes.

Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green received the third annual Alvin Attles Community Impact Award in recognition of his efforts to make a positive impact on the lives of underserved youth in the Bay Area, it was announced today. The annual award, named in Warriors Legend Alvin Attles’ honor, celebrates Attles’ long-time commitment and dedication to the community and recognizes a current Warriors player who goes above and beyond to support local underprivileged youth.

The Warriors Community Foundation is honoring Green for his continued commitment to giving back by donating $15,000 to a charity of Green’s choice. On behalf of Green, the Warriors Community Foundation will donate $7,500 to the First Tee of the East Bay and $7,500 to the Fam 1st Family Foundation. The First Tee of the East Bay provides learning facilities and educational programs to promote character development and life-enhancing values through the game of golf. The Fam 1st Family Foundation, launched by Oakland Technical High School graduates and NFL veterans Joshua Johnson and Marshawn Lynch, aims to build self-esteem and academic learning skills in underprivileged youth through mentorship and educational workshops.

“It’s an honor to be given this recognition for my commitment to serving Bay Area youth and families this season and throughout my four years with the team,” said Green. “I’m humbled to receive an award in the name of a Warriors Legend like Alvin Attles and look forward to continuing in his example as a leader and active participant in the Bay Area community.”

Throughout the 2015-16 season, Green went above and beyond in supporting children and families in need throughout the Bay Area including:
•	In November, Green partnered with the Oakland Marriott to provide a Thanksgiving luncheon for families and youth from the Richmond Police Activities League to celebrate the holiday with the Warriors All-Star forward.
•	As part of the NBA Cares Season of Giving campaign in December, Green joined his teammates and 3,000 season ticket holders to support the #hashtaglunchbag movement by creating and delivering 20,000 lunch bags to underserved youth and families in the Bay Area.
•	In December, Green joined the Clorox Company to take 30 youth from Covenant House, an Oakland homeless shelter which serves at-risk youth between the ages of 18-24, on a surprise Holiday shopping spree.
•	Also in December, Green dressed up as Santa Claus for a Holiday Caravan to surprise families throughout the Bay Area with gifts for the holidays including 8-year-old Vallejo youth Kumar Polk, who was critically injured in a drive-by shooting last year, and his family.. Green also visited a local Kaiser Permanente hospital to drop off presents for youth spending their holidays in the hospital and additional families in the Bay Area.
•	In March, Green joined The First Tee of the East Bay at Oakland’s Acorn Woodland Elementary School for a school assembly and to encourage Oakland principals to enroll in The First Tee’s National Schools Program to promote character development and life enhancing values through the game of golf.
•	Also in March, Green hosted 13-year-old Je’Kob Ruscheinsky and his family from Las Vegas, Nevada for a Warriors game. Green met with Je’Kob, who receives chemotherapy treatments for Pars Planitis, pregame and shared words of encouragement and inspiration with him.
•	On April 13, Green invited three underprivileged East Bay high school students to the team’s NBA record-breaking 73rd win against the Memphis Grizzlies.
•	Green participated in a variety of additional campaigns this season, including #LeanInTogether, an ongoing public awareness campaign focused on the role men play in reaching gender equality; and Not In Our Town, an anti-bullying campaign to stop violence and hate and to build safe and inclusive Bay Area schools and communities.

Warriors Legend Alvin Attles is in his sixth decade with the franchise, having served tirelessly as a player, coach, executive and civic leader. Attles’ current stint with the same team represents the longest active streak in the NBA. Attles is one of only six players in Warriors history to have his jersey retired (#16) and remains one of the most publicly recognizable sports figures in the Bay Area. His endless contributions locally as a player, executive and civic leader resulted in his much-deserved induction into the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame in 1993 and with the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame’s John R. Bunn Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014. Additionally, in the summer of 2006, the newly refurbished outdoor basketball court at Lincoln Square Park in downtown Oakland was permanently named “Alvin Attles Court” in honor of the local legend and longtime Oakland resident. In the latter stages of the 1969-70 NBA campaign, Attles was named head coach of the Warriors, where his 30-game stint as head coach to end that season proved to be the start of the longest head coaching run in Warriors franchise history, a 13-plus year tenure which produced, among other highlights, the lone NBA Championship in the club’s West Coach history (1974-75). Attles completed his coaching career in 1982-83 to become the Warriors General Manager, heading the team’s basketball operations for three years.

The Warriors Community Foundation is dedicated to making a meaningful impact on the lives of underserved Bay Area children. The Foundation makes grants to improve educational equity for low-income students in Alameda and San Francisco Counties, refurbishes public basketball courts around the Bay Area, and donates thousands of tickets each season to schools and nonprofits that serve children and families. The Foundation is sustained by generous contributions from Warriors owners, players, partners, and fans.

Draymond Green becomes the first player in Warriors' history to earn First Team All-Defense accolades in consecutive seasons.

Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green has been named to the 2015-16 NBA All-Defensive First Team, the league announced today. Green, who was named First Team All-Defensive in 2014-15, joins Nate Thurmond as the only Warriors to earn multiple First Team accolades in his career and is the first player in franchise history to earn All-Defensive First Team honors in back-to-back campaigns.

Green, who was the runner-up in Defensive Player of the Year voting for the second consecutive season, appeared in 81 games (all starts) in 2015-16 and posted career highs of 14.0 points, 9.5 rebounds and 7.4 assists (seventh in the NBA). Green added 1.47 steals and 1.40 blocks and hit 100 three-pointers, one of only two players to average at least one steal, one block and one three-pointer per game, while hitting a career-best from the field (.490) and from three-point range (.388). The fourth-year forward posted a defensive rating of 97.5 (points allowed per 100 possessions) and led the league with a net rating of 18.9. A first-time NBA All-Star selection in 2015-16, Green set the franchise-record for single-season triple-doubles with 13, besting Tom Gola’s mark of nine set in 1959-60.

As a team, the Warriors finished third in defensive rating (100.9) and second in net rating (11.6), holding opponents to 43.5 percent from the field (third-best in the NBA) and 33.2 percent from three-point range (second). Golden State led the league in point differential (+10.8) for the second consecutive season.
