Warriors Honor Martin Luther King, Jr. - 1/18/10
January 1, 2010
On January 18th, the Warriors honored Martin Luther King Jr. through their Read To Achieve and Junior Leaders community relations program.
Throughout the day, kids from San Francisco's ROCK (Real Options for City Kids) Program shadowed Warriors employees and media members to experience first-hand the responsibilities and duties of various professions at an NBA game.
The Junior Leaders gained valuable experience in such areas as VIP Services ...
... ticket services ...
... event management ...
... business operations ...
... security ...
... luxury suites ...
... newspaper writing ...
... game operations ...
... public relations ...
... community relations ...
... ticket operations ...
... corporate sales and much more.
Junior announcer Natali Cisneros had the opportunity of a lifetime and introduced the staring lineups for each team.
Among those being introduced was junior Warriors player Priscilla Philippi.
As each player was introduced, they gave books and other educational materials to children from the ROCK Program.
Reading was one of the themes of the day, as the Warriors and Ross Stores hosted a book drive.
In addition, the Warriors and Ross Stores teamed up again to host a Reading Time Out during the game.
Each kid who attended received a free shirt promoting the Warriors' Read to Achieve program.
The kids were thrilled to see that Clifford the Big Red Dog attended the event.
The kids were also pleasantly surprised with a special guest reading from Corey Maggette.
Afterward, the Warrior Girls asked questions about Martin Luther King, Jr ...
... and those who answered correctly received special prizes.
Back on the court, Anthony Morrow addressed the crowd about the legacy of Dr. King.
And during a break in the action, all 15 of the Junior Leaders were recognized with a special on-the-court ceremony.
From the Junior Leaders program ...
... to the Ross Stores Book Drive and Reading Time Out, the Warriors' MLK Day festivities were a huge success.
The Warriors thank ROSS Stores for its continued support of the community as the presenting sponsor of the Warriors Read to Achieve program.
