Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry has been named the NBA Western Conference Player of the Week for games played Monday, March 23, through Sunday, March 29, the NBA announced today. The award is the second career weekly honor for Curry, who was named Player of the Week for games played Nov. 3-9, and is a franchise-record fifth such accolade by a Warrior this season (Klay Thompson has won the award three times).
In four games last week, Curry averaged 30.0 points (third in the NBA), 8.0 assists (tied for sixth), 3.5 rebounds and 1.75 steals in 32.0 minutes, helping the Warriors to a perfect 4-0 record that included four-straight double-digit victories and featured road wins at Portland, Memphis and Milwaukee. Curry, who leads the NBA in three-pointers for a third consecutive season, hit 63.2 percent from three-point range (24-of-38) and 57.7 percent from the field over those four games, hitting at least five threes in all four contests. Curry led the Warriors in scoring in all four games and tallied a pair of 30-point/10-assist performances in road wins over Portland (March 24) and Memphis (March 27), finishing the week with a plus/minus of +16.8.
Golden State achieved several franchise milestones over the past week, clinching the Pacific Division title with a win at Portland on March 24 and securing the best record in the Western Conference with a win at Milwaukee on March 28, feats the club hadn’t accomplished since the 1975-76 season. In the win over the Bucks, the Warriors set a single-season franchise record with their 60th win—their first 60-win season in the franchise’s 69-year history—and extended their franchise record for road wins in a single season to 26. The Warriors (60-13, .822) have won nine-straight games overall, including the last seven by at least 13 points, becoming just the sixth team in NBA history to win seven-straight by that margin.
In 71 games this season (all starts), Curry holds averages of 23.7 points (sixth in the NBA), 7.9 assists (sixth), 4.3 rebounds and 2.10 steals (third) in 32.8 minutes. The six-year veteran has hit 48.2 percent from the field, 43.1 percent from three-point range (tied for fifth) and a league-best 91.6 percent from the free throw line. He leads all players in Net Rating (17.5) and plus/minus (+12.0).
The award marks the 36th time a Warriors player has been named Player of the Week since the NBA began giving out the award in 1979. In addition to a pair of weekly awards this season, Curry was named Western Conference Player of the Month for games played in October/November, the third monthly honor of his career (April 2013 & April 2014).
Brooklyn’s Brook Lopez was named Player of the Week in the Eastern Conference.
